Bad news, folks.
I tuned in to the weather while driving
to work this morning and learned
that the extended models are looking like
lots of snow and continued
cold temperatures
for the month of
March.
While I wasn’t surprised
to hear that,
I was a bit disappointed.
I love it when
March brings warmth
and melting and an
early Spring.
Since we may have
to embrace at least
four more weeks of
winter, here are some

ideas to get you out of hibernation.
• Bundle up and head off to Horseshoe
Bend for tubing or Great Bear for some
snowboarding. If you haven’t ever tried
snowboarding, I might suggest you stick to
the tubes. There’s not far to fall when you
spill out of a tube.
• Find a concert or performance. The
Civic Music Association in Worthington,
MN, will be featuring Windsync on Saturday,
Feb. 24. That’s an easy place to start if
you aren’t a regular concert-goer.
• Get to one of the last high school basketball
games of the season. As teams are
being eliminated heading toward the state
tournaments, the caliber of play just gets
better and better. With the talented athletes
in northwest Iowa, some of these games
are better than what you’ll see down in Des
Moines.
• Try a restaurant you haven’t been to. If
you pick a particularly cold and blustery
night you might not have to wait for a table
as everyone else will have stayed snuggled
up at home.
• Gather everything you need for your
taxes. OK, so that one probably won’t be
much fun, but at least you’ll have it done
when nice weather finally arrives.

Olde Towne Dinner Theatre
presents “Nana’s Naughty Knickers”
Spending the summer with grandma.
Sounds like it should be a
pretty sedate summer.
One should think.
But the main character in Olde
Towne Dinner Theatre’s new show is
in for a surprise.
In “Nana’s Naughty Knickers” by
Katy DiSavino, Bridget soon learns
that living with her grandmother in
New York for the summer will be anything
but a calm experience.
But the show is a fun experience
for the audience. Olde Towne Dinner
Theatre in Worthing, SD, has the
show slated to run from now through
March 18.
The show tells the the story of
Bridget, who plans to move in with
her grandmother, Sylvia, the summer
before she starts law school. But
Bridget’s grandmother is up to something
a little risque. She has an illegal
lingerie business that she is running
out of her apartment and she needs
Bridget’s help to keep her from going
to jail or getting evicted.
Cue the laughs.
It is a play that the organizers of the
season knew they had to do.
“Our play reading committee got
together like we normally do and
someone suggested this script and
as we passed it around it was unanimous.
We all wanted to do this show,”
said John J. Boe, the artistic director
at Olde Towne Dinner Theatre. “It’s
funny. It’s charming and, in a weird
way, it’s also really sweet. In the end,
the granddaughter ends up going
along with the scheme because she
loves her grandmother.”
This show is one that is new to the
area. And that is on purpose, according
to Boe.
“It’s one thing we try to do every
season — bring a great show that
people haven’t heard of before into
more light. There’s a ton of shows
out there that are really good that just
don’t have the name recognition, but
when the audience sees them they fall
in love,” Boe said.
The nine actors, including the stage
manager who has a small role, began
rehearsals the second week of January.
They rehearsed five nights a week
before opening the show on Feb. 16.
The actors range in experience from
veterans of the Olde Towne Dinner
Theatre stage to a few who have never
been in a show at the theatre before.
There are performances in the evenings,
which include dinner and then
matinees, which include dessert.
It’s a show that will certainly delight
audiences, according to Boe, and will
have people laughing out loud.
“I think the funniest moment of the
show involved an old lady stuffing a
younger lady’s bra with tennis balls,”
Boe said. “But my favorite moment is
really very sweet. Sylvia is talking to
Bridget trying to convince her to help
and she does a monologue about how
she’s not getting any younger and not
going to be around much longer and
she needs Bridget’s help to do this.
That’s what changes Bridget’s mind.”
“It’s a madcap show, but there are
these sweet moments. When you can
mix genres in there even for a moment
that’s always nice,” Boe said. F

landmarks to show how the glacier
affected and formed the area,”

Silver Lake Fen, Freda Huffier Kettlehole,
Ocheyedan Mound State
Preserve, and Cayler Prairie.
“It’ll be a fun program and good
way to spend time outdoors,” Hansen
said.

