“I can’t even put it into words,
it was such an amazing experience
standing on stage and
looking out at a whole bunch of
people and having a whole bunch
of people around you that love
doing the same thing,” said
Aiden.
His voice coach, Rhonda
Sylvester of Stettler, who nominated
Aiden for this once in a
lifetime experience, said his
voice is unique.
“He has a unique voice with a
lot of musicality to it. There’s no
words for it. It’s just unique. Not
the same voice type or style of a
lot of people. It’s special because
it is unique and not very many
When nominating students
Rhonda also takes into consideration
a student’s work ethic.
The County of Paintearth council
has given approval for Emergency
Management to

Thousands of students
apply for the
approximate 250
spots so another
factor for Rhonda when endorsing a
youth is the student’s personality.
“The kids that I recommend have to
have an outgoing personality.
“I want kids who are outgoing to go
and make the most of it and not be shy
and get themselves out there and just
really have a good time through music
and the experience of being with other
people and kids with the same love of
them.”
Aiden was surprised to find out he
was one of the elite vocalists selected
Paintearth council
questionnaire during the regular
meeting on Feb. 21.
“We are asking the questions that
people need to ask themselves,” stated
Director of Emergency Management,
Alix council
to sing at Carnegie Hall.
Shailyn Anderson from Castor and
Emma Werbowesky from Stettler, also
performed, who have all been singing
with Rhonda Sylvester in Stettler since
a very young age.
There were more than 12,000 nominations
for the 2018 series from which
700 were chosen.
Kobi performed in the Honours
Concert Choir while Anderson and
Werbowesky performed in the
Women’s Choir.
Top voice and instrumental students
from around the world participated in
Carnegie Hall’s Grade 9 – 12 performance
series where they rehearse and
perform under master conductors.
“The people was the best part,” said
Aiden. “The songs and the whole performance
was great but the people
there was my favourite.”
Aiden started taking voice lessons in
about Grade 2.
“I sang more classical and opera
style music.”
The Grade 10 student also plays the
piano and he’s not certain if he will
pursue a career in music.
Amount paying to lease holder questioned
Lisa Joy
ECA Review
The Village of Alix, by moving
$56,000 in the books from a line item
from capital to financing, saves the village
$60,000 in penalty fees.
In January Alix council refinanced
Railway House (the closed
Moonwalkers Activity Centre) for
about $1.4 million, which reduced the
village’s annual payments from
$138,789 to only $72,000 a year.
That means the village won’t have to
pay a $60,000 early lease buyout penalty
fee to the lease holder of the
building after council unanimously
voted in favour of re-designating the
remaining $56,000 in its lease agreement
from capital to finance in its 2018
budget.
“Instead of using it as a capital portion
it’s a payment of financing and
pays down some of the debt,” Alix’s
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)
Michelle White told council during its
regular meeting Feb. 21. “It’s just a
wording choice that makes it an eligible
expense.”
Alix Coun. Vicki Soltermann asked
if council was “ever going to see the
actual figure,” how much they are
giving to the lease holder of
Moonwalkers.
CAO White said staff submitted the
paper work to Alberta Capital Finance
on Feb. 14 - 15 and the $1.4 million refinancing
request was a “guesstimate to
ensure we have enough.”
She added staff is still clarifying
questions that Alberta Capital Finance
has arising from the application.
The borrowing bylaw was a result of
an August 2017 Ministerial Order from
Shaye Anderson, Minister of
Municipal Affairs after completing an
inspection of the village at the request
of local residents who had submitted
two petitions to the provincial
government.
The minister directed the village to
have a qualified accounting firm complete
a review of the Moonwalkers
lease and recalculate the village’s 2016
total debt and debt service under the
province’s debt limit regulation.
Chickens can now roost
Alix residents, if approved, can have
up to four urban chickens in their yard
after Alix council gave its urban
chicken bylaw third and final reading
during council’s regular meeting Feb.
2.
The coops can’t be larger than 10
metres squared in floor area and no
higher than 2.4 metres.
There will be an annual license fee
and the license isn’t transferable from
one person to another. A license, however,
is transferable from one property
to another if approved.
