2 Comet Courier 03-02-18 Ford named Comet of Month Barabas honored for cooperation; Turner is top athlete The OHS Student Recognition Committee has chosen Jenna Ford to be the March Student of the Month. Ford, a senior, is active in cheerleading, a member of both the fall and winter squads. She is also a member of Student Council. Ford is a supporter of all things Comets and can be seen at many events throughout the year. Sophomore Maecii Barabas is the winner of the Character Trait Award. This month’s award was for Cooperation. Jenna Ford Senior Shaelyn Turner was named the Athlete of the Month for her contributions to the basketball Maecii Barabas Shaelyn Turner Black named March staff member of month Mr. Craig Black was chosen as the Staff Member of the Month for March. Black is the P.E. teacher. He also is the head coach of boys basketball and the assistant volleyball coach. This is Black’s sixth year at OHS. “He has done a lot getting the PLT4M program up and running and emphasizing the fitness value of P.E.,” said Mr. Ryan Mc- Farland. Black has had a very successful season coaching bringing and softball teams. Turner was a starter for the two-time Vermilion County champion basketball teams and has been a starter since her freshman year for the softball team. home Vermilion Valley Conference and Vermilion County titles in both of his sports this year. “Coach Black does a great job of relating with his student-athletes and keeping them motivated both as a coach and a teacher,” Athletic Director Austin Wenger said. “He takes pride in what he does and continues to look for ways to improve as a teacher and a coach.” Mr. Black poses with the honorary ‘O’ after being named March Staff Member of the Month. 3 Seniors to play faculty in basketball for fundraiser If you are looking for an evening of food and entertainment at a reasonable price and want to back your Comets Baseball program, then you will want to be at OHS on March 9. Blue Line BBQ will serve dinner from 5 to 7 p,m. Baseball players will be pre-selling tickets starting February 26 or meals can be purchased at the door. Carry outs are available. At 6:30 p.m. the gym doors open for the second annual Senior/Faculty basketball game as Comet Courier 03-02-18 Unit 76 faculty go head to head with this year’s senior class. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tip-off is at 7. Admission for the game is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Tickets for the game will only be sold at the door. All proceeds from the supper and basketball game go toward providing equipment for the baseball team. Baseball team members will also be selling 50/50 raffle tickets in advance as well as at the door. The 50/50 raffle winner does not have to be present that night to win. Counseling calendar Many scholarships are due in the upcoming weeks. Seniors should check their Scholarship Info spreadsheet for updated information. Pre-registration class presentations were completed last week. Individual meetings with each student began this week and continue through the year. Course requests for next year will be able to be viewed on the TeacherEase portal later this spring. March 8 – A rep from Blackburn College will be available to meet with juniors and seniors interested in Blackburn. March 14 – College Express Applications are due March 16 – AP Exam money due March 19 – DACC placement testing for college express or dual credit classes. April 10 – Juniors will take the SAT exam District launches new website The Oakwood school district has launched a new website that is easier to access on mobile devices. The website also has its own app that you can download to your smart phone. The website can be found at If you scroll down to the bottom of the site, you can find the link to download the app. Freshmen Orientation set for March 12 The Class of 2022 will be the guests of Oakwood High School on March 12 for the annual freshmen orientation. The 8th graders and their parents will be invited to the school to get tours, talk with teachers, learn about class options and gather information about their freshmen year.
