‘Put Tambdi Surla on
Goa Tourism circuit’:
Pauskar
Margao: Sanvordem MLA Deepak
Pauskar has put forth a proposal
before the Goa Tourism Development
Corporation (GTDC) to develop
Dudhsagar waterfalls and Tambdi
Surla temple as part of the state’s
tourism circuit.
Pauskar told TOI that while
several facilities for tourists could be
developed at the Dudhsagar waterfalls,
at Tambdi Surla, the temple and its
surroundings could be developed into
an eco-tourism spot.
“There are several water bodies in
Tambdi Surla known for its medicinal
properties. I have placed a proposal
before GTDC for construction of a
ropeway which can attract a large
number of tourists,” Pauskar said.
Stating that the Centre’s rural
development funds could be utilized for
the purpose, Goa State Infrastructure
chairman further said that he has
also asked Rajya Sabha MP Vinay
Tendulkar to take steps in that regard.
As regards the road leading to the
Dudhsagar waterfalls, Pauskar said
that interlocking pavers will soon
be laid along the 5km stretch from
Kulem to Dudhsagar. A proposal in
that regard has already been moved
to the forest department and the chief
minister, he said.
“Approval from the wildlife board
has also been sought, and the work is
likely to start within the next two to
three months,” Pauskar told TOI.
Udupi’s Cage Fish Farming
model to be used in Goa
Panaji: The state’s department of
fisheries is looking to adopt Udupi’s
successful model of house-to-house cage
fish farming.
Initially, about a hundred 4mx4m
sized cages will be set up. Locals will be
able to install these cages in their yards
and begin fish culture.
While the practice of raising selected
fish in enclosures in the open sea has
been going on for the last few years at
Polem and reservoir culture is on at
Chapoli dam, the new model will look at
involving people other than fish farmers
to raise fish for self-consumption and
even sale, if there is excess production.
“With this, there will be less
dependency on the market and people
can go for local species. Technical and
financial assistance will be provided
by the department,” said fisheries
secretary Govind Jaiswal. The National
Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)
has agreed to provide help in this
regard, he said.
“Local species of fresh water fish will
be more feasible for this experiment.
Seeds and feed for the same will
procured from NFDB and Central
Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
Every block in Goa will be provided
with the opportunity,” he said.
India, Canada pact to open a
$19-trillion market for startups
MUMBAI: In a bid to boost crossborder
India has signed a bilateral agreement
Singapore to
pay bonus to all
citizens after
surplus budget
All Singapore citizens aged 21 and above
will get a one-off “SG Bonus” of up to
S$300 each as the 2017 budget came in
with a surplus of almost S$10 billion
(US $7.6 billion), the city-state’s finance
minister announced on Monday.
Finance minister Heng Swee Keat
made the announcement during
his budget speech in Parliament,
describing the bonus as a “hongbao”,
the Mandarin word for a monetary gift
given on special occasions.
He said this “reflects the government’s
long-standing commitment to share of
the fruits of Singapore’s development
with Singaporeans”, according to
Channel News Asia.
The “SG Bonus” will cost the govt.
S$700 million (US $533 million).
The bonus will be paid according to
people’s assessable income. About 2.7
million people will get the payouts,
which are due by the end of 2018.
them grow over the next two years
with Zone Startups India identifying
about 40 startups that can be eligible
for this programme. The bilateral
Donald Trump Jr. praises
‘spirit’ of India’s people
during promotional trip
NEW DELHI — Poverty-stricken
people in India could teach some of the
world's richest a lesson, Donald Trump
Jr. said during a visit to the country to
help sell luxury apartments featuring
his family’s name.
“I don't want to be glib but you can
see the poorest of the poor and there is
still a smile on a face," the president's
eldest son said in an interview with
CNBC TV18. "It is a different spirit
than that which you see in other
parts of the world and I think there is
something unique about that."
Trump Jr. added, “I know some of the
most successful businessmen in the
world, and some of them are the most
miserable people in the world.”