Members of the 2018 Honors Performance line up for their performance, including Aiden Kobi, third from the right, front row. Rhonda
Sylvester’s students Shailyn Anderson of Castor and Emma Werbowesky of Stettler performed in the Honors Women’s Choir.
path ever became
in it.”
Management Act of Alberta.
The survey will be sent out with tax
notices which also aligns with
Canada’s National Emergency
Preparedness Week.
“Our concerns are the protection of
residents lives and property,” said
Pawsey.
This type of information could have
been useful during the Oct. 2 snow
especially regarding equipment and
supply knowledge, he added.
The form contains questions
regarding contact and ownership of
the land and farm and yard information
such as livestock handling,
dangerous goods and the available
equipment.
The questionnaire is voluntary but
is highly encouraged by Emergency
Management to be completed. Once a
completed form is returned to the
county office it will be scanned into
the software system where it will be
available for future use.
“We hope to never have to use this
information,” said Pawsey “but it is
good to have on hand”
“ I think this is a good idea,” said
Coun. Doreen Blumhagen, “I can see
being Oct. 2 was the perfect example of
how we never expected it, but it would
have been pretty handy to know.”
New pickup purchase
Coun. Morris Wiart moved the purchase
of a new 2018 2500 Ram 4x4
pickup truck for the Agriculture
Services Board. The new vehicle will
be replacing a 2008 Dodge 2500 and
will be going to the mower fleet of
vehicles.
The cost of the new pickup truck
$33,780.25 plus tax, just slightly over
the budget of $33,000. The purchase is
to be funded by restricted surplus.
Stop sign removal
Coun. Tyrrill Hewitt moved to
remove the lone stop sign along
Township Road 370 stopping west
bound traffic on Range Road 133.
This will create an uncontrolled
intersection.
The stop sign was originally put in
place, approximately five years ago, as
there were poor sight lines due to the
dense brush.
This past fall county workers
cleared the brush and back-sloped the
trees near the intersection, by doing
this the sight lines are now adequate.
Morrin council
FOIP request generates animated discussion
Linda Stillinger
ECA Review
A recent FOIP request generated
animated discussion at the
Village of Morrin’s regular
council meeting on Feb. 21.
According to information provided
to council by Morrin
Chief Administrative Officer
(CAO) Annette Plachner,
someone from the village has
made a FOIP request to
Municipal Affairs concerning
past village grant information.
CAO Plachner appeared
clearly upset that someone had
chosen to take this route to
obtain the information
declaring, “If people want to
know something, come ask me.”
Mayor Howard Helton
acknowledged the process, as
something people are entitled
to.
“Fine and dandy, come here
and ask me. I’m not hiding it. I
don’t have anything to hide,”
Plachner asserted.
Contending that it is unnecessary
for people to use this
process to obtain information,
Plachner stated, “It’s a little bit
childish, I think.”
“It’s an avenue that people
think they have to take. They
obviously feel that they have to,
so I guess it’s trying to cultivate
an atmosphere where people
don’t feel they have to do that.
“That’s something that
maybe has to be dealt with,”
stated Mayor Helton “but you
can’t put a sign out saying no
FOIP.”
Land Use Bylaw
Changes in the Municipal
Government Act (MGA) have
prompted an amendment of
Morrin’s land use bylaw.
Council took the first step
toward change by giving unanimous
first reading to Bylaw 358,
an amendment to Landuse
Bylaw 345.
Land use bylaw amendments
require three readings by
council and a public hearing.
CAO Plachner advised
council of the requirement to
advertise the proposed bylaw
amendment and public hearing
for two consecutive weeks,
asking for a motion to hold the
public hearing.
The public hearing will be
held in April.
The hearing will provide the
public with an opportunity to
speak for or against the
amendment.
Fire Department
Morrin Fire Chief Darcy
Davidson came before council
to address the needs of the village
fire department.
Seeking to fulfil mandated
requirements, Chief
Davidson put together a list
of the materials needed,
presenting council with
rough quotes from
suppliers.
During his presentation,
Davidson stated, “My
largest concern right now is
I’d like to replace some
existing fire hose and add a
little bit to our complement
as well.”
Mayor Helton advised the
fire chief to come back with
firmer quotes after consultation
with the county.
“Obviously council needs
to see some firm figures,”
he noted.
