‘Put Tambdi Surla on
Goa Tourism circuit’:
Pauskar
Margao: Sanvordem MLA Deepak
Pauskar has put forth a proposal
before the Goa Tourism Development
Corporation (GTDC) to develop
Dudhsagar waterfalls and Tambdi
Surla temple as part of the state’s
tourism circuit.
Pauskar told TOI that while
several facilities for tourists could be
developed at the Dudhsagar waterfalls,
at Tambdi Surla, the temple and its
surroundings could be developed into
an eco-tourism spot.
“There are several water bodies in
Tambdi Surla known for its medicinal
properties. I have placed a proposal
before GTDC for construction of a
ropeway which can attract a large
number of tourists,” Pauskar said.
Stating that the Centre’s rural
development funds could be utilized for

As regards the road leading to the
Dudhsagar waterfalls, Pauskar said
that interlocking pavers will soon
be laid along the 5km stretch from
Kulem to Dudhsagar. A proposal in
that regard has already been moved
to the forest department and the chief
minister, he said.
“Approval from the wildlife board
has also been sought, and the work is
likely to start within the next two to
three months,” Pauskar told TOI.
Udupi’s Cage Fish Farming
model to be used in Goa
Panaji: The state’s department of
fisheries is looking to adopt Udupi’s
successful model of house-to-house cage
fish farming.
Initially, about a hundred 4mx4m
sized cages will be set up. Locals will be
able to install these cages in their yards
and begin fish culture.
While the practice of raising selected
fish in enclosures in the open sea has
been going on for the last few years at
Polem and reservoir culture is on at
Chapoli dam, the new model will look at
involving people other than fish farmers
to raise fish for self-consumption and
even sale, if there is excess production.
“With this, there will be less
dependency on the market and people
can go for local species. Technical and
financial assistance will be provided
by the department,” said fisheries
secretary Govind Jaiswal. The National
Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)
has agreed to provide help in this
regard, he said.
“Local species of fresh water fish will
be more feasible for this experiment.
Seeds and feed for the same will
procured from NFDB and Central
Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
Every block in Goa will be provided
with the opportunity,” he said.

India, Canada pact to open a
$19-trillion market for startups
MUMBAI: In a bid to boost crossborder
exchange of technology talent,
India has signed a bilateral agreement
with Canada to facilitate market access
for startups from both countries.
The programme, which will carry a
special focus on women entrepreneurs,
has been sanctioned by both the
governments and will be rolled out

All Singapore citizens aged 21 and above
will get a one-off “SG Bonus” of up to
S$300 each as the 2017 budget came in
with a surplus of almost S$10 billion
(US $7.6 billion), the city-state’s finance
minister announced on Monday.
Finance minister Heng Swee Keat
made the announcement during
his budget speech in Parliament,
describing the bonus as a “hongbao”,
the Mandarin word for a monetary gift
given on special occasions.
He said this “reflects the government’s
long-standing commitment to share of
the fruits of Singapore’s development
with Singaporeans”, according to
Channel News Asia.
The “SG Bonus” will cost the govt.
S$700 million (US $533 million).
The bonus will be paid according to
people’s assessable income. About 2.7
million people will get the payouts,
which are due by the end of 2018.

people in India could teach some of the
world's richest a lesson, Donald Trump
Jr. said during a visit to the country to
help sell luxury apartments featuring
his family’s name.
“I don't want to be glib but you can
see the poorest of the poor and there is
still a smile on a face," the president's
eldest son said in an interview with
CNBC TV18. "It is a different spirit
than that which you see in other
parts of the world and I think there is
something unique about that."
Trump Jr. added, “I know some of the
most successful businessmen in the
world, and some of them are the most
miserable people in the world.”
As part of his trip, Trump Jr. is due
to meet with Indians who have already

