The Offertory Prayer
O Lord, you have called us to be your disciples, dedicated to your service,
presenting ourselves as living sacrifices. We have been unwilling followers
who have failed to live up to your expectations. Forgive us, we pray, and
enable us to serve you faithfully all our days.
Forbid, Lord, that as we bring our gifts we should withhold
ourselves, for who we are is more basic than what we have.
Divine love through me blesses and multiplies all that I have, all
that I give, and all that I receive, in the name of Jesus. Amen
The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.
7
New names are added to the Wall of Honor every Veteran’s Day. If you, a loved one, or
a friend served in the armed forces and would like to be added to the Wall, please
complete the Wall of Honor form located in the Literature Rack and place it in the Wall of
Honor mailbox outside the Sanctuary. God bless you.
Dear Hope UMC Family,
Thank you for the many expressions of sympathy and support following the
recent passing of my mother, Joyce Gallant. Your calls, visits, cards, hugs, food
and flowers were great consolation during this difficult time for our family.
Special thanks to the Hope clergy and Comfort Givers Ministry for the lovely
resolution. We were comforted by your prayers, love and kindness.
Blessings,
Come learn about the man who has written two-thirds of
the New Testament. The Apostle Paul is an intriguing,
difficult and blessed figure to study.
His extensive writings have shaped much of Christian
thought and faith. We will spend several weeks learning
about this amazing gentleman as well as looking at his
complex personality and teachings.
See you there!
HOW MANY NEW CASES OF CANCER WERE EXPECTED TO BE DIAGNOSED AMONG AFRICAN
AMERICANS in 2013? According to American Cancer Society 176,620. (94,540 men) (82,080 women)
Cancer is the second leading cause of death for African Americans.
African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival rate of any other ethnic group in the
United States for most cancers.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF AND OTHERS?
Put a plan in place for a healthy lifestyle-talk with your Doctor, schedule mammograms, colorectal
screenings, Pap tests, HPV Vaccinations or PSA (prostate specific antigen) tests for men.
Pay attention to risk factors and have a strategy- Cancer can greatly be reduced by avoiding risk factors
but, not all cancers are preventable. Risk factors are anything that increases a person’s chance of
getting the disease like tobacco use, unhealthy diet and/or lack of exercise.
STOP TOBACCO USE!! The smoker is also endangering the lives of others through second and third
hand smoke. For help seek out the American Cancer or Lung Association.
START A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PRACTICE- Read up on nutrition, eat right and maintain your weight.
Being overweight can increase the risk of several types of cancers. Start your healthy lifestyle practice
today!!! It is a daily practice—make this a part of your daily schedule!!!
EAT FIVE OR MORE SERVINGS OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES EACH DAY. (Two or three cups of
vegetables, and 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit).
GO PESTICIDE FREE AND ORGANIC WHEN POSSIBLE. Go to www.foodnews.org for a Shoppers Guide
to Pesticides for 2013.
EAT WHOLE GRAINS whenever possible rather than processed (refined) grains and sugars.
START REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY-Get regular exercise (30 minutes of moderate physical activity
on 5 or more days each week). Research shows that it lowers the risk of breast and colon cancers.
