Three Curtis
Conductors at the
Acropolis, 1959
A year after becoming music director
of the New York Philharmonic,
LEONARD BERNSTEIN (Conducting ’41)
led the orchestra on a tour through
Europe and Western Asia. Joining him
were his two assistant conductors,
who were also Curtis alumni: THOMAS
SCHIPPERS (Organ ’47), at left, and
SEYMOUR LIPKIN (Piano ’47). The
program for their stop in Greece
contained a mix of old and new:
Beethoven, SAMUEL BARBER
(Composition ’34), Shostakovich,
and Bernstein’s own Symphony No. 2
(“The Age of Anxiety”), in which Mr.
Lipkin was the piano soloist. Here,
the three stand at the foot of the
Acropolis in Athens, taking a moment
to appreciate ancient Greek culture.
This year marks the Leonard Bernstein
centenary. Read about his Curtis
experience on page 20. PHOTO: CURTIS