In what could benefit over 10 crore

families, the Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley on Thursday unveiled a new
National Health Protection Scheme
under which a health coverage of
upto Rs 5 lakh per family will offered
for secondary and tertiary care
hospitalization. "This will be the
world's largest government funded
health care programme," Prime
Minister Narendra Modi said in his
televised address soon after Finance
Minister's Budget speech.
The government will also establish
1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres
centres under the Ayushman Bharat
program. "We are all aware that lakhs
of families in our country have to
borrow or sell assets to receive indoor
treatment in hospitals. Government
is seriously concerned about such
impoverishment of poor and vulnerable
families," Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley said.

is a major step for making healthcare
accessible to the downtrodden and

Relics of St
Anthony of Padua
to be brought to
Goa in March
for 3 days
PANAJI: The holy relics of St Anthony
of Padua will be brought to Goa at the
beginning of next month for a three
day pilgrimage.
The two original sacred relics— a
fragment of St Anthony’s petrified
flesh in a beautiful bust and his
smallest rib in a casket—brought
from Rome, will be kept at Monte de
Guirim and Navelim for veneration.
While the first relic—the petrified
flesh in a bust— will be kept for public
veneration, the rib in the casket will
be used to bless the faithful.
Devotees can venerate the relics on
March 2 (morning to evening), and
March 3 (morning to afternoon) at
Alverno Friary, Monte de Guirim, and
on March 3 (afternoon to evening) and
on March 4 (morning to afternoon) at
Padre Pio Friary, Moddi, Navelim.
Goa will become a unique state as it
will have two international airports
conducting civilian operations in close
proximity once the greenfield airport at
Mopa in North Goa gets commissioned,
state Governor Mridula Sinha said in
Panaji on Monday. The coastal state
currently has international airport at
Dabolim in South Goa near Vasco town,
which operates from the naval base INS
Hansa. The airport operates civilian
as well as defence aircraft. “The
present airport at Dabolim is already
overloaded due to increasing passenger
traffic as well as naval restrictions,”
the governor said addressing the first
day of the Budget session of the state
Legislative Assembly.
“While the dual status of Dabolim
airport is retained, my government is
committed to have its own international
airport at Mopa in Pernem taluka,
catering to round-the-clock operations of
both domestic and international flights
within the next three years,” she said.
“Goa will become a unique state

Indian tourists are increasingly picking
Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius and
the Seychelles over the Maldives to
spend their vacations in the coming
months, as they avoid the archipelago
nation following the recent political
developments there.
Despite the Maldivian government's
assurance that the country was safe
to visit and that the tourist hotspots
and airports were not affected by the
developments in the capital, fewer
people are preferring to visit the
country, travel and tour operators said.
That has led to a 20-40% increase in
bookings to the other beach destinations
in the past two weeks, they said.
"Travellers are looking at newer
options for short-haul destinations in
light of the unrest in the Maldives and
the recent travel advisory issued,” said
Ankit Rastogi, travel portal Cleartrip’s
vice president for hotels.
Malaysia and Phuket have registered
a more than 20% increase in booking
rates, and the developments in the
Maldives could have contributed to
this, Rastogi said. "Destinations like
Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu are also
showing about 7-10% increase in share
on the chart of top destinations when
compared with the few weeks before the
news of unrest came out."
Karan Anand, head of relationships
at travel company Cox & Kings,
said places such as the Seychelles
and Mauritius could gain from the
developments in the Maldives.

Zuari bay a marine
goldmine, finds new study
PANAJI: Zuari bay is turning out to be the
state’s fish biodiversity hotspot with a study
by Indian Council of Agricultural Research
(ICAR), Old Goa, yielding a 320-strong list of
aquatic species, comprising 255 finfish and
65 shellfish species.
ICAR’s project on ‘Coastal fish
biodiversity and artificial fish habitats’
from October 2013 to September 2017
proved to be an exciting exercise for
the fisheries scientists. They managed
to catalogue 95 pelagic species that live
near the ocean surface and 160 demersal
species that prefer a seabed habitat. The 65
shellfish species, included 40 crustacean
species and 25 molluscan species.
“Zuari estuary is the most diverse
coastal ecosystem in the state in terms
of fish count and density. Its high
productivity is mainly due to fresh water

