IHF WELCOMES

NEW PRESIDENT

DAVID CAMPBELL HAS been elected as

the new president of The Irish Hairdressers

Federation (IHF). David is the co-founder

of House of Colour and is joined by new

vice-president Danielle Lloyd, co-owner of

Lloyds Hair – 2017 Most Wanted Supreme

Team winners.

This marks an exciting time for the IHF,

with the new leadership team planning a

three-year Legacy plan that will see the

launch of new initiatives such as the Master

Craftsman Hairdressing Diploma, the IHF

mobile app, an IHF podcast and the Spark

Sessions, a nationwide event to inspire female

salon owners.

“The IHF is the supporting body for every

hairdresser in our industry. We will continue

to grow throughout Ireland so every salon

owner has an even stronger support base,”

said David. “We aim to continue to educate the

business community within the federation and

expand our phone helpline for those who need

on the spot attention and advice.”

The IHF executive committee will also

work to build a sustainable future for young

hairdressers, following the recent approval

of the first professional Irish Hairdressing

Apprenticeship by the Apprenticeship Council

last year.

House of Colour celebrates

THE ALEX HOTEL IN Dublin welcomed the 130-strong House of Colour team for its annual

awards. The salon group was not only celebrating its successes over the past year, but also

looking back over a 20-year history. David Campbell hosted the evening, which saw the

Abbey Street branch (pictured above) win salon of the year, and Drogheda win creative salon

and premier salon, among other awards. The trainee dream team was also announced,

the lucky members of which will learn alongside the creative team. Here’s to 20 more years!

THE FOURTH ANNUAL Phorest Salon

Owners Summit saw more than 500 salon

owners and managers come together in Dublin

for a day of expert advice. The keynote speaker

was Tabatha Coffey, salon owner, business

coach and star of TV show Tabatha Takes

Over, who inspired and motivated delegates.

She was joined by Gavin Hoare, salon

manager at Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa,

who discussed the universal needs of clients;

and Valerie Delforge, who revealed practical

ways to motivate your staff. Steven Martin,

director of Influence at Work, spoke about

his six principles of persuasion – reciprocity,

scarcity, authority, consistency, likeability

and social proof. There were also a number of

workshops on the day, which ended with food

and entertainment at NoLita.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

Cut and Sew teamed up with visual artists

community Collective Dublin to create

a documentary about the lifestyle and

subcultures surrounding the legendary

barbershop. Not Just A Barbershop was

filmed over five months and showcases the

special relationship barbers enjoy with the

community around them. Cut and Sew owner,

Sean Bryan, said: “There’s a certain code

between barbers and clients – what gets said in

the shop stays there – but there’s a loyalty too

as we grow with our clients and go through life

with them.” The documentary was launched

at a sold-out screening at the Sugar Club in

Dublin, with live DJ sets and a Q&A where

Sean, director Mark Logan and videographer

Kenneth Adams shared their experience of

making the film.

In today’s on-demand world,

customers expect instant results.

If they are using social media to

look for a salon, it’s so much more

powerful if they can fi nd, book

and pay for your services in that

moment. Make sure that your

appointment system is linked to your

Facebook page and you have an

easy link through to your Instagram.

Mobile is everything and it’s likely

many customers will be viewing

posts on the go. Give them the

best experience with content that’s

optimised for all platforms.

Keep your accounts up-to-date

with regular updates and news.

If someone sees your profi le hasn’t

been updated for a while, they are

much less likely to engage with you.

First impressions count, so if the

fi rst time someone meets you is on

social media, make sure that the

experience matches the one they’ll

get in the salon.

Respond to your customers

messages and feedback. Whether

good or bad, If a customer posts

something on one of your accounts,

acknowledge them and try to resolve

any issues.

CLIENTS ARE MORE educated than ever

before; they know what they want, and want

to get it for the best price. This means that

they are becoming more likely to turn away

from the salon in favour of the internet to

buy their beauty products; in fact, according

to research from ghd, as many as 94 per cent

of people aged 18 to 30 have bought hair

products online. So, is this a cause for worry

among salon owners?

“Like in many other businesses, online

retail is a definite threat,” says Chrissie

Bazynski, master stylist at Sitstil in Dublin.

