NAB arrests Ahad Cheema’s
close aide Shahid Shafiq
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB)
Interrogation continues for Ashiana Housing Scheme
Scandal, meanwhile arrested close aide of Ahad Cheema
Shahid Shafiq today. According to the Sources, NAB
arrested Shahid Shafiq on the tips given by the Ahad
Cheema in Account of Ashiana Housing Scheme case.
NAB team receives mobile, lap top record
The investigation team of National Accountability
Bureau (NAB) has extended its sphere of investigation
after collecting the mobile and lab top data of Ahad
Cheema, senior bureaucrat alleged of corruption charges
in Ashiana Housing Scheme (AHS).
Sources said that data which investigation team of
NAB has collected include the record of conversation of
Ahad Cheema with top personalities of Punjab government
and record about other development projects
including AHS.
Why Ahad Cheema’s arrest ruffled so many feathers?
In the bureaucratic circles, there was astonishment,
even disbelief. Punjab govt’s favourite officer, who
was posted on grade-20 jobs, despite holding a grade
18 position of the PakistanAdministrative Service, was
surely untouchable. But he was not.
Formerly, Cheema had served as the DCO
Lahore and the DG LDA. So happy was the Punjab
govt with his performance that he was made the
head of a power company, Quaid-e-Azam Thermal
Power Co, which allowed him to take home Rs1.5
million, perks excluded.
Ahad Cheema
Tales of Cheema’s misconduct were well-known in
the govt circles. Well, to everyone but the Punjab govt. Rumors have been swirling for a
while. Yet, no one bothered to investigate it. Until the NAB got a whiff. The anti-graft
watchdog detected illegalities and corruption worth billions in a land deal between Paragon
Housing Society and the Punjab Land Development Company to construct the Ashiana
Iqbal housing project, a low-cost housing project of the Punjab government. Cheema was
then heading the LDA. The deal happened under his watch, with his approval.
According to a NAB representative Cheema allegedly received 32 kanals of land as
bribe from the owners of Paragon Housing Society. As DG LDA, Cheema awarded contracts
worth billions to the same company. It has also been said that he illegally distributed
expensive tracts of land among those who were his favourites.
So how did the Punjab government react to this? In anger. Immediately, as the news
broke, the chief secretary Punjab called a meeting in the Darbar Hall of the Punjab Civil
Secretariat to decide the future course of action. A second meeting was called at the Civil
Officer’s mess. Then a third was held at the Secretariat where it was decided that Cheema
will be provided legal help and his house will be looked after in his absence.
A quickly assembled legal team filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against the
arrest. The concerned bench also immediately asked the DG NAB for an explanation.
What, one wonders, is the precedent being set here, especially by a chief minister who
boasts of not tolerating corruption?
chief said, “Bureaucrats
Land is encroached by, and calls for punishment
against, some of the biggest land lords in
Pakistan. Others are small frys, many directly or
indirectly under their cover. Until these corrupt and
criminals are punished, the small and big land owners
will have a free hand to grab more land. This keeps people
and their entire families enslaved, along with bonded
labor for more inhuman as well as dehumanizing
activities. These criminal activities have not stopped.
But these activities can be stopped. It simply needs true
Pakistanis to end any and all evils and reinstate goodness
in and for fellow human beings.
Issues of land and corruption are intricately linked.
Over the recent times, increasing demand for land has
made the sector more vulnerable to corrupt abuse by
those in a position to own or control land.
The stakes have been raised over land not only in
relation to large-scale land acquisitions, but also for who
gets to register their title and secure their rural or urban
land in the first place.
The social and environmental fall-out has been significant,
with millions of people turfed off land that they have
traditionally lived on or farmed, and forests and eco-systems
flattened through the industrialisation of land use.
Tackling land grabbing effectively requires addressing
the corruption that pervades the allocation and governance
of land. The trouble is that too often experts working on
land grabbing and corruption do so in siloes. The framing
and terminology used by these two groups differ greatly,
and both pursue different national and international
processes. That gap stands in need to be bridged.
Corruption enables land grabbing in a number of ways.
It can be simply transactional – when government officials
accept bribes from a company to gain access to land, or to
look the other way if they’re behaving badly. When it gets
trickier is when corruption is endemic, and institutionalised
within government.
This can mean policies and central state functions are
skewed so that leaders can enrich themselves at the
expense of the public good.