colonization. Zuari bay is very important
location as the large number of species
are getting constant inflow of food,” says
director of ICAR, Old Goa, E B Chakurkar
ICAR has submitted the report to
the Goa government and fisheries
department. While the study on Zuari,
which is a lifeline for fishermen, has
further boosted research into the marine
resource-rich area by National Institute of
Oceanography (NIO) scientists, the data is
considered vital for conservation.
“The loss of precious fishery resources
and their habitats due to pollution,
coastal development and illegal fishing
necessitates their replenishment through
strategic conservation measures,” says
Sreekanth.

GoanTimes: How did you get the idea
of this festival?
Norin: Having lived in Goa for the past

3 years, I have been trying to make an
impact in Waste Management plus I have
been associated with the Museum of
Goa - MOG from its inception. Inspired
by the enormous array of artists from all
walks of life and cultures in Goa plus the
Carpet of Joy artwork made out of 150,000
discarded water bottles I wanted to use
those two elements for painting magic
on everybody’s canvas of life, be it the
Goans, the settlers or the tourists.
Who is working on it? Just you or you
have a team?
- We have a super small core team of only
3 people, but are getting an overwhelming
support from so many individuals,
institutes and businesses.
Did you do any events like this before?
- I have never created a festival. Always
said I would do one day though. But
of course I have a lot of experience in
programming and marketing as I have
been programming for MOG for 2.5 years
and previously had my own media agency
(Gotcha Impact Media).
Are you excited about the coming
festival?
- Absolutely. It’s something I have been
building and working on for the past few
months and now that it is happening, I
can’t contain my excitement.
What do you expect from it?
- I just hope that many people will come
and experience this unique kind of
festival!

Foundation faces
blacklisting by BMC
Salman Khan’s much feted NGO Being
Human Foundation is facing the
possibility of being blacklisted by BMC.
The civic body has issued a show-cause
notice against the organisation for
failing to set up concessional dialysis
units in Bandra after over a year of being
allotted the project.
According to a report by Mumbai
Mirror, BMC has also forfeited the
NGO’s deposit and has already floated
fresh tenders to find a replacement.
This is part of BMC’s PPP (public
private partnership) project of setting up
12 dialysis centres housing 199 dialysis
machines in the city that would be able
to perform around 10,000 procedures
every month. BMC provides space for
the facility while the assigned NGO takes
care of the maintenance and the staff.
Salman’s Being Human Foundation was
supposed to set up 24 dialysis machines
at Bandra’s Allied Cooperative Society
in Pali Hill. They also offered to provide
dialysis services at Rs 339.50.
Loretta Lewis, a representative of the
NGO, has however said that the NGO
hasn’t signed any formal contract/ MoU
with the civic body.

After Khan removed Singh's version of
the song 'Jag Ghoomeya' from his 2016
blockbuster Sultan, it is now reported
that he got yet another song of Singh's

Andhra farmer puts up Sunny
Leone poster to keep crops safe
According to a report by Hindustan
Times, A Chenchu Reddy, 45, of Banda
Kindi Palle village put up posters of
a bikini-clad Sunny Leone to divert
people's attention from his fields of
cauliflower and cabbage. The purpose
of the posters is to ward off the 'evil
eyes' off the crops.
"This year, I have a good crop on
10 acres. This has been attracting
unnecessary attention of villagers and
passersby. To ward off their evil eye,
I thought of this idea of putting up the
big flax poster of Sunny Leone a couple
of days ago," Mr Reddy told Hindustan
Times. "The trick has worked. Nobody
is looking at my crop now," he added.

Jaipur’s Gandhi Nagar railway station
on Monday. In a unique initiative, the
North Western railways (NWR) has
deployed a female employee on every
single post in the station, making it the
first such station in the country.
Starting Monday, all 32 posts at the
station – from station superintendent
to head ticket collector, point woman to
railway protection force constable and

attend. Also, don’t be afraid to get
out of your comfort zone, bringing