“It is quick and convenient to compare

prices online and check out reviews from

other buyers, all in the palm of your hand.

This isn’t just younger buyers – older

clients have become more and more aware

of the online world and are using it to

ensure they get the best value for

their money.”

This can be concerning in two ways.

First, there is the obvious loss of revenue

if clients stop buying products from their

salon. Second, clients may not always

purchase the best products for their hair

type. “With so many brands and product

ranges available these days it can be very

difficult for clients to select the right

products to help manage and treat any

specific hair and scalp concerns,” explains

Annissa Simmons, marketing manager at

Hugh Campbell Hair Group.

So, how do you ensure your clients are

coming into the salon to stock up their

bathroom shelves?

At Kopper salons in Cork, there are many

retail options, so clients are offered plenty

of choice. “We don’t offer special deals on

products, however we do offer over seven

ranges and each has slightly different price

points,” owner Sabrina Hill explains. “I

feel that because we put a huge amount of

time and effort into training our team on

the different benefits of each range that it’s

always more about the right product than

the actual cost.”

Sabrina is adamant that by giving

clients specially tailored product advice, you

are offering them something unique: “We

educate clients on their hair type, explaining

that if they are going to spend money on hair

services and want longevity of their colour,

then they need to maintain it by using

excellent quality products. I always explain

to each client that we are like a tag team – we

provide excellent healthy hair colour and

they have to look after it at home.”

Aidan Fitzgerald, owner of Aidan

Fitzgerald Hair Salon in Blackrock, has

found that if you actually embrace the

world of online, you can use it as a way to

encourage clients to make purchases in

the salon. “Often people worry that

professional products are expensive, but

they aren’t if they’re used properly,” he

says. “We can use social media to show

clients what is available – by engaging

with people who are already looking for

things online, we can get them into the

salon. We can also use it to share tips on how

to use professional products to maintain

their hairstyle afterwards, which can create

repeat business.”

Loyalty schemes are also a way to entice

customers and keep them. Occasions

Hairdressing runs a scheme where clients

build up points after each visit, which they

can redeem against a product or treatment.

“We find this to be a great way to introduce

clients to a new take-home product, whether

it be a serum, heat protector or styling

product,” explains Ciaran Dowd, creative

director at the salon group. “Ninety-nine per

cent of the time they will purchase another

product along with their free one and,

having used their new product and loved it,

they are sure to purchase it from us again.”

my parents, teachers and

fellow students, I have always

questioned everything. I want

all the answers, so I can then

accept that things just ‘are’.

Educate! The first thing Beth

is you will be learning

hairdressing forever. I once

worked with a stylist who had

‘done their training’ and I

couldn’t understand this.

SO FAR?

Being a semi-finalist in the L’Oréal

Colour Trophy STAR Award two

years ago was amazing. Seeing so

much talent, hard work and different

ways of doing hair inspired me.

Also, the Toni&Guy annual assistant

competitions always motivate me to

push myself. Being awarded in all the

categories I took part in gave me a

boost of confidence.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

I have always looked up to the

educators from whom I have learnt

so much. I hope in the next few years

to become someone our juniors can

think of in the same way and get to

share my passion and knowledge

with them.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG?

The day I attended my first

Once the domain of club kids and later footballers’

wives, extensions now offer clients a quick and

effective route to something they crave – better hair

EXTENSIONS IS ONE of the fastest-growing areas

of hairdressing. Gone are the days of obvious fakery –

today’s pieces are discreet, high quality and perfect for

troubleshooting many of the problems your clients run into.

“I personally wear extensions all the time and when I

tell my clients they cannot believe it – when they think of

extensions they automatically think of seeing bonds, fakelooking

hair and gaps,” explains Susan Hannon, owner

of Voodoo Hair Design in Boherbue, Co. Cork. “But it’s

completely the opposite now. Extensions services offer a

great advantage to our salon; with many now being 100 per

cent human hair it means you can curl, straighten and do

everything as you would normally do.”