Morrin and Starland
County hold a 70/30 cost
sharing agreement for fire
services.
Morrin’s 30 per cent share
of the requested supplies is
estimated at $7000.
Council approved the
expenditures in theory,
subject to firm price quotes
and county acceptance.
At the conclusion of his
report, Chief Davidson
informed council that volunteers
logged 892 man
hours in 2017, involving firefighting,
vehicle accidents
and training.
The Morrin Fire
Department has 16 volunteer
members, nine who are
very active.
Other business
A motion to approve a
funding request from the
Morrin Municipal Library
Board was given unanimous
approval.
The library will receive a
$500 operating grant from
the village.
Following an in-camera, a
motion was passed to initiate
an annual perforance
review for the Chief
Administrative Officer.
The review will take place
Neat and tidy farmstead was a must
Gordon Saunders was born in
Castor, Ab. Nov. 20, 1921. He grew up
on the farm and after completing
normal school training in Calgary, he
taught in one room schools for four
years before returning to the farm in
1945.
Gordon and Connie were married
June 16, 1974. They both enjoyed life
on the farm, riding horses, feeding
cattle and operating the farm
equipment.
Keeping the farmstead and garden
travelled from Tuktoyaktuk to
Galveston and from Tofino to Cape
Breton, no year was really complete
without a trip to the mountains in the
summer camping or in the winter
skiing or perhaps both.
Gordon and Connie moved into
Paintearth Lodge in November of 2017
and then Gordon moved to Castor
moving to Coronation on Jan. 10, 2018
Orale Kewley Peterson
Sept. 7, 1927 – Feb. 22, 2018
Orale Kewley Peterson was born
Sept. 7, 1927 in Carruthers, Sk. to
Fredrik Peterson and Francis Mary
Kewley. He passed away
peacefully in the Stettler
Hospital with family at his
side.
Orale was the fourth of
five children that grew up
on the Carruthers family
farm. As a young man
Orale worked on the family
farm and helped carve a
living out of the prairie sod.
Eventually he took over the Peterson
farm and the passion for
farming never left his blood.
In 1966 Orale moved to the Bulwark
area where he set down deep roots and
engaged in mixed farming as he
worked to raise 11 children.
Orale is survived by his children,
Daryl (Brenda), Wynne, Connie, Ricky,
Friela (Kevin), Rodney (Peggy),
Dwayne, Shiena, Todd; daughter-inlaw
Carol; step children Wayne
(Jolene), Cathy; sister Ruth; sisters-inlaw
Rita and Lil.
He leaves a legacy of 19 grandchildren;
three step grandchildren; 32
great grandchildren and one great
great grandchild. They all have a very
special place in his heart. He especially
loved cuddling babies and over
the years he has had many to hold and
spoil.
Orale was predeceased by his wife
Bev, sons Lloyd and Lyle, granddaughter
Rhondi, brothers Carl and
Lorne, sister Pearl, brothers -in-law
Stuart and Alex.
Orale never let the grass grow under
his feet and for most of his life he was
hard to keep up with.
He was always up for an adventure:
fishing, bike riding, curling, skating,
watching hockey and wood working,
or anything that included risk!
He loved to camp, fish and the
“Narrows” was his favourite hangout
spot.
If there was ever downtime, he
would be challenging someone near to
a game of crib or pool and if no one
took him up on the challenge, he
would be playing solitaire. A man in
constant motion!
In 1988 Orale married Bev
Thacker and relocated to Red
Deer, starting their retirement
which allowed them to travel,
camp and follow the Scotties
and Brier curling championships
for many years. He
remained an avid curler well
into his 80’s!
Orale was known to rarely
travel directly from point A to
point B, but rather to drive
every back road checking out
the crops as he went. If there
was a Tim Horton’s or an Auction
Mart along the way, it was an automatic
STOP!
Orale loved to visit with those he
knew and those he didn’t. No one was
a stranger to him.
Securing Alberta’s future through energy diversification
Ab. Gov’t Press release
Alberta will build on its strengths
by leveraging billions of dollars in new
private-sector investment to create
thousands of jobs in a diversified
energy industry.
