THE NORTHBROOK TOWER
Students, residents
continue debate on D225
transgender policy
During the public comment
segment of District
225’s Board of Education
meeting on Monday, Feb.
12, Glenbrook North junior
Erin Rosenfeld was
one of five Glenview and
Northbrook citizens who
expressed their opinions
on District 225 policy regarding
transgender students,
which was adopted
at the board’s Jan. 22
meeting.
The policy allows transgender
students to use the
locker room that conform
to their gender identity.
“As a student, I greatly
support this policy,” said
Rosenfeld, who identified
herself as gay. “[Transgender
students] are not
trying to take advantage of
anyone else (in the locker
room), and there’s nothing
in the Bible against people
who are gay.”
Debby Shulman, a Glenbrook
South graduate with
three kids that attended the
high school and a member
of Parents and Friends of
Lesbian and Gay students,
also praised the policy.
Two citizens spoke
against the policy.
A woman — who told
reporters, “I don’t want
my name in the paper,”
when asked to identify
herself — told the board
she was from “a family of
faith” and “I don’t think
it’s right my child can gaze
at people like this; we’re
supposed to protect their
eyes, not open their eyes to
people like this.”
