Family, friendly sports is offered through Hi-Five Sports Camp
Dating back to 1990, Hi-Five
Sports Camp is a huge part of
Chicago tradition.
Hi-Five Sports Camp is a
family-founded business that
looked at public sport and volunteer
programs and thought ... this
could be a lot better!
We’ve been innovating recreational
youth sports to work
with younger ages in various
team sports. We’ve been working
to make it fun while filling
the needs of parents, schools and
communities. The culmination
of all of our hard work is what
we call the Hi-Five Ecosystem, a
menu of sports classes, leagues,
camps and events for children of
all ages for every season.
We look at youth sports as
something for the whole family.
We call this youth sports entertainment
and just like any good
entertainment it needs to be full
of fun. We have a great balance
of fun and fundamentals. We
take sports seriously but we always
say “you need a good sense
of humor” too.
The biggest celebration is our
eight-week Hi-Five Summer
Sports Camp that takes place at
Christian Heritage Academy in
Northfield. Our Sports camp is
famous for a variety of reasons
including our Hi-Five Olympic
week, NBA week, Sandlot
Week, NFL Week, two Hi-Five
Camp videos made by the campers,
Hi-Five Idol, Hi-Five World
Cup, Hi-Five Stanley Cup Finals,
and so much more!
The best part is that everyday
is a perfect mix of everyone’s
favorites sports, outdoors, with
music blasting.
There is no place better than
Hi-Five Sports Camp to see
our philosophy in action. Our
formula doesn’t just work in
Chicagoland but everywhere.
We’re in multiple states in over a
dozen cities and growing. Don’t
take it from us, ask our satisfied
families throughout the United
States.
What is ‘Social Fit’ and why is it so important at camp?
When campers arrive for their first
day of camp, the first piece of information
they usually receive is the name of
the cabin group to which they have been
assigned. But how are these cabin groupings
arranged?
At many summer camps, they are organized
by arranging campers into groups
based on age and gender. This method of
grouping, where birthdays represent the
key piece of information, is very similar
to class organization procedures at
schools. If one of the main goals in sending
a child to camp is to make friends,
then organizing cabins in this way does
not make sense.
There are so many variables that contribute
to friendship-making, and age
tends to be fairly low on the list. Much
more important are factors such as interests,
abilities, social skills and introversion
versus extroversion. Some 13-yearolds
are very active, competitive, and
athletic, while others are more shy, cautious,
or cerebral. If we want to maximize
a camper’s chances of making genuine
friendships at camp, we need to give him
a lot of opportunities to spend time with
like-minded peers, which means putting
them in the same cabin.
At Camp Kodiak, we call this “social
fit.” We build our cabins according to
which campers we think would get along,
have common interests, have similar
needs, and are closely related in age.
We know that youngsters with learning
disabilities, ADHD and ASD, have higher
incidences of experiencing social difficulties
than their typically-developing peers.
Anecdotally, we hear stories from parents
about difficulties their children have had
in the past. Many of them have been bullied
or excluded, made to feel peripheral
or unwelcome in existing cliques. Since
our campers are at greater risk of isolation
and friendlessness, trying an overnight
camp (or another camp after a previous
negative experience) feels scary, so it is
paramount that we set them up for social
success.
Not all of our campers have social skills
difficulties; some are children or adolescents
just navigating the regular social
ups and downs that come with growing
up. These campers, too, benefit from social
fit because they need peers who challenge
them and are good candidates for
true, reciprocal friendships.
Creating cabin groupings that offer our
campers the best social fit provides all
of our campers with many opportunities
each day to practise and refine their social
skills. With the guidance and assistance
of Camp Kodiak’s trained, professional
staff, our campers (and their parents) notice
significant growth in their level of
confidence in social environments and
their ability to relate to others.
How do we determine the best social fit
and groupings for cabins? Find out more
at www.campkodiak.com. We will also be
hosting an open house event in Chicago
on Saturday, March 3. For more information,
Another beloved day camp in Northbrook
is ‘Z’ Frank Apachi, a place North
Shore children have claimed as their
summer home for decades. The private,
10-acre campus with wide open green
spaces includes a brand-new playground,
two large heated pools, tennis courts, athletic
fields, a climbing wall and art studio.
Spending the summer at Apachi encourages
children to grow as friends, strengthen
Jewish identity and gain confidence in
themselves.
This year, the fun keeps going with our
newest J Camp, BIG IDEA, in Northbrook
(and we could not be more excited!).
BIG IDEA offers 13 technology
workshops to choose from — including
everything from coding and robotics to
animation and app development — and
empowers campers to uncover new interests
and follow their passions. Each day
blends time spent on computers with “unplugged”
activities, including swimming,
sports, art and games.
JCC Chicago J Camps have become
a right of passage for so many children.
Our expert and caring staff continues to
bring our time-tested summer experiences
constantly reimagining and innovating all
Heart of WeHaKee Camp for Girls is relationships
Founded by the Dominicans
of Sinsinawa, WeHaKee Camp
order of Sisters in the nation.
Located in Winter, Wisconsin,
WeHaKee Camp for Girls is noted
by many as the premier summer
camp in the Midwest.
Noggin Builders day camp keeps children engaged with S.T.E.M.
Summer is a great time
to explore!
Fun, hands-on activities
in S.T.E.M. (science, technology,
engineering and
math) will keep your budding
scientist or engineer
engaged over the summer.
Noggin Builders campers
explore through
hands-on, real-world
projects. We believe in
asking questions, rather
than stating answers, and
in involving children in
creating the path our explorations
will take. At
Noggin Builders, your
child will build more
than a science project;
they build the life-long
skills of problem solving,
creative and critical
thinking, perseverance,
communication and collaboration.