Premier Rachel Notley announced
that support for full-scale commercialization
of partial-upgrading
technologies will be among the government’s
next steps toward energy
diversification, taking action on recommendations
from the Energy
Diversification Advisory Committee
(EDAC).
In addition to support for the commercialization
of partial upgrading,
work is underway to ensure companies
have access to the natural gas
liquids they need to grow private
investment in Alberta-based natural
gas processing and to build on the
early success of Alberta’s
Petrochemicals Diversification
Program.
Details will be announced in the
coming weeks.
“The deep history of NOVA
Chemicals stands as a success story
for diversification in this province. We
have seen the positive impact of
employing Alberta’s considerable
resources, innovative technology and
talented people to encourage billions
in new investment, ensure highpaying
jobs for Albertans and create
lasting growth in our communities.
The government will implement the
EDAC report will build upon Peter
Lougheed’s legacy, creating the next
generation of value-added opportunities
and allow companies like ours to
continue to grow here in Alberta.
A study by the University of Calgary
estimated the impact of partial
upgrading could be worth up to $22
billion in GDP growth for Alberta over
20 years.
Partial upgrading
Partial upgrading reduces the thickness
of oil sands bitumen so it can flow
through pipelines more easily, without
having to be blended with diluent.
This increases the volume of
bitumen product that can be
shipped through pipelines.
Partial upgrading would
enhance oil sands industry
competitiveness by reducing
industry costs, increasing
pipeline capacity and
enabling more refineries to
process Alberta bitumen
product.
It would not limit future
opportunities for full
refining within Alberta.
Energy Diversification
Advisory Committee
EDAC was appointed by
government in October 2016
with a mandate to engage
Albertans and explore
opportunities to increase
the value of our energy
resources, create jobs and
attract new investment.
The committee has submitted
its final report,
including 36
recommendations.
The government has
accepted the committee’s
advice and is moving forward
immediately on a
number of fronts.
Membership on the committee
included Jeanette
Patell – vice-president,
Guest editorial
Canada is facing
a crisis of quality
journalism
V I E W P O I N T S
The opinions expressed are not necessarily
the opinions of this newspaper.
by John Honderich
“We should all be very concerned by
the crisis facing quality journalism.”
The Trudeau government has either
ignored or rejected virtually all the
recommendations proposed to help
support newspapers. What particularly
stings is that the vast majority
would not cost taxpayers anything.
Reporters are being laid off in
droves, many smaller communities
are now “news deserts” with no local
newspaper, and the amount of serious
investigative journalism is declining
sharply.
And if you believe, as I do, that a vigorous,
investigative press is essential
for a strong democracy, we should all
be very concerned.
“
Ottawa’s advertising
strategy had resulted in a
“misalignment” of the
reality that many
Canadians still rely on
traditional media.
At the beginning of its mandate, the
Trudeau government seemed to share
that concern. It commissioned the
Public Policy Forum, under the direction
of veteran editor and journalist Ed
Greenspon, to study the issue.
The final report, entitled “The
Shattered Mirror,” was released a year
ago. It outlined in vivid detail the crisis
and put forward 12 core
recommendations.
The government also commissioned
the Commons committee on Canadian
Heritage, under Vancouver MP and
former journalist Hedy Fry, to conduct
a parallel investigation. After months
of hearings and dozens of witnesses, it
came up with 20 practical
recommendations.
Now that the Trudeau government is
more than halfway through its mandate,
what has been its response?
My view? Studied indifference.
Across the board, the Trudeau government
has either ignored or rejected
virtually all the recommendations.
What particularly stings is that the
vast majority would not cost taxpayers
anything.
To make matters worse, in
announcing her government’s decisions,
Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly
emphasized her government wasn’t
Limited
interested in bailing out “industry
models that are no longer viable.”
Left starkly unclear was where
quality journalism would then originate.
And newspaper executives,
myself included, were left asking: if
this is what the Trudeau government
really thinks, then why did we go
through this lengthy process?
To illustrate the point, let me chronicle
the fate of 10 recommendations:
1. Copyright protection for newspapers:
Under Canadian copyright law,
original content from Canadian newspapers
can be easily duplicated and
distributed on the internet for free.
This has become a real annoyance,
particularly when aggregators, bloggers
or others use original material
without permission or fee.