In situations like that government decisions about land
use aren’t based on recognition of rights, on sustainable
development or long-term economic growth – land is
handed to whoever has the best connections or is willing
to pay the highest price. Perversely, this then feeds further
corruption. Judges often require bribes to make the “right”
decision when victims try using the courts to get their land
back. While land, once grabbed, provides revenues to
business and political elites, which consolidates their
power even further.
Land is different from other natural resources because
it’s more than just a factor of production - it’s self-identity.
It’s where ancestors are buried, it’s a place of spiritual
worship and most of all, it’s home. So when people lose
their land because of corruption, the socio-economic
Of course the Russians had some impact. If communicating
via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
were a useless way to influence voters, campaigns
wouldn't bother with social media strategies
United States President Trump is right about one thing:
They must be "laughing their asses off" in Moscow.
At him.
Faced with compelling evidence that Russian cybersaboteurs
worked to sway the 2016 election, influencing
swing-state voters with lies on social media and even staging
real-life campaign rallies, Trump's only response has
been a frantic and pathetic attempt to protect his own delicate
ego. "But wasn't I a great candidate?" he pleaded on
Sunday on Twitter.
Protecting our democracy obviously concerns Trump
not at all. But you're probably not surprised.
In a stunning indictment announced on Friday, Special
Counsel Robert Mueller laid out in painstaking detail how
a group of paid internet trolls based in St. Petersburg,
Russia, worked diligently to "sow discord in the US political
system". They began with the aim of creating general
mischief, but "by early to mid-2016, Defendants' operations
included supporting the presidential campaign of
then-candidate Donald J. Trump ('Trump Campaign') and
disparaging Hillary Clinton."
There it is, in black and white: Trump was elected with
the active help of Russian President Vladimir Putin. While
Putin is not named as a co-conspirator, the man behind the
scheme - an oligarch named Yevgeniy Prigozhin - is a
longtime crony known in Russia as "Putin's chef." The
idea that he would meddle in a US election without orders
from Putin is ludicrous.
The 13 named defendants are presumably in Russia,
beyond the reach of US justice. Mueller's account of what
they allegedly did is simply infuriating. Voters who saw
the Russians' Facebook, Instagram and Twitter posts were
led to believe they were being lobbied by their fellow citizens
- not by an adversarial foreign power.
They tried to convince Muslim voters that Clinton was
anti-Islam and convince anti-Muslim voters that she
favoured imposing sharia law. They tried to suppress the
African-American vote with an Instagram account named
"Woke Blacks" that called Clinton "the lesser of two devils"
and argued "we'd surely be better off without voting
EDITORIAL
Land And Corruption
Needs Just Actions
impacts are only the start.
The impunity granted to political and business elites as
a result of grand corruption can so infect society that it can
be hard to know where to start.
Corruption is a system - we can get disheartened trying
to destroy the whole thing, but even the smallest, everyday
step to try to disrupt, reduce or block it is a worthwhile
starting point. Also helpful are solutions presented in global
events that gather together governments, civil societies,
enforcement agencies, journalists and related experts to
discuss ways of tackling land grabbing and corruption.
Supreme Court and other concerned departments had
given the provincial executioners of Sindh time deadlines
to vacate land illegally occupied by government agencies
and their other affiliated mafias. In one case, about 59,800
acres of government land had been occupied, adding that
the encroachers included several government agencies
including Housing as well as Development authorities.
Out of the total 59,803 acres of the land that was
encroached, 52,130 acres of land were under institutional
encroachment.About 2,864 acres of the land was retrieved
sometime back.
The courts had ordered the Sindh government to vacate
all the encroached state land within a few months time.
Another issue was more grave: Forest land measuring
1,446.46 acres was vacated on the orders of the Supreme
Court but was re- encroached by the influential persons.
Effective legislation and its implementation to abolish
illegal land mafia occupying minorities’ properties and
trust land was also part of the problem. Serious concerns
exist on the ineffective police investigation reports submitted
before courts of law with regard to illegal land possession
and the failure of administration to end illegal
occupation of lands, especially of the weak segments in
society. Because of ineffective laws the courts are giving
stay orders for indefinite periods in these cases, which is
causing delay in the provision of justice. Government's
stance is to ensure that with the cooperation of the civil
society, the officials are amending the existing laws especially
the Illegal PossessionAct, 2005. Insecure urban land
rights were open to fraud. This stresses for the importance
of not only campaigning for better laws, but also better law
enforcement in land governance with accountability.
Laws, orders, recommendations and bylaws for reforms to
overcome the issue of delayed justice with regard to the
continuing and unending illegal possession cases is an
urgent call to be honored and fulfilled on every scale and
level, from lowest to the highest officials and authorities.
