GETTING TO KNOW GWEN
Tell us about an event in
your life that made a big
difference and why it did.
Spending the night alone
in the desert when I got
lost in the Marathon des
Sables and coping with
the idea that I actually
might die if I wasn’t found.
I realised that I had a
choice: panic and go to
pieces or stay calm and
try and find a solution. This
taught me that however
bad things seem, just
hang on in there and don’t panic. Never
give up.
What personal motto do you live by and how
does it affect what you do/don’t do? “Trust in
life.” Most of the time “the sea of life” sends
us what we need. Call it the law of
serendipity, God, whatever. When the time is
right, we receive what we need.
If you could meet one famous or influential
woman, alive or dead, who would it be and
why? What would you talk about with her?
Zaynab, queen of Aghmat (the Moroccan
Almoravid dynasty capital), who lived in the
11 th century. Very little is known about her
and I would like to know her life story. I would
talk to her about how she exercised power
through her husbands.
Tell us something interesting about yourself
that not many people know. I was nearly
sent to a special school as a child because I
was not learning to read. As a last resort, the
doctor told my parents to stop reading to me
at night. This they did and within a couple of
weeks I was reading. It turned out that I was
just lazy!
