The district council is planning to review all schools in the first half of this year – with it expected to be completed by the end of June. But district councillor Craig Watson is concerned road safety issues outside West Rolleston Primary School cannot be stalled any longer. It comes as the district council approved last week to keep speed limits at 100km/h on several key arterial routes in Selwyn. These roads include Shands Rd (from Selwyn Rd to Boundary Rd), Springs Rd (from Hamptons Rd to Ellesmere Junction Rd), and Selwyn Rd (from Shands Rd to Lincoln Rolleston Rd). Lincoln Rolleston Rd (from Branthwaite Drive to Selwyn Rd) will also remain at 100km/h. The changes were made after a review of the speed limits began in August. The district council’s assets manager Murray Washington said the New Zealand Transport Agency supported the reduction to 80km/h on rural roads in general but arterial roads should remain 100km/h. At the district council’s December meeting it was decided the speed limit bylaw review would be partially re-opened to re-look at the arterial roads. It was also re-opened after Cr Watson raised concerns that submissions were lost because the district council’s email system Craig Watson Pat McEvedy was not set up sufficiently. He told Selwyn Times while those who submitted through the district council’s online process were fine, those who emailed in their submissions were lost. One of the submissions lost was from West Rolleston Primary School – which Cr Watson’s daughter attends. He said he was uncomfortable work to reduce safety issues outside the school will be furthered delayed as a result. “It is unfair to put them with a bunch of other schools where there is known safety issues. “While I understand that (the review) is going to happen later this year, I am really uncomfortable for the families . . . they didn’t get the opportunity to be heard and we aren’t mitigating the risk as fast as we should be,” Cr Watson said. West Rolleston Primary School is located on the corner of Burnham School Rd and Dunns Crossing Rd. While the speed limit on Dunns Crossing Rd is 50km/h, Burnham School Rd is 100km/ph leading up to the school. “It hits 50km/ph at the point of the school which isn’t good enough,” Cr Watson said. District councillor Pat McEvedy said reviewing the speed limit outside the school is a “no brainer” and it is important school children are safe. •HAVE YOUR SAY: What speed limits are you most concerned about outside schools?
