Latin in quarterfinal

Latin in a Friday,
Feb. 23, state tournament
quarterfinal game at the
Northbrook Ice Arena, the
Glenbrook girls wasted no
time in sending the message
that they are committed
to defending their Illinois
High School Hockey
Championship.
They took 15 shots on
goal in the first period
when they surged to a
three-goal lead and they
went on to score a decisive
5-0 victory, outshooting
their opponents 31-11
in the process.
Five different players
got the goals — Alicia
Kim, Lily Cataldo and
Madeline Dunham in
the first period and Hannah
Jensen and Madison
Itagaki in the second
— and goalie Lauren
Abraham got the shutout.
Assists were credited to
Itagaki, Kim, Kat Poulos
and Dunham.
“We were really hyped
because of the playoffs,”
said Dunham, who is one
of six incumbent Red
team All-State selections
on the roster. “Our team
is as good as last year’s. I
think we definitely can do
it again.”
Defenseman Katie
Thomas pointed out that
there were many factors
contributing to Glenbrook’s
dominance.
“Multiple people were
getting goals,” Thomas
said. “We were moving
the puck well. We were
back (to defend) when we

needed to be. Our goalie
played great and froze the
puck so they didn’t get
the rebounds. When there
were rebounds we got
them out of the way.”
“We had high expectations
going into this game
but I don’t think any of
us thought it would be so
one-sided,” said defenseman
Shannon Schmitt.
What made this stellar
performance so impressive
was that coach Steve
Hamelin was minus six
players because of assorted
injuries.
“When we play our
game we feel there’s nothing
our girls can’t accomplish,”
said assistant
coach Alex Botvinnik.
“We have a lot of multidimensional
players, good
hockey players who do
one role one shift and a
completely different role
another shift.
“Tonight we had shots
from everywhere. We had
rushes. We had consistent
pressure in their zone.
We didn’t let them build
any pressure. Our goalie
didn’t face a lot of shots
but nothing fazed her and
she made some saves that
were outstanding. When
they were in our zone we
were able to take the puck
away. Our four defensemen
(Dunham, Itagaki,
Thomas and Schmitt) did
a great job.”
The Glenbrook girls
— a team made up of
players from Glenbrook
South, Glenbrook North
and Regina — will be trying
to replicate the game
they played against Latin
when they meet Fenwick
in the state tournament
semifinals at The Edge in
Bensenville on March 5.
The winner of that
contest will advance to
the State title game on
March 24 in the United
Center.