Punishing the small criminals will solve only part of a
very big problem and therefore big criminal land lords
who illegally occupy land in this country can be brought
to book. Some or the other official or department, leader
or ministry have got to be patriotic enough to end illegal
land and real estate occupation and to administer the land
justly for progress and prosperity countrywide soonest.
OPINION
Why Trump is more worried about Putin
AT ALL." They purchased online ads calling Clinton "a
Satan," falsely accusing her of voter fraud and claiming
that "Donald Trump is the one and only [candidate] who
can defend the police from terrorists."
They organised and promoted actual pro-Trump and
anti-Clinton rallies in Florida, North Carolina and
Pennsylvania, according to the indictment, and they targeted
their social media campaigns at other swing states.
To pay for all of this, they established fraudulent US identities
and bank accounts so that no one would know they
were heeding political advice from Russians employed by
"Putin's chef."
Mueller's big splash sent Trump into a full-fledged
Twitter conniption that by Monday showed no sign of easing.
It would be a waste of space to quote all of Trump's
bleating, but basically he tried to claim that the indictment
proves two things: Whatever the Russians did or didn't do,
they had no impact on the outcome of the election; and
there was no collusion - or as Trump would put it, NO
COLLUSION - between the Russians and the Trump
campaign.
Deep down, he must know the indictment says nothing
of the sort. Of course the Russians had some impact. If
communicating via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter were
a useless way to influence voters, campaigns wouldn't
bother with social media strategies. If rallies didn't produce
votes, campaigns would find better uses for the money and
effort it takes to stage them.
It is true that it's impossible to say how much impact
this element of the Russian meddling offensive had.
Would it have made a difference if more African-
Americans had voted in the Rust Belt states that Trump
unexpectedly won? Or if fewer progressives had voted for
the Green Party's Jill Stein, whose candidacy the Russians
worked hard to boost? Perhaps some clever political science
professor will figure it all out someday.
As for collusion, it's true that Mueller does not allege
that anyone from the Trump campaign knowingly participated
in the Prigozhin conspiracy. But the Russians did
much more: Intelligence officials say they hacked into the
email accounts of the Democratic National Committee and
Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, and then leaked
that material to do maximum damage to Clinton's prospects.
We don't know if there was collusion in that scheme - or in
other schemes we might not yet know about.
5
US to open Jerusalem embassy in
May for Israel’s 70th anniversary
Movies in competition
at Berlin film festival
WASHINGTON: The
United States said Friday it
will relocate its embassy in
Israel to Jerusalem in May,
bringing forward the contested
move to coincide with the
Jewish state’s 70th birthday
and enraging Palestinians,
who called it a “blatant
provocation.”
Palestinians object to
recognition of the disputed
city as Israel’s capital and
say the embassy move could
destroy a two-state solution
to the decades-old Middle
East conflict. Palestinians
also object to the date chosen
for the embassy move —
they call May 14, on which
Israel declared independence
in 1948, Naqba, their “day of
catastrophe.”
Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed
the announcement
and thanked US President
Donald Trump for his “leadership”
and his “friendship.”
The embassy move is
expected to complicate
efforts to restart peace talks
between the Israelis and
Palestinians — and jeopardize
the traditional, if disputed,
US role as an “honest
broker” in efforts to resolve
Italian fashion brand donates $500,000
to US student gun reform march
NEW YORK: Italian
luxury fashion brand
Gucci on Friday followed
a slew of US celebrities in
announcing a donation of
$500,000 to next month’s
student march on
Washington demanding
tougher gun controls.
The donation, first
reported by Women’s Wear
Daily and confirmed by a
Gucci spokeswoman in the
United States, gives another
huge boost to what is
considered an unprecedented
youth mobilization
against gun violence following
last week’s shooting
in Florida.
“We stand with March
For Our Lives and the fearless
students across the
country who demand that
their lives and safety
become a priority,” the
label said in a statement.
“We have all been
directly or indirectly
impacted by these senseless
tragedies.”
The rally is scheduled
to take place on March 24,
with sister rallies planned
across the country to
demand that US Congress
come up with effective
legislation to address the
epidemic of gun violence
in the United States.
The Washington Post
says organizers expect up
to 500,000 people to
attend, according to their
event permit application.
The rally is being
organized by students from
the Florida high school
where a 19-year-old armed
with a semi-automatic rifle
killed 17 people in
China to overtake US as biggest
nuclear energy nation: IEA reports
This file photo shows a nuclear site near Beijing, China.
