John Davenport
(All Saints Clifton)
Thursday 22 February 2018
1.15-1.55 pm
John Davenport was brought up in Hampshire. His initial enthusiasm for
music was fostered as a Chorister at Portsmouth Cathedral and as a ‘Quirister’
at Winchester College. He began the organ at ten, and after secondary
education at Lancing College, Sussex, gained the Henry Smart Organ
Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he gained the ARCO, FRCO
and LRAM (Organ Performance). He then became Organ Scholar at
Peterhouse, Cambridge, and later studied at York University.
He retired from full time teaching in 2005 after 35 years running Music
Departments in various schools around the country, including Director of
Music at Clifton College, Bristol and Director of Music at Bolton School,
Lancashire. He was also conductor of various choral societies and orchestras,
including the Bristol Concert Orchestra.
He now works as an examiner for the ABRSM in this country and abroad, and
is enjoying making music – as an organist, accompanist, cellist and conductor.
He is Director of Music at All Saints, Clifton, and is an accompanist/director of
‘Poscimur’ – a choir that regularly sings in Cathedrals around the country.