The Public Policy Forum recommended
Ottawa amend the law to help
newspapers protect their content “for a
reasonable time.” Newspapers, understandably,
have also argued they
should be paid for their content.
The result? Nothing to date.
2. Facebook and Google: These two
multinational giants now control more
than 70 per cent of all digital advertising
in Canada. Yet the playing field
is patently unfair for Canadian media.
Under Canadian tax law, companies
can deduct the cost of advertising only
if ads are placed in Canadian publications.
Yet this law does not apply to the
internet.
So not only do Facebook and Google
not pay corporate tax or GST/HST,
because they are headquartered outside
Canada, but they accept ads on the
same basis as Canadian media.
The list of countries that have
sought to address similar concerns is
impressive: New Zealand, Norway,
South Korea, Japan, Switzerland,
South Africa and Israel, as well as the
European Union. Last month
Australia launched its own
investigation.
Both the Public Policy Forum and
many media groups have asked
Ottawa to do the same.
The result? Nothing to date.
3. Federal government advertising:
For the past several years, Ottawa has
followed a “digital-first” strategy in
placement of federal ads.
That, in turn, has led to a reduction
in the proportion of federal spending
for daily newspaper ads by 96 per cent
and for community newspaper ads by
21 per cent. These figures, importantly,
come directly from the Department of
Canadian Heritage.
Disaster zone in
short order
by Herman Schwenk
In the mid sixties when John
Diefenbaker was the Prime Minister of
Canada, a book was written about him.
This book, “ A Renegade in Power”
was very critical of Diefenbaker.
He was a very domineering and
forceful leader. He was a person who
could not be intimidated. If he decided
on a course of action that was what
was done even if it was a wrong
decision.
During his reign as leader of the
conservative party there was considerable
conflict. The cancelation of the
Avro Arrow was a high profile
example of conflict in the party.
I got thinking about that book this
past week when I was reading about
our current Prime Ministers latest
shenanigans.
Most of the mainstream media still
seem to regard Justin Trudeau as
their poster boy. He has such a nice
gregarious personality. What is there
to not like about him?
They seem not to take notice of the
non-sensical stuff that comes out of his
mouth both now and before he became
the Prime Minister.
His unrealistic political correctness
really came to the forefront a couple
weeks ago when he attempted to correct
a woman at a town hall who used
the term mankind when asking him a
question.
He said that she should have said
“peoplekind, because it is more inclusive
than mankind.”
That exchange went viral all over
the world, and the responses have not
been kind to Trudeau. He is basically a
laughing stock the world over, as he
should be.
Can you imagine the response of the
media if Andrew Scheer were to utter
something that stupid?
The above example is only one of the
many gaffes recently committed by
Trudeau.
“
You may recall a couple of his other
gaffs from before he became Prime
Minister, his statement that the budget
would balance itself and his comment
about how he liked China’s basic dictatorship
because they could make
decisions much faster than we could.
A recent gaffe had to do with the
returning ISIS fighters. He compared
them to Italian families settling in
Montreal after the Second World War
and how they were discriminated
against due to their dress and religion.
Trudeau’s third gaffe was a real doosey
Cont’d from Pg 6
This is a comparison that is really
offensive to immigrants and refugees
who came to Canada for opportunity
and to escape violence.
The ISIS fighters were fighting
against Canadian troops and they all
should have been charged with treason
as soon as they set foot in Canada.
His third gaffe was a real doosey,
when asked about the government’s
troubled relationship with Canada’s
many veterans: “Why are we still
fighting against certain veterans
groups in court? His reply, “because
they’re asking for more than we’re able
to give right now.”
But they were able to give Omar
Cont’d from Pg 6
The issue was fully studied last year
by the Commons standing committee
on government operations and
estimates.
In its final report, it concluded
Ottawa’s advertising strategy had
resulted in a “misalignment” of the
reality that many Canadians still rely
on traditional media. It urged more
spending be directed to traditional
media “including TV, radio and print
media.”
The result? Nothing to date.
4. Digital tax credits: The heritage
committee recommended that newspapers
be given a temporary five-year
tax credit for a portion of the labour
and capital they spend on digital innovation.
In fact, Ontario also had a
digital media tax credit but it has been
discontinued.
