Making sense of old sayings 

and where they came from originally. 

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush 

This 16th century proverb is one of the oldest 

and best-known in English. It warns against 

taking unnecessary risks - it is better to keep 

what you have (a bird) than to risk getting 

more and ending with nothing (two birds out 

of your reach). 

As dead as a doornail 

This phrase dates back to at least the 14th 

century. Doornails are the large-headed studs 

that were sometimes used as decoration. The 

nails would be hammered through and then 

the protruding end would be bent over. This 

may be the source of the 'deadness', as such a 

nail would be unusable afterwards. 

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth 

Meaning, don't be ungrateful when you receive 

a gift. As horses get older they grow more 

teeth and their existing teeth begin to change 

shape and project further forward. 

The face that launched a thousand ships 

A reference to the mythological figure Helen of 

Troy (or some would say, to Aphrodite). Her 

abduction by Paris was said to be the reason 

for a fleet of a thousand ships to be launched 

into battle, initiating the Trojan Wars. 

A wide berth 

Originally a nautical term. Nowadays a ship's 

berth is the place where the ship is moored but 

before that it meant a place where there is sea 

room to moor a ship. A wide berth like many 

seafaring terms dates back to the heyday of 

sailing during the 17th century. 

Hair of the dog 

Referring to a small measure of drink, intended

to cure a hangover, this saying has been traced 

back to 18th century. It’s thought that it’s 

derived from the medieval belief that when 

someone was bitten by a 

rabid dog, a cure could be 

made by applying the 

same dog's hair to the 

infected wound. Whilst 

the actual hair of the dog 

remedy was to be very 

unsuccessful, a small 

measure of alcohol may 

be some temporary relief, 

as the body undergoes withdrawal symptoms 

from alcohol. 

On tenterhooks 

The saying is used if you are in a state of 

uncomfortable suspense. A tenter is a wooden 

frame, using hooks to hang woollen or linen

CENTRAL ESSEX BOWLING CLUB 

Central Essex Bowling Club 

meet at King George’s 

Playing Fields, Brentwood. 

In 2017, we celebrated our 

90th birthday with 

informal bowling (photo) 

followed by a barbecue. 

The bowling season 

extends from late April to 

early October. We run a 

rich and varied programme 

throughout the summer. 

The men’s section has 

entered teams to play in 

the Romford and District 

(evening) League and the 

Clockhouse Trophy (afternoon) League. 

This year, we are organising an internal 

mixed triples league and special events 

throughout the summer for ladies. We hold 

mixed drives for all players, enjoy friendly 

matches (photo) against local clubs and 

already have 2 away-days arranged at 

Whitstable and Thanet Bowls Clubs. 

Central Essex Bowling Club is not just a club 

for playing bowls. At the end of the season 

our monthly coffee mornings (soup and 

bacon rolls too) provide a great opportunity 

for catching up and there are whist, bridge 

and art group meetings each week. 

Our members are special and they look for 

different things from the club. They know 

that exercise and companionship are 

essential. We do our best to meet their 

requirements. Come and join us and be 

special too!!
