Digital output EL26x2-0010 Relay | Contact-protecting switching of capacitive loads 230 V AC/30 V DC EtherCAT Terminal 132 The EL26x2-0010 relay terminals offer a special technical feature: they delay the external switching pulse, enable in this way a contact-protecting switching of the relay with minimum contact wear, and increase the service life of the relay many times over in many applications. The function of the EL26x2-0010 relay terminals for contact-protecting switching is based on a short delay of the external switching pulse, in order to shift the switching process of the relay as precisely as possible to the next zero-voltage crossing of the supply voltage. This delay is usually less than 10 milliseconds and barely discernible for the user. Users do, however, benefit in several ways: – The service life of the internal relay is increased significantly, since the starting currents are reduced considerably. – The design problem encountered in conventional devices due to the high difference between starting current and continuous current is greatly reduced (see diagram). – LED lamps and required electronic ballasts can be reliably operated, whereas without contact-protecting switching, the starting currents can be 100 times greater than the continuous currents in many cases. – Capacitive loads can generally be switched in this way if an AC supply is used. – The service life of connected devices is also extended, since the resulting lower starting currents cause less stress on lamps, for example. Practical example for determining the extended service life A fully discharged capacitor with 40 μF (without additional series resistor) was used with a 230 V AC supply as a load connected to a channel of the EL2622-0010 relay terminal. This resulted in a constant current of approximately 4 A. Without contact-protecting switching, the starting current would only be limited by parasitic resistances of the lines used and therefore exceed the constant current many times over. – The relays were still fully functional after 200,000 operating cycles per channel when the test was terminated.