The result? Nothing to date.
5. Canada Periodical Fund: Since
before Confederation, this fund and its
precursors have provided financial
support to Canadian magazines and
weeklies.
Maclean’s magazine, for example,
receives $2 million annually from this
fund, allowing it to continue in
operation.
Both the Public Policy Forum and
the heritage committee recommended
that free distribution community
newspapers and daily newspapers be
included in this fund. *The ECA
Review does not receive this funding
because free distribution community
newspapers do not qualify.
The result? Idea rejected.
6. The Canadian Press: Canada’s
national wire service, which celebrated
its 100th anniversary last year,
has had a pension problem for several
decades.
Eight years ago, the three owners of
CP (one being Torstar) went to Ottawa
to see if CP could get an extended
period to meet its obligations. The proposal,
fully supported by CP’s staff,
was enthusiastically endorsed by then
finance minister Jim Flaherty. And it
cost Ottawa nothing.
“CP is too important to this
country,” he told us.
Eight years later, interest rates being
even lower, the three owners returned
to Ottawa to see if this relief could be
extended. In countries such as France,
for example, the French equivalent of
CP is seen as so important to French
democracy that the government
directly subsidizes it.
And what did current Finance
Minister Bill Morneau tell us? “Why
should I do anything special for CP?”
The result? CP’s request was denied.
One year later, CP is entering a different
federal relief program. But it has
been a slog.
7. CP and local journalism: To help
provide news coverage in smaller communities,
the Public Policy Forum
suggested The Canadian Press be
Khadr, a terrorist, $10.5 million and
they were able to spend millions and
billions around the world on climate
change and other feel good green
projects.
The way he rationalizes issues
makes absolutely no common sense.
Can you imagine what Canada
would look like if he actually had dictatorial
power?
There are many countries in the
world today with dictators who are just
as clueless as he is. Each one of those
countries is a disaster zone.
A good example is Zimbabwe that
had Robert Mugabe as a dictator for
over 30 years. He totally destroyed a
rich nation that was self-sufficient.
Democracy deserves better
given the mandate and resources to fill
the gaps.
The idea is for CP to hire 60 to 80
reporters across the country to do the
bread-and-butter coverage of city halls,
courts and legislatures. The estimated
cost is $8 million to $10 million a year.
A similar concept has been rolled out
in Great Britain by the BBC.
The result? Nothing to date.
8. CBC and cbc.ca: The huge exception,
of course, to Ottawa’s studied
indifference is our national broadcaster.
The Trudeau government has
pledged an additional $675 million over
five years to the CBC.
Parenthetically, just one per cent of
Ottawa’s total funding to the CBC
would pay for more than half the
Toronto Star’s newsroom.
In today’s digital world, the greatest
competitor to Canadian newspaper
websites is cbc.ca. It is an excellent
website, flush with resources and
funded, of course, by the public. Not
only that; it is free. Furthermore, it is
out in the market competing for digital
advertising.
The heritage committee, in its
report, proposed that Canada adopt the
British model where the BBC does not
compete for ads. The rationale is that
the public broadcaster has an obvious
advantage with its guaranteed public
funding.
The result? Idea rejected.
9. Non-profit journalism and philanthropy:
In the U.S., Germany and other
countries, non-profitable journalism
ventures are funded by grants from
foundations.
Under their laws, such grants are
considered charitable donations. This
is how such renowned American
investigative websites as ProPublica
survive. In Britain, the Guardian is
owned by a trust and supported partly
by grants and reader contributions.
Both the Public Policy Forum and
the federal task force on charities
urged the passage of similar legislation
in Canada.
The result? Idea rejected.
10. Investigative journalism support:
To help promote investigative and civic
journalism, the Public Policy Forum
recommended the creation of a legal
advisory service.
Large newspapers, such as the Star,
have in-house counsel who provide
essential legal advice on difficult
investigations or articles. For smaller
publications, these costs can be
prohibitive.
The result? Nothing to date.
In summary, this list speaks for
itself. In fact, there are other more
expensive proposals that are deliberately
not included. Again, most of the
10 above cost nothing, but rather
involved changing the law or practice.
Studied indifference.
I believe this country and its journalism
and democracy deserve better.