BEIJING: The
International Energy
Agency (IEA) says China
will surpass the United
States to become the
world’s largest nuclear
power producer over the
next two decades as Beijing
is set to more than triple its
nuclear energy capacity.
In a report published on
Saturday, IEA Executive
Director Fatih Birol said
China would exceed US in
nuclear power production
in the next 20 years following
recent initiatives taken
by Beijing to expedite the
adoption of alternative fuel
source.
“China is coming back
strong. Today there are
about 60 nuclear power
plants under construction
and more than one-third of
them are in China. China is
growing and as a result of
that we will soon see China
overtaking the United
States as the number 1
nuclear power in the
world,” the report quoted
Birol as saying.
The IEA executive
director said the US had
been the global leader in
nuclear power since the
1960s, but said two trends
could knock the country
out of the top spot.
The first is that very few
additions to the US nuclear
capacity have been made in
recent years, and the second
is that there are no lifetime
extensions for the
existing power plants,
according to Birol.
Tiger Shroff-Disha
Patani ‘Baaghi 2’
Trailer
MUMBAI: The muchawaited
trailer of Tiger
Shroff-Disha Patani starrer
‘ Baaghi 2 ‘ is finally
out! One look at the trailer
and you would agree that
Tiger gives out the
‘Rambo’ vibes.
The trailer sees the
return of Ronnie played
by Jr. Shroff as he sets out
as a ‘one-man army’ to
find a small girl called
Riya.
The film boasts of a
powerful ensemble cast as
Randeep Hooda takes on
the role of the antagonist.
Disha plays Neha,
Ronnie’s love interest in
the film, whom he was to
be married to. Manoj
Bajpayee essays the character
of a tough cop in the
film. We also see Prateik
Babbar making a brief yet
impactful appearance.
Packed with explosions,
fling kicks, punches
and high octane stunts, the
trailer has Tiger rebelling
for love while on a serious
mission.
Until now, the US
embassy has been located in
TelAviv with a separate consulate
general located in
Jerusalem that represents US
interests in the Palestinian
territories.
The new embassy will be
initially located in a US consular
building in Jerusalem’s
Arnona neighborhood while
Washington searches for a
permanent location, “the
planning and construction of
which will be a longer-term
undertaking,” Nauert said.
The interim embassy will
contain office space for the
ambassador and “a small
staff,” she said.
“By the end of next year,
we intend to open a new
embassy Jerusalem annex on
the Arnona compound that
will provide the ambassador
and his team with expanded
interim office space,” she
added. Trump broke with
decades of policy in
December to announce US
recognition of Jerusalem as
Israel’s capital and a pledge
to move the embassy, drawing
near global condemnation,
enraging the
Palestinians and sparking
days of unrest in the
Palestinian territories.
Attacks across
Afghanistan leave
dozens dead
KABUL: A suicide
bomber killed at least two
and wounded seven in an
attack claimed by the Islamic
State group in the diplomatic
area of Afghanistan’s capital
Saturday, and at least 18 soldiers
died in an attack on a
checkpoint by Taliban insurgents
in the country’s west,
authorities said.
Interior Ministry
spokesman Najib Danish
said the Kabul attack took
place in the Shash Darak area
near NATO headquarters and
not far from the U.S.
Embassy. Danish said the initial
casualty count could rise.
The Islamic State group
in a statement on its website
claimed responsibility. In
western Farah province, at
least 18 soldiers were killed
when their checkpoint came
under attack by Taliban
insurgents, said Dawlat
Waziri, spokesman for
Defense Ministry. He said
two other soldiers were
wounded in attack in Bala
Buluk district. Qari Yusouf
Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman,
claimed responsibility
for the attack in a statement.
Meanwhile, an Afghan
official said at least three
security personnel were
killed in separate suicide
bombing attacks in southern
Helmand province.
RAKHINE: Three bombs have
exploded in Sittwe, the capital of
Myanmar’s restive Rakhine province,
police says. A police officer was slightly
injured in the blasts. It was unclear
who was behind them, police said. One
of the bombs went off near the home of
a local official. The others went off
near a court and a record office.
MOGADISHU: Two car
bombings killed 38 people
in the Somali capital
Mogadishu on Friday, the
city’s main ambulance service
told on Saturday.
“We have seen at least 38
people dead,” said
Abdukadir Abdurahman
Aden of the Aamin
Ambulance of the bombings
that targeted the presidential
palace and a hotel.
