another hundred angels make it wear a raiment of zeal and strength and sixty other angels raise the curtain and barrier from before it eyes. As soon as all the barriers are raised, it sees all the fathers and grandfathers of all the passed Believers since Hadrat ’Âdam, and also the torment prepared for some of them. When it sees these states and facts concerning those people, it cries, wails, and shudders, so that people who do not know the inner essence of the matter construe its convulsions as agonies of death. When angels charged with taking out its soul come and see it crowned with and clad in shafâ’at and with the curtains before its eyes raised and yet they are unable to take its soul out, they say unto it: “Yâ Ma’sûm! The Khallâq-i-’âlam (Creator of all beings) sends His salâm to you (greets you and offers His best wishes to you), says to you: I created it, and let it come back to Me. For, I gave it its soul for safekeeping, and let it return it to Me. And let Me give it Paradise and dîdâr (seeing Me) in return for it. If you do not believe us turn your face towards heavens, so that you will see (for yourself).” Thereupon the cihld looks and sees the angels and the Beauty (Jemâl) of Allâhu ta’âlâ. It trembles, foams at the mouth, and reddens with joy. So great is its rejoicing that it is about to jump and rush forward to give its soul away, when, somehow, it catches sight of its forefathers in torment, and it refuses to surrender its soul. “Yâ ma’sûm,” say the angels! “Why don’t you surrender your soul?” The child says: “O angels! Request of Allâhu ta’âlâ on my behalf to forgive my relatives and ancestors.” The angels say: “Yâ Rabbî! You know what we are having with this innocent child.” Thereupon Hadrat Allah ‘jalla shânuhu’ addresses to them: “For the right of My ’Iz (Power, Glory), I have forgiven them.” Then the angels turn to the child and say: “Yâ ma’sûm! Glad tidings to you! Allâhu ta’âlâ has forgiven the ones who had îmân and accepted all your requests.” As the child rejoices in the grand glad tidings, Haqq ta’âlâ sends unto it two houris from Paradise. Disguised in its parents, they appear to it, open their arms, and say: “O our son, or daughter! Come along with us! We cannot do without you in Paradise.” They hand an apple that they brought from Paradise to the child and say, “Here, take it.” As the child smells the apple, Hadrat Azrâîl ‘alaihissalâm’ (Angel of death) becomes an innocent child as lovely as it and takes its life [soul] out instantly. According to another narration, as the child smells the apple, its soul sticks on the apple and the Angel of death takes the child’s life from the apple. Both narrations are permissible. – 262 –

Thereafter the Angel of death takes the soul to Paradise, the soul watching the heavens on the way. There is a vast open country made of green chrysolite there. When they get there the child asks: “Why have you brought me here?” The angels explain: “Yâ ma’sûm! There the place of Rising. It is very hot there. This vast country contains seventy thousand fountainheads of mercy. Stand by Hadrat Rasûl-i-ekrem’s ‘’alaihis-salâm’ blessed pond and see the glasses of nûr! When your parents come to the place of Rising, you fill these glasses with water and give them, and hold them here and do not let them go, lest they should go towards Hell and subjected to torment and reprehension. For, the prayers you say are acceptable in the view of Haqq ta’âlâ. And on Friday nights (nights between Thursdays and Fridays) go down to earth. When you go there take Allâhu ta’âlâ’s salâm to the Ummat-i- Muhammad ‘sall-Allâhu ta’âlâ ’alaihi wa sallam’. And sprinkle nûr unto them and take the berât of their gratitude to Allâhu ta’âlâ.” After making the child’s soul tour these grades, they hurriedly bring it back and place it at the head side of the dead child. Throughout the procedures such as performance of the namâz of janâza, interment of the corpse, and questioning in the grave, the soul stays over the grave. If its parents die without îmân, there will be a curtain between the parents and the child. The child does not look for them or meet them anywhere, so that they long to see one another. These are the facts about Muslims’ children who die before reaching the age of puberty. CONCERNING MUSLIM WOMEN’S DEATH If a woman dies from lochia or pregnancy or plague or internal suffering or, without any of these causes, dies of a natural death as she leads a life wherein she never shows herself to men nâ-mahram to her without properly covering her body, (i.e. in a way taught by Islam,) and wherein her husband is pleased with her, at the time of her death angels of Paradise come and make lines before her and make salâm to her with reverential respect, saying unto her: “O you, beloved and martyred maiden of Allâhu ta’âlâ! Come on out, what are you doing in this worldly palace? Allâhu ta’âlâ is pleased with you and He has forgiven you your sin at the pretext of your illness and has granted you His Paradise. Come on and surrender your safekeeping!” When that woman sees the high rank she is going to attain she wants to surrender her soul. However, she looks around herself and says: “Let Allâhu ta’âlâ judge my friends in the – 263 –