Indeed, innovation is a key factor in the services now on

offer. Time-poor clients can rejoice, as extensions are much

quicker to apply than ever before, and you can get more bang

for your buck. Great Lengths has just launched GL Tapes,

which are not only fast – a full head can be applied in an

hour – but also high quality and lightweight. Lasting six to

eight weeks between maintenance appointments, they can be

removed and reapplied up to three times, helping to mitigate

the higher price point extensions often come with. And with

more than 58 shades to choose from, salons can promise the

perfect colour match.

Karen Kenny, senior Great Lengths extensions specialist at

Hession Hairdressing, has found that extensions are a quick

and easy way to offer volume. “One of the most common

client problems is not being happy with the density of their

hair,” she explains. “So we use micro extensions in what we

call filler rows – it’s an instant solution.”

Joan O Meara, director at Allure College, which runs expert

extensions courses, agrees that extensions can bulk up

lacklustre hair, leaving you with a happy client.

She says: “Clients may feel their hair is too fine or they

want it longer. The stylist can apply the extensions around

the sides of the hair to add extra volume and then cut the

length of the extensions to be the same length as the client’s

own hair, making it look and feel much more natural. This

gives the client so much confidence.”

And extensions can also help to hide the effects of damage

when clients are trying to grow their hair, as Lorna Flannery,

Great Lengths extensions specialist at Newcastle Hair and

Beauty in Dublin, has found.

“A lot of my clients find it difficult to get length in their hair

and it can be difficult to maintain the quality and thickness

in the ends due to breakage,” she explains. “It takes a lot of

patience to wait for the hair to repair and grow, so I would

often recommend Great Lengths to clients looking for

that fulller, longer look. It’s so rewarding for us to

be able to offer such natural-looking extensions to

clients. We see some incredible results.”

And with some business advice from Stephanie

Stevenson, creative director at Prostyles, you can be

safe in the knowledge your new extensions service

won’t leave you out of pocket. “It’s a salon service,

and the training and knowledge, added to the premium hair

quality, all have a price. You simply cannot engage in the

‘cheap seats’ here. The operational costs can be prohibitive,

simply because of the standard practice of purchasing the

window between consultation and fitting.

“Always take a deposit, but don’t just take a booking fee –

take the total cost of the hair that you will be applying. This

way your money has cleared, the hair has arrived, you haven’t

parted with a penny more, and cashflow is sound.”

It’s also no secret colour is having a huge moment. With

extensions you can open a world of opportunity for clients

who don’t want to take the plunge with traditional dyes.

“We use Great Lengths to add lighter pieces and different

tones to client’s hair who prefer not to colour or don’t want

to make a commitment,” explains Mel Kuljancic,

hair extension specialist at Davey Davey

in Dublin. “A lot of our clients say

extensions has given them a confidence

boost. They love the natural look and

CALLING

“WELCOME TO YOUR WEEK in paradise!” said Sara Jones, senior vice-president

and general manager of Joico, on the opening day of the brand’s first-ever Global

Destination Education – a seven-day learning extravaganza filled with industry stars,

trends, tips and techniques of the moment, all of which (be still our beating heart)

was held at an all-inclusive five-star resort in tropical Punta Cana in the Dominican

Republic. The 1,000 hairdressers who’d been flown in from 28 countries around the

globe could barely believe their luck.

The impressive list of educators included Joico international guest artists David

Murray (Ireland) and Ryan Nicoletti-Dowd (UK), as well as former London and now

NYC-based session stylist, Richard Mannah. This trio led the creative charge, showing

highly technical cuts, graphically shaped curls and cool colour combinations that had

more of a “street” edge.

We were also impressed by the US and Canadian stars, particularly Confessions

of a Hairstylist blogger Jenny Strebe’s braids masterclass, the punchy colour

melts of Larisa Love and the sexy blondes taught by Hollywood’s Denis de Souza

and Zoe Carpenter, who both kept the focus on lucrative, commercial looks that drive

business forward.

And the folk at Joico know how to party, too! After morning classes, afternoon and

evening downtime was filled with endless poolside cocktails and DJ sets, an incredible

Fashion Rocks hair show, where everyone got to dress up as their favourite rock star,

and – to climax – a super-glam white-and-gold party on the beach, complete with

fireworks display. Now that’s how you go out with a bang!