The first blast, followed
by gunfire, occurred at a
security checkpoint close to
Villa Somalia, the name for
the seat of government,
while a second followed
soon after at a hotel, according
to police.
The Shabaab Islamist
militant group claimed the
attacks in a statement posted
online, saying it was targeting
the government and
security services. The blasts
follow weeks of relative
calm in Mogadishu.
According to officials,
the main attack involved the
use of a vehicle loaded with
explosives attempting to
breach a checkpoint leading
to the presidential palace,
Death toll rises to 38 in
Mogadishu bombings
but security forces prevented
the assault.
“The security forces
foiled the intent of the terrorists.
They were aiming for
key targets but they could
not even go closer, there
were five of them killed by
the security force,” said
Abdulahi Ahmed, a security
officer.
Myanmar: Bombs explode in capital
of restive Rakhine state
More than half a million mainly
Muslim Rohingya from Rakhine fled
the destruction of their homes last year
in what the UN called ethnic cleansing.
Villages where Rohingya had lived
were burned and several thousand
people were killed in retaliation after
Rohingya militants staged a series of
attacks on police outposts. The military
in Myanmar (Burma) says it is
fighting militants and denies targeting
civilians.
There has also been tension
between the authorities and ethnic
Rakhine Buddhists after seven people
were killed last month when police
opened fire on a crowd trying to seize
a local government office.
Daesh not over, US relocating it: Iran’s Zarif
TEHRAN: Iranian
Foreign Minister
Mohammad Javad Zarif
says the United States is
regularly relocating Daesh
terrorists to outside of the
Middle East, where they
had been based before losing
all the territory they
had occupied.
Foreign Minister Zarif
made the remarks during
an event called the Patterns
of Regional Order in the
Post-ISIS Era at the Tehran
University on Saturday.
The US transfer of the
Daesh elements from the
Syrian cities of Hasakah,
Mayadin, and Dayr al-
Zawr as well as other areas
to outside the region “is a
dangerous development
that has had a regular pattern,”
he said.
“Their (the terrorists’)
communication network
remains in place, their
leaders remain [alive or at
large], and they still
receive financial support;
so we must expect the reemergence
of the threat
any day,” the Iranian foreign
minister warned.
Zarif also stressed that
although Daesh had been
defeated territorially, its
ideological and financial
resources coming from the
region and beyond had yet
to be destroyed.
“One of the West’s
major mistakes is that they
believe that Daesh is
over,” he said. “[But] the
conditions that created
Daesh in the region are
still present. Daesh is the
birth child of the US invasion
of Iraq and, before
that, the Israeli oppression
people.”
The top Iranian diplomat
also put forward an
initiative for security in the
region that includes dialog
US not acting against al-Nusra terrorists
in Syria's Eastern Ghouta: Lavrov
DAMASCUS: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov has warned against the threat of the Takfiri
Jabhat Fateh al-Sham militant group, formerly known
as al-Nusra Front, as the main source of violence in
Syria's Eastern Ghouta region, censuring the US for not
taking any serious action against the terror group.
"Jabhat al-Nusra, which is the main problem in Eastern
Ghouta, as I mentioned, is consciously or unconsciously
being treated equally with the critics and accusers of
the Syrian government. Jabhat al-Nusra is not being
touched," Lavrov said during a joint press conference
with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov in
Moscow on Friday. "We still do not have evidence that
the coalition led by the United States is viewing Jabhat
al-Nusra as a real target.
in the Persian Gulf.
Daesh started offensives
in Iraq and Syria in
2014, occupying territory
in the two Arab countries
and establishing a self-proclaimed
“caliphate.” Soon,
the Iraqi and Syrian armies
— both receiving advisory
military help from Iran —
galvanized to retake
Daesh-held territory.
The terrorist group was
gradually stripped of all
the land it had occupied in
the two Arab countries.
Earlier this month, the
Russian presidential
Syria war: UN Security
Council truce vote delayed
NEW YORK: The UN Security Council is struggling
to agree a resolution seeking a ceasefire in Syria
and has put back a vote until Saturday. The vote has
already been delayed several times since Thursday.
Russia wanted changes to a draft that calls for a 30-
day calm to allow for aid deliveries and medical evacuations.
Western diplomats have accused Russia,
Syria's key ally, of stalling for time. France said failure
to act may spell the end of the UN itself.
Minds have been focused amid outrage at the plight
of civilians in the Eastern Ghouta rebel enclave.
