GETTING TO KNOW LAUREN AND JULIE

LAUREN

GORDON

MESCON

From:

Savannah,

Georgia, USA

Lives:

Amsterdam,

Netherlands

My life journey has been fabulous, really.

Grew up in Savannah, small town living,

became a lawyer, Guardian ad litem and

mediator, loved my practice and clients

(mostly), worked very hard as I was a single

mom for eight years and am now very happily

married with a total of four amazing adult

children, two daughters-in-law and a

grandbaby (omg - how did I do this without

aging?) on the way! Living in Europe has

allowed me to retire and see places I never

dreamed I would.

My sport is running. I honestly detested it; I did

it with my husband as a way to get my

exercise out of the way early in the morning;

until I moved here. With all of the new things

we have to absorb as expats in a totally new

place, running kept me grounded. I would

plug in my headphones, go outside and run,

simply putting one foot in front of the other. I

think it was the familiarity of it that felt so

good. Now I cannot go for very long without

going for a run.

Tell us about an event in your life that made a

big difference and why it did. I survived a

major illness 28 years ago. I dislike calling

myself a “breast cancer survivor” as that is the

last thing I want to define me. However, as I

approach 28 years of beating that horrible

disease, I would like to think I might have

been able to inspire others to have faith and

a positive

outlook should

they ever

have to face

something

similar in their

own lives.

JULIE LEHR

From: Cincinnati,

OH, then Red

Bank, NJ, USA

Lives:

Amsterdam,

Netherlands

I’ve had a lot of ups and

downs on my journey,

but the ups far outweigh

the downs! I have found

the downs always lead

to

something

unexpected, such as…. I

was a widow with three

children when I met my

husband. Before meeting

him, I wasn’t sure life would ever be the same.

What he brought to our family can’t be put

into words. Today I have one daughter (and

son-in-law) and three sons and have taught

kindergarten, coached swimming (my passion)

over 20 years and now enjoy my expat life!

I was a swimmer from the time I was 10 years