The great outdoors is there for
everyone to enjoy during every
season. And yes, that includes
winter.
One of the goals of the next Hike
the Wild program is to show everyone
that winter is just as good a time as
any to get outside and enjoy nature.
This time around hikers will visit
Elinor Bedell State Park, and weather
permitting, don pairs of snowshoes
for an informative stroll around the
park on eastern shore of East Lake
Okoboji.
“Just because it’s cold and snowy
doesn’t mean we can’t get outside,”
said naturalist Ashley Hansen. “We’re
crossing our fingers that there is
good snow, but even if it’s slushy and
melted we’ll still go and just wear our
boots for hiking instead.”
The hike is from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Tuesday,
Feb. 27, and
those who
attend will
meet at the
Dickinson
County Nature Center before heading
to the state park.
Once out there, they’ll strap on the
snowshoes, or boots, depending on
the weather, and check out all there is
to see and hear.
“I went snowshoeing our there last
weekend to map out a route and may
go back again to focus on plant and
tree identification,” Hansen said.
“We’ll talk about the trees and plants
you find out there. I know some of
the plants have berries you can eat so
maybe we’ll talk about edible plants.”
In addition to the flora, like burr
oaks and raspberries, Hansen will
discuss the fauna in the park with her
fellow hikers.
“We’ll talk about some of the birds.
A kingfisher actually lives out there, so
maybe we’ll hear or see him,” Hansen
said.
Relatively new to the area, Hansen
looks forwarded to helping lead the
Hike the Wild series this year.
“I’m excited to see some places
I haven’t been before and to meet
people with similar interests,” Hansen
said. “This program attracts people that
want to be outside and I’m excited to
teach them about the natural history of
the area. It will be a lot of fun.”

“I’m hoping that snowshoeing
is something different that will get
people interested in getting outside.
Even if it’s a little cold it will still be
fun to do. It’s fun and good exercise
too,” Hansen said.

Family fun
Clay County Fair & Events Center to host Family Fest on March 3
During the winter sometimes it
is hard to come up with fun
activities that the whole family
will enjoy.
The Clay County Fair & Events Center
and Positively Spencer Youth are
offering up a whole day full of fun for
the whole family.
On Saturday, March 3, from 9 a.m.-
2 p.m., they’ll be hosting the 8th annual
Family Fest at the Clay County
Regional Events Center in Spencer.
It’s a free event chock-full of activities
for kids of all ages.
“Families can enjoy activities for all
ages and learn what local businesses,
groups and organizations can do for
families. This year will include two
special performances at 11 a.m. and 1
p.m. by The Dollipops, an engaging,
high-energy, highly interactive kids’
show,” said Andrea Wiesenmeyer, the
marketing and partnership director
with the Clay County Fair.
“Family Fest is becoming a tradition
for many local families,” said Fair &
Events Center CEO Jeremy Parsons.
“The addition of The Dollipops will
make this great family experience
even more enjoyable.”
Another fun thing that people can
check out is Safety City.
This allows families to interact with
local law enforcement, firefighters
and EMT staff.
People can also check out Spencer
Hospital’s “glow germ” hand washing
activity, the H.E.A.T tactical vehicle
and the Spencer Municipal Utilities’
“touch a truck” station.
The ISU Extension and Outreach
Clay County will be returning to Family
Fest again this year with activities
around 4-H Find-Out Day.
Some of those activities include
bunny hopping and dog obedience
courses.
Iowa Lakes Community College
will be on hand to offer up some
STEM activities to demonstrate that
learning about Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math can be fun.
There will also be KidZone, sponsored
by the Spencer Family YMCA,
which will feature a number of activities
including the Gaga Pit.
All of these activities provide ample
opportunities for kids and families to
enjoy some time together.
“Family Fest was created to provide
families a free outing where they
can enjoy activities for all ages while
learning about what local businesses,
groups and organizations can do for
families,” said Wiesenmeyer.
“One of the goals at the Fair &
Events Center is to improve the quality
of life in northwest Iowa by providing
top notch events for all ages. This
event specifically focuses on kids and
young families, providing a fun, free
and educational event.” F