As part of his trip, Trump Jr. is due
to meet with Indians who have already
bought units in Trump-branded
developments.
A barrage of glossy full-page
advertisements in Indian newspapers
promised that buyers who order
apartments in that development by
Thursday will get "a conversation and
dinner" with Trump Jr. one day later.
"Trump has arrived. Have you?" read
the front-page ads in almost every
major Indian newspaper.
The apartments are expensive —
though not outrageously so in the
overheated real estate world of India's
wealthy elite. An apartment in the
Trump Towers complex in the New
Delhi suburb of Gurgaon runs $775,000
to $1.5 million.
On Friday, Trump Jr. is scheduled
to make a speech about Indo-Pacific
relations at a New Delhi business
summit. Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi is scheduled to speak at
the same event later in the day.
The Trump Organization has
licensing agreements with all its
Indian business partners, who build
the properties and acquire the Trump
name in exchange for a fee. The
organization has five projects in India,
Relics of St
Anthony of Padua
to be brought to
Goa in March
for 3 days
PANAJI: The holy relics of St Anthony
of Padua will be brought to Goa at the
beginning of next month for a three
day pilgrimage.
The two original sacred relics— a
fragment of St Anthony’s petrified
flesh in a beautiful bust and his
smallest rib in a casket—brought
from Rome, will be kept at Monte de
Guirim and Navelim for veneration.
While the first relic—the petrified
flesh in a bust— will be kept for public
veneration, the rib in the casket will
be used to bless the faithful.
Devotees can venerate the relics on
March 2 (morning to evening), and
March 3 (morning to afternoon) at
Goa will become a unique state as it
will have two international airports
conducting civilian operations in close
proximity once the greenfield airport at
Mopa in North Goa gets commissioned,
state Governor Mridula Sinha said in
Panaji on Monday. The coastal state
currently has international airport at
Dabolim in South Goa near Vasco town,
which operates from the naval base INS
Hansa. The airport operates civilian
as well as defence aircraft. “The
present airport at Dabolim is already
overloaded due to increasing passenger
traffic as well as naval restrictions,”
the governor said addressing the first
day of the Budget session of the state
Legislative Assembly.
“While the dual status of Dabolim
airport is retained, my government is
committed to have its own international
airport at Mopa in Pernem taluka,
catering to round-the-clock operations of
both domestic and international flights
within the next three years,” she said.
“Goa will become a unique state
to have two international airports
conducting civilian operations in
close proximity,” Sinha said. The
The governor said that Goa is one of
the famous tourist destinations and
tourism industry contributes a major
portion in the state income. “The
number of tourists arriving in Goa is
more than four times the population of
the state,” she said.
Sinha added that the government’s
priority was to provide quality
infrastructure and promote tourism
in all spheres of the state. “The Union
Ministry for Tourism has sanctioned
nearly Rs 200 crore under Swadesh
Darshan, a scheme for upgrading
basic amenities and tourist-friendly
infrastructure along the coastal circuit
of the state,” she told the House.
Indian
tourists head
to Sri Lanka,
Seychelles
over Maldives
Indian tourists are increasingly picking
Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius and
the Seychelles over the Maldives to
spend their vacations in the coming
months, as they avoid the archipelago
nation following the recent political
developments there.
Despite the Maldivian government's
assurance that the country was safe
to visit and that the tourist hotspots
and airports were not affected by the
developments in the capital, fewer
people are preferring to visit the
country, travel and tour operators said.
That has led to a 20-40% increase in
bookings to the other beach destinations
in the past two weeks, they said.
"Travellers are looking at newer
options for short-haul destinations in
light of the unrest in the Maldives and
the recent travel advisory issued,” said
Ankit Rastogi, travel portal Cleartrip’s
vice president for hotels.
Malaysia and Phuket have registered
a more than 20% increase in booking
rates, and the developments in the
Maldives could have contributed to
this, Rastogi said. "Destinations like
Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu are also
showing about 7-10% increase in share
on the chart of top destinations when
compared with the few weeks before the
news of unrest came out."