If Trudeau were allowed to have free The people of this country need to
reign, this country would also be a wake up and realize that an idiot in
disaster zone in short order. In my power is far more dangerous than a
opinion we are well on our way renegade in power. At least a renegade
already.
is somewhat predictable.
Stettler was showcased while
hosting the 2018 Provincial Masters
Curling Championships Feb. 20-25.
Eight men’s teams and seven women’s
teams from across Alberta
converged on Stettler for the week-long
provincials with up to 200 people per
day participating.
“Everyone left with a sweet taste of
Stettler in their mouth,” said Town of
Stettler Councillor Malcom Fischer
who was the ceremonies chairman and
MC of the event.
“I know there were people here that
never visited Stettler before and they
intend to come back. It gets the town’s
name out.”
Fischer said he talked to all of the
curlers and everyone had positive comments
about everything from the town
and stores to the accommodation.
“I have never run into so many
kudos. The rink looked good. The hall
looked good and the ceremony went
well. It was a great public relations
exercise.”
When Team Armstrong (Red Deer)
competed, with skip Fred Armstrong,
there were more local residents
watching the games, said Fischer.
Armstrong is from Erskine.
Successfully pulling off the event
quiets any naysayers.
“Despite the fact that some people
think Stettler is too small, once again
the people of Stettler showed we can do
almost anything.”
Pulling off the Provincial Masters
took 65 volunteers and months of
planning.
“When you do it well then it looks
like it took no effort at all,” said
Fischer. “It went really smooth.
Everybody did a good job. There were
a lot of people working hard to make
everything work well.”
Fischer praised the work of Stettler
Curling Club President Steve Gerlitz
calling him the head driver for
bringing the provincial championship
to Stettler and the Scotties in 2019.
During the opening ceremonies
Gerlitz was presented with a plague
from the Alberta Curling Federation.
“He ran everything smoothly. His
leadership was instrumental.”
For the women’s division, Team
Foster (Inglewood) defeated Team
Aslyn 8 - 0 to take gold.
In the men’s, Team Pendergast (Red
Deer) defeated Team Greening 5 - 2.
The winners will represent Alberta in
the Nationals in Surrey and White
Rock, B.C. from April 1 - 8.
Stettler will also host the Alberta
Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts from
Red Deer doctors form new society to advocate
for fair healthcare funding for Central Albertans
A group of Red Deer physicians have
formed the non-profit Society for Fair
and Transparent Health Funding to
Central Alberta (the Society).
A year in the making, the Society
was created after a major expansion of
the Red Deer Regional Hospital was
dropped from the provincial priority
list in late 2016 with little explanation
from either Alberta Health Services or
the Government of Alberta.
The Society was created as a result
of public groundswell over close to two
decades of lagging infrastructure
investment in Central Alberta,
according to physicians.
The Society is non-partisan and
does not ascribe to any particular ideology
other than fair and transparent
allocation of tax dollars for health
care.
Local physicians believe this nonprofit
Society is the first of its kind in
Canada, but given the need for infrastructure
in various locations across
the country and often obscure drivers
of development, it may not be the last.
Although physicians have led the
creation of the Society, it will be welcoming
members from the community
to participate on the board and
thereby create a sustainable force.
“Citizens should not have to travel
for medical care when it can be safely
and reasonably delivered close to
home. We want decision-makers to be
fully aware that they are being
watched and that Central Albertans
deserve their tax dollars to be invested
locally based on fair and transparent
processes,” says Dr. Kym Jim, one of
the Society’s founders.
Quote from Dr. Kym Jim:
“Due to a lack of health infrastructure
investment in our region dating
back many years,” said Dr. Kym Jim.
“Red Deer is in dire need of capital
spending to expand the Red Deer
Regional Hospital in order to provide
care to the over 400,000
people who live in Central
Alberta.
“ We don’t blame current
government or Alberta
Health Services leaders for
our current predicament,
but they do have the urgent
obligation to fix it.
“Given the fact that major
hospital development can
often take a decade from
decision to implementation,
we are anxious to hear good
news soon, as we continue to
work with Alberta Health
Services on updating our
most recent expansion plan
created in 2014.”
Objectives of the Society
RCMP received a
complaint of a hit
