EDITOR’S NOTE Many California homeowners shuddered when Congress threatened to eliminate SALT (State and Local Taxes) deductions on federal taxes. The move was widely criticized as the GOP’s punishment for blue states that vote Democratic, and the plan was later revised to cap SALT deductions at $10,000 instead of completely eradicating them. For affl uent communities like Pasadena, that’s small comfort — with the area’s relentlessly rising housing prices, SALT for many homeowners easily spill over the $10,000 cap. And the big dent in that government incentive for homeownership is indeed expected to bring down property values. But as Kathleen Kelleher reports, the losses may not be as bad as feared — the Pasadena area is still so desirable that prices will continue to rise here, just not as much. Bettijane Levine gives you a quick snapshot of Arroyoland’s current housing market, with examples of homes at several price points — $500,000, $1 million and $5 million. An interesting note: Not terribly long ago, you could buy a Pasadena house for 500 thou, and while half a million dollars may still sound like a lot of money, in 2018, it probably won’t buy you a house that doesn’t need a lot of work; that’s condo territory. Water-hungry lawns aren’t as popular as they were in Pasadena’s salad days, what with climate change and persistent droughts. But diehard fans of grass who don’t want to give up their lawn might want to heed the advice of the Rose Bowl’s tireless turf team, who’ve been nurturing the emerald-green fi eld for many years, as Brenda Rees explains on page 19. —Irene Lacher EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Irene Lacher ART DIRECTOR Stephanie Torres ASSISTANT ART DIRECTOR Richard Garcia PRODUCTION DESIGNERS Rochelle Bassarear, Joseph Sanchez EDITOR-AT-LARGE Bettijane Levine COPY EDITOR John Seeley CONTRIBUTORS Denise Abbott, Leslie Bilderback, Léon Bing, Martin Booe, Michael Cervin, Scarlet Cheng, Richard Cunningham, Kathleen Kelleher, Brenda Rees, John Sollenberger, Nancy Spiller ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Dina Stegon ACCOUNT EXECUTIVES Brenda Clarke, Leslie Lamm ADVERTORIAL CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Bruce Haring HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER Andrea Baker PAYROLL Linda Lam CONTROLLER Kacie Cobian ACCOUNTING Alysia Chavez, Perla Castillo, Yiyang Wang OFFICE MANAGER Ann Turrietta PUBLISHER Jon Guynn arroyo FINE LIVING IN THE GREATER PASADENA AREA SOUTHLAND PUBLISHING V.P.