Karan Anand, head of relationships
at travel company Cox & Kings,
said places such as the Seychelles
and Mauritius could gain from the
developments in the Maldives.

Zuari bay a marine
goldmine, finds new study
PANAJI: Zuari bay is turning out to be the
state’s fish biodiversity hotspot with a study
by Indian Council of Agricultural Research
(ICAR), Old Goa, yielding a 320-strong list of
aquatic species, comprising 255 finfish and
65 shellfish species.
ICAR’s project on ‘Coastal fish
biodiversity and artificial fish habitats’
from October 2013 to September 2017
proved to be an exciting exercise for
the fisheries scientists. They managed
to catalogue 95 pelagic species that live
near the ocean surface and 160 demersal
species that prefer a seabed habitat. The 65
shellfish species, included 40 crustacean
species and 25 molluscan species.
“Zuari estuary is the most diverse
coastal ecosystem in the state in terms
of fish count and density. Its high
productivity is mainly due to fresh water
Priya gets more
followers on
Instagram than
owner Zuckerberg
Malayalam actress Priya Prakash
Varrier has garnered more followers
on Instagram than Facebook Cofounder
Mark Zuckerberg, whose
company also owns the photo-sharing
app. While Priya crossed 4.5 million
mixing with saline water and presence of
mangrove fringes,” says fisheries scientist
G B Sreekanth.
With its broad yawning mouth and
continuous influence of sea water, the
Zuari estuary is 14km long and 6.5km wide
and an average depth of two to 16 metre.
Sand and gravel largely form the
river bed layer, but rocky patches
along the coast at Siridao, Cacra, Odxel,
Bambolim, Nauxim and other villages
offer a protected and sheltered habitat for
breeding of marine and brackish water
fishes. “During August to September,
many species are in abundance here, says
local fisherman Sanjay Pereira.
Fears of pollution are high due to
riverside industrial activity, especially
shipyards, rusting barges and effluents
from households. Studies by scientists
followers, Zuckerberg currently has 4
million followers on the platform. The
actress became popular after her song
'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' from the
upcoming film 'Oru Adaar Love' went
viral.
have found metallic content in some
shellfish species. “Many fish species
are found in lesser quantities, such as
windowpane oysters, bamboo sharks and
others,” Pereira said.
The rocky outcrops keep the destructive
trawlers at bay. “Only smaller gillnet
and traditional fishery can be carried
out in the estuary, which is sustainable
for fish breeding and conservation,”
says Sreekanth. Diving underwater with
cameras and also checking the catch landed
at various points helped the scientists
estimate the fish biodiversity in the
Zuari estuarine ecosystem. An average
of 1,000-tonne catch – one-fourth of Goa’s
brackish water catch - is hauled up annually
at these medium-sized landing centres.
“All the fish we get in the sea needs a
different habitat for their breeding and
colonization. Zuari bay is very important
location as the large number of species
are getting constant inflow of food,” says
director of ICAR, Old Goa, E B Chakurkar
ICAR has submitted the report to
the Goa government and fisheries
department. While the study on Zuari,
which is a lifeline for fishermen, has
further boosted research into the marine
resource-rich area by National Institute of
Oceanography (NIO) scientists, the data is
considered vital for conservation.
“The loss of precious fishery resources
and their habitats due to pollution,
coastal development and illegal fishing
necessitates their replenishment through
strategic conservation measures,” says
Sreekanth.
Samsung unveils world’s
largest SSD with 30 TB storage
Samsung has unveiled the world’s
largest solid state drive — an
unassuming-looking bit of kit that boasts
a whopping 30.72 terabytes of storage.
It’s the most storage ever crammed into
the 2.5-inch form factor, and is designed
for enterprise customers looking to move
away from the mechanical parts of your
standard disk-based hard drive.