Creative problem solving
skills help today’s
children to become tomorrow’s
future leaders.
Our world is quickly
changing in ways we
can’t even imagine, and
Camp Kawaga is one of America’s
premier summer camps for boys ages 7-16.
Kawaga offers a balanced well-rounded program of more than 100
activities, including sports of all types. But even more so than our
innovative programs and our beautiful grounds is something else. It’s
what sets us apart. It’s the spirit and the culture. The friendships and
the lessons that last a lifetime. Kawaga offers a balanced
the most important skill
our children need to be
successful in the future is
the ability to use creative
and critical thinking to
solve problems. STEM
activities are a natural
and fun way to build
these skills.
Noggin Builders Summer
Camp offers flexible
schedule options to meet
the needs of your summer.
Because each week’s
theme and activities are
different, you can sign up
for the weeks that fit your
child’s schedule. Early
and late options are also
available.
Campers in grades K-3
enjoy each camp day
beginning at 9:00 a.m.
and concluding at noon.
Each day is filled with
fun, hands-on activities
in STEM. Your child will
experiment, build, and create
through explorations
based on the theme of the
week. Fun team building
activities, cooking and
crafts are also part of each
week. Boom, Pop, Splat!,
It’s Electric, Go Green Science
and Time Machine
are some of our themes for
2018.
Campers in grades 4-7
will build creative problem-solving
skills through
open-ended design projects
and experiments during
their full-day camp,
9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Each
week includes a field
trip incorporated into the
STEM theme and fun team
building activities, as well.
Crazy About Coding, Cool
Chemistry, Gadget Design,
and Sensational Circuits
are some of the themes for
this year.
Pre-K campers have
fun with science, crafts
and games specifically
designed for 3-5 year
olds. Getting messy with
elephant toothpaste,
powering vehicles with
magnets or exploring
light and rainbows are
just some of the exciting
hands-on projects for this
summer.
Making memories at La Relance Salon
It is time again to make the
decision about which summer
camp our children will attend.
As parents we have hopeful
notions for our children of
the things we fondly remember
from our summer holidays. Regardless
of the final choices our
children will have many happy
memories to reminisce about
with their friends through the
years to come.
Making memories is something
that Amanda, the owner
and master stylist and colorist
of La Relance Salon in Glencoe,
has taken personally.
“I have been working in the
photography industry over the
last four years,” she said. “It has
brought me full circle within the
beauty industry. It only made
sense that not only cutting, coloring,
and styling my customers
hair but actually completing my
vision along with makeup, clothing
styling and finally a portrait.
“I am giddy every time I see
the vision come together while
I process the last edits on the
photos. I prefer an artistic portrait
session over standard studio
family portraits or simple work
place head shots, but I understand
the need for a beautiful image
to use for personal and business
needs.”
Amanda uses her photos in all
of the salon and studio marketing
pieces and collaborates in local
events with the best photographers
and models in the Chicago
area. Her creative portrait ses-
for Girls.
If you have a daughter, granddaughter,
niece or any other special girl in your life,
they will have more fun than they can imagine.
They will create incredible friendships
with girls from around the United States
and the world and discover gifts within
them that they never knew were there.
WeHaKee Camp for Girls is a place
where girls can grow and have fun while
building confidence, character and lifelong
relationships. With nearly 40 camp
activities led by our safe, skilled, competent
and caring staff, campers will extend
themselves in ways they might not have
otherwise had the chance.
Girls attending WeHaKee can customize
their camp experience and meet girls
who like the same stuff as they do! They
get to design their own camp program by
selecting the activities they love and the
ones they want to try! Our caring counselors
and helpful campers will support them
as they try new things and explore who
they truly are.
Whether they’re horseback riding, water
skiing, dancing or roasting marshmallows
at WeHaKee Camp for Girls it’s all
about building great relationships. But beware,
summer camp is habit forming and
they’ll want to return year after year!
Our amazing camp staff will help each
girl realize her uniqueness as an individual
person, while helping her reach
her full potential. Living in a community
with girls from diverse religions, cultures,
races, and economic backgrounds, allows
each girl to grow and develop in an atmosphere
of acceptance and encouragement.
The experience of a lifetime is waiting
La Relance Salon’s tips
to help organize camper
moms:
• Forget ironing or sewing
on labels. Use a Sharpie
laundry marking pen
or stickers that affix to
the label of any item of
clothing.
• Have extra new socks
and underpants. When
you’re purchasing the
required pairs of socks
and underpants, buy
an extra dozen of each.
Have these in your
child’s drawer for when
they return from camp.
Whatever makes it home
after the summer will be
ready for the trash bin.
• Use large plastic bags
to contain clothing. Put
socks in one, bathing
suits in another, T-shirts
in another. This will
make unpacking easier
for your child.
• Keep camp specific items
separate when storing
at home. Camp towels,
clothing with the camp
logo, “bunk junk” (small
games, flashlights, canteens)
should not be integrated
into the linen
closet, utility area, or
playroom. When packing
next year, you’ll
have it all in one place.
• Sneakers don’t come
home from camp. Tell
your child not to bring
home any sneakers or
shoes except for the
ones on his/her feet.
They will be so dirty
that you’ll want to toss
them when they get
home anyway.
• Schedule a lice check.
When your child gets off
the camp bus, take your
child for a lice check before
they enter the house.
Head lice cannot hop or
fly. They are spread by
direct contact with the
hair of an infested person.
Head-to-head contact
with someone who
already has head lice is
the biggest risk. Personal
hygiene or cleanliness
in the home or school
has nothing to do with
getting head lice.