Activists say 462 people have now been killed there
this week. Warplanes maintained the bombardment on
Friday, witnesses said. Douma and Hamouriyeh were
among areas hit.
envoy to Afghanistan said
that there were indications
that the US military
was allowing Daesh terrorists
to infiltrate
Afghanistan after their
defeats in Syria and Iraq.
A high-ranking Russian
official accuses the US
military of allowing Daesh
terrorists to infiltrate
Youth’s role imperative for economic
development of country: Interior Minister ISLAMABAD:
LAHORE: Interior
Minister Ahsan Iqbal says
the youth have a crucial
role in economic development
of a country.
Addressing a workshop
in Lahore on
Saturday, Ahsan Iqbal
said the future of
Pakistan is linked with its
youth. He said we have to
train the youth as per our
future requirements. He
said the incumbent government
is making concerted
efforts to make the
youth an asset of the
country.
The Interior Minister
said we are digitally
empowering the youth to
ensure their contribution
ISLAMABAD: The
Securities and Exchange
Commission of Pakistan
(SECP) has introduced
amendments to the
Securities and Futures
Advisers (Licensing and
Operations) Regulations.
A statement issued by
the commission here Friday
said the amendments have
been notified to make advisory
regulatory regime
more practicable and conducive,
where as the compensation
mandatory advisory licensing
requirement for securities
brokers have been
withdrawn.
The securities brokers
have been allowed to provide
securities advisory to
their brokerage customers,
being incidental to the conduct
of their business without
receiving any separate
thereof.
Moreover, the securities
brokers have also been
allowed to distribute units
of mutual funds and voluntary
pension funds of multiple
assets management
companies (AMCs).
The advisory regime has
been segregated into two
segments,that is advisory
with portfolio management
to be governed under the
non-bank finance companies
(NBFC) regime
whereas advisory with distribution
of units of mutual
funds and voluntary pension
funds of multiple
AMCs to be dealt under the
amended Securities and
Futures Advisers
(Licensing and Operations)
Regulations, 2017.
Considering the dynamics
of local capital markets,
the SECP has decided to
grant licenses only to corporate
entities for undertaking
any regulated activity in
the capital markets and not
to any individuals.
In order to help broaden
the investor base, banks
have been allowed to distribute
units of mutual
funds and voluntary pension
regulatory requirements.
In order to facilitate the
existing distributors, the
deadline to obtain license
The rationalized licensing
regime for securities
would contribute to reducing
regulatory burden and
cost of doing business for
assured the delegation that
Pakistan gives immense
Pakistan invited the
Afghan Minister for
Islamabad in January 2018,
although Afghanistan has
issues in bilateral
and transit trade and have
been working vigorously to
resolve the impediments
from the Pakistan side.
would affect the business
and industrial activities.
They said as per statement
of Awais Ahmed
Khan Leghari, Federal
Minister for Power, despite
reduction of 1.2 percent in
transmission and distribution
losses, the annual
power sector losses were
poised to reach Rs.360 billion
this year that should be
a cause of concern for the
policymakers. They said it
was encouraging that
Pakistan was now surplus
in energy generation, but
increasing T&D losses
would pose new challenges
to the country. They said in
2013, annual T&D losses
in Pakistan were Rs.120
billion that have increased
to Rs.360 billion which
showed that power companies
have failed to overcome
these losses. They
should government should
pay urgent attention to this
issue for remedial measures.
Zubair Ahmed Malik,
Chairman Founder Group
said that according to a
World Bank report, T&D
losses in South Korea were
3 percent of the total production,
4 percent in Japan,
5 percent in China, 6 percent
in Thailand and
Malaysia, 9 percent in
Indonesia, 11 percent in Sri
Lanka, 13 percent in Iran,
but more than 17 percent in
Pakistan which showed
that T&D losses were
much higher in our country.
He stressed that government
should give target
of bringing T&D losses to
less than 10 percent to the
power companies that
would provide uninterrupted
power supply to business
and Industry. It would
also help in promoting
investment, creating new
jobs, improving tax revenue
and strengthening the
overall economy.
struck in the head and
the ball went a distance
struck for a boundary 6.
Andrew was assessed
no signs of
of concussion.
He continued to bowl
and also to bat later in
the day without symptoms",
the bowler's
speaking exclusively,
said.
"Given the extremity
and force of the ball
to monitor and have
Andrew assessed by
appropriate medical
practitioners".
Andrew is a tough
cricketer and I think was
lucky to not have sustained
any significant
damage. He received a
small graze to the top of
the head where the ball
struck but nothing more
that that. Whether
Andrew chooses to wear
a helmet in the future
will be up to him", the
coach concluded.