The PM1643 is built from 32 sticks of
1TB NAND flash packages, each of which
contains 16 layers of 512Gb V-NAND
chips. That’s enough space to hold 5,700
HD movies or roughly 500 days of nonstop
video, and offers twice the capacity
Jeff Bezos is building a 500ft
clock inside a mountain which
goes ‘cuckoo’ every 1,000 years
The 10,000 Year Clock (Picture: Long Now Foundation)
If you’re the world’s richest man, there
must be a temptation to splash out on the
odd little treat – like a 500ft clock inside a
mountain which goes cuckoo every 1,000
years. Jeff Bezos has just announced
that he’s spending £42 million on ‘The
10,000 Year Clock’ – meant to tick for
10,000 years inside a mountain in Texas.
The idea is that it’ll remind us all of the
long-term consequences of our actions,
with a cuckoo that pops out every
of the former largest SSD — a 16 terabyte
drive also released by Samsung back in
March 2016. The new Serial Attached
SCSI (SAS) drive offers impressive
sequential read and write speeds of up to
2,100MB/s and 1,700 MB/s.
When exactly the PM1643 will go on
sale and for how much isn’t known.
1,000 years. It’ll tick once a year, with
different chambers which open up on
different anniversaries.
Bezos told Wired in 2011, ‘In the year
4000, you’ll go see this clock and you’ll
wonder, “Why on Earth did they build
this?” It all seems a bit wishful thinking,
given that it seems almost-certain we’ll
be wiped out by nuclear fire in the next
few months, but it’s a nice idea.
The clock is all-mechanical, and also
rings out ttunes on its chimes – every
time it rings, it plays a different song.
The makers say, ‘ Ten thousand years
is about the age of civilization, so a
10K-year Clock would measure out a
future of civilization equal to its past.
That assumes we are in the middle of
whatever journey we are on – an implicit
statement of optimism.
‘If a Clock can keep going for ten
millennia, shouldn’t we make sure our
civilization does as well?
‘If the Clock keeps going after we are
personally long dead, why not attempt
other projects that require future
generations to finish?’ [metro.co.uk]

been programming for MOG for 2.5 years
and previously had my own media agency
(Gotcha Impact Media).
Are you excited about the coming
can’t contain my excitement.
What do you expect from it?
- I just hope that many people will come
and experience this unique kind of
Sidharth Malhotra
starrer 'Aiyaary'
banned in Pakistan
Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee
starrer 'Aiyaary' has failed to get a
clearance for release in Pakistan. The
film has been banned reportedly due
to its premise which is set against the
backdrop of Indian Army. Notably,
this is the third film directed by Neeraj
Pandey to be banned in Pakistan, after
'Baby' and 'Naam Shabana'.
Nawazuddin was only
MP Sanjay Raut
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has said
actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was the only
choice for 'Thackeray', the upcoming
biopic on Shiv Sena founder Bal
Thackeray. "I think people all across
the world will appreciate the movie," he
added. Directed by Abhijit Panse, the
film will be shot in Hindi and Marathi
and it will also be dubbed in English.
Want to be called a good actor,
not just wink queen: Priya
Thiruvananthapuram: Her cute wink
and coquettish smile may have made
Priya Prakash Varrier the national
crush but the debutante, who is
enjoying her newfound fame, hopes to
have a lasting acting career rather than
being a fleeting Internet sensation.
The 18-year-old college student,
whose appearance in the teaser song
Mani Manikya Malaraya Poovi from
film "Oru Adaar Love" (A Superb Love
Story) catapulted her to national fame,
also has Bollywood dreams and counts
Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and
Shah Rukh Khan among her favourites.
"I would like to be known as a good
actor rather than being known as the
wink queen. This is a new feeling. But I
am happy. The song has received good
response," Varrier, whose Instagram
following has now reached 3.3m and the
numbers are growing, said.
"Our director told us that the 30-second
shot should be a memorable one and
we followed his vision. I never expected
that it would become such a big hit. It is
a school-centric film. We are discussing
love, crushes and friendship. Love in
the time of schooling is the theme of the
film," she said.
In the viral number, the actor and her
co-star Roshan Abdul Rahoof are seen
doing a see-saw with their eyebrows
before Varrier surprises him with a
wink and a flirtatious smile.
Varrier credits Roshan for creating
the moment by tweaking his eyebrows
first. The actor, whose father is a
Central Excise officer and mother
a home-maker, says acting was her
dream and would like to balance it with
her studies.
Salman Khan’s
Being Human
Foundation faces
blacklisting by BMC
Salman Khan’s much feted NGO Being
Human Foundation is facing the
possibility of being blacklisted by BMC.
The civic body has issued a show-cause
notice against the organisation for
failing to set up concessional dialysis
units in Bandra after over a year of being
allotted the project.
According to a report by Mumbai
Mirror, BMC has also forfeited the
NGO’s deposit and has already floated
fresh tenders to find a replacement.
This is part of BMC’s PPP (public
private partnership) project of setting up
12 dialysis centres housing 199 dialysis
machines in the city that would be able
to perform around 10,000 procedures
every month. BMC provides space for
the facility while the assigned NGO takes
care of the maintenance and the staff.
Salman’s Being Human Foundation was
supposed to set up 24 dialysis machines
at Bandra’s Allied Cooperative Society
in Pali Hill. They also offered to provide
dialysis services at Rs 339.50.
Loretta Lewis, a representative of the
NGO, has however said that the NGO
hasn’t signed any formal contract/ MoU
with the civic body.
Ranbir Kapoor
roams on
Mumbai
streets, no one
recognises him
Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor
roams around in the streets without being
mobbed. Can you believe that? Well,
that is exactly what happened when the
actor visited Bhendi Bazaar in Mumbai
during a recce for his upcoming film
Brahmastra, which also stars Alia Bhatt.
The upcoming fantasy adventure trilogy
titled Brahmastra (this is first film of the
series) will be directed by Ayan Mukerji.
It also stars Amitabh Bachchan.
Actor Hussain Dalaal shared a number
of pictures of Brahmastra team -- of
him with his director Ayan Mukerji.
The last of the series was that one that
had Ranbir and him. Dalaal wrote
on Instagram, “Saved the best for the
end.. Ranbir and I sneaking around on
After Sultan row, Salman Khan
reportedly removes Arijit Singh's
song from Welcome to New York
After Khan removed Singh's version of
the song 'Jag Ghoomeya' from his 2016
blockbuster Sultan, it is now reported
that he got yet another song of Singh's
removed from the upcoming film
Welcome to New York, which features
a cameo song 'Nain Phisal Gaye'
starring the Dabangg superstar along
with Sonakshi Sinha.
In fact, like in Sultan, Khan
reportedly got Singh's voice replaced
by that of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
I'll be a star
when people
watch film
because of
me: Taapsee
She has received appreciations from
critics and audiences alike for films
like Pink, Naam Shabana and Judwaa
2, but actor Taapsee Pannu, who has
been described as the “most powerful
woman of the year” by a magazine,
says she is yet to touch stardom and
still feels like a struggler.
Considering her achievements, does
she feel she has gained stardom? “Not
at all. I don’t even feel like a star. I
still feel like a struggler because I
need to really work hard and make
sure that my Friday works for me. I
still don’t feel I am the one who will
However, singer-turned Union
Minister Babul Supriyo has demanded
to remove Fateh Ali Khan's voice from
the album, citing the singer's Pakistani
nationality as a point of concern.
Welcome to New York is a multi
starrer with a cast including Diljit
Dosanjh, Karan Johar, Boman Irani and
Ritesh Deshmukh, along with Sinha.
The whole dispute between Khan
and the 'Tum Hi Ho' singer came into
picture when the latter posted an open
letter on Facebook apologising to the
superstar asking Khan to retain his
version of 'Jag Ghoomeya' in Sultan.
However, after the news spread like a
wildfire, the singer removed the post.
At that time, when Khan was asked
to give his opinion on the development,
he had said, "In every film, there are a
lot of singers who sing and director and
producer who make the choice of who
is going to be the best voice for the film.
One voice was mine but that was also
rejected, so why get so upset and so
hurt. This is life," reports News18.
get the audience into theatres as yet.
I don’t see that I have that pull, I am
trying to make that,” said Taapsee.
The actor says she does not want to
get pigeonholed in a particular genre.
“I don’t want them (the audience)
to stereotype me because then the
impact of these hard-hitting films will
die down after a time because they
would know what they would expect
out of me. So, the fun is to mix and
match because then you don’t know
what you are coming up with next,”
she added.
"I'm not even sensitive to people's
Andhra farmer puts up Sunny
Leone poster to keep crops safe
According to a report by Hindustan
Times, A Chenchu Reddy, 45, of Banda
Kindi Palle village put up posters of
a bikini-clad Sunny Leone to divert
people's attention from his fields of
cauliflower and cabbage. The purpose
of the posters is to ward off the 'evil
eyes' off the crops.
"This year, I have a good crop on
10 acres. This has been attracting
unnecessary attention of villagers and
passersby. To ward off their evil eye,
I thought of this idea of putting up the
big flax poster of Sunny Leone a couple
of days ago," Mr Reddy told Hindustan
Times. "The trick has worked. Nobody
is looking at my crop now," he added.
According to The News Minute, the
posters not only show actor Sunny
but also read: 'Orey Nannu Choosi
Yedavaku Raa' which means 'Don't Cry
At Me' and 'Atu Yekkada Choosthunav,
Nannu Choodu' which means 'Where
Are You Looking At? Look At Me'.
How to host a
Pool Party!
by Faye
These days, with work and hectic lifestyles we’ve all been hitting
some big life milestones lately. So, we’ve come to realize that
when an opportunity arises for us to get together and have
good old-fashioned quality time, we don’t hesitate to take it. In
summer, pool parties are the best, we’re talking your quintessential
summertime kinda pool party with pool floats, snacks, sunshine and
friends. Weekends are the best time to host a summer pool party.
Here are some tips on how you can host your own poolside party…
1. Get your guest list down.
First things first: When you’re
throwing any kind of party, it all
starts with the guest list. Whether
it’s an intimate gathering with your
closest friends or a blow out bash,
narrow down your list of friends or
family members who are going to
attend. Also, don’t be afraid to get
out of your comfort zone, bringing
different groups of friends together
is a great way to meet and mingle.
2. Have fun with your décor.
Special décor can really add a
personalized touch to your pool
party. It doesn’t have to be anything
crazy, but it’s nice for your gang
to feel like they are escaping
somewhere fun for the day. Keep
your pool floats and pool toys ready,
and made sure there are areas where
your friends could relax in the shade
when they wanted a break from the
sunshine. Speaking of sunshine,
make sure you have SPF handy, put
together a little “sunscreen station”
so that guests can easily lather up
and avoid a sunburn. Also having
fresh flowers in strategic areas
around the pool or on the snack table
will breathe life into your party
décor as well.
3. Serve the right snacks.
Healthy and light snacks taste
delicious and are the best to serve
to your friends like, dips, skewers,
almonds, salad, fruits, tacos are just
a few of the things you could serve,
it all depends what kind of a party
you want to host and what kind of
food your guests are into. You could
serve different types of good and
turn it into a bit of a taste test with
everyone comparing flavors! You
can also serve chips and guacamole,
slices of watermelon, cherries,
grapes and strawberries.
4. Set up a drink station.
Once your snacks are set, you will
want to serve a refreshing beverage
so that guests have something
hydrating to sip on, especially
when it’s so hot outside. Use drink
dispensers to make fruit-infused
waters like strawberry-cucumbermint,
orange-lemon, and cherrymint.
Just add paper straws and
you’ll be ready to sip! Always make
sure that your guests are only
drinking out of plastic cups to avoid
any glass catastrophes near the pool.
5. Get your playlist perfected.
An awesome playlist can make the
difference between a great party and
an awesome party. Make sure you
have your tunes ready to go and a
preferably wireless speaker to play
them.
6. Have fun!
With tasty snacks, refreshing drinks,
fun music and good friends, your
pool party will be a hit. Especially
with funky pool floats involved…
