immediately learn the six tenets of îmân (belief) and thereafter to learn the Ahkâm-i-islâmiyya, i.e. the farzes, the halâls and the harâms, and to lead a life in keeping with these rules and principles. A girl becomes ’âqil and bâligh when she becomes nine years old, and a boy becomes so at the age of twelve. It becomes farz for them to learn these tenets, rules and principles by asking their parents, kith and kin, and acquaintances. Likewise, a disbeliever who has converted to Islam to immediately go to a man of religion, to a muftî, and acquire these teachings from them, who in turn will have to teach that person, either directly or by giving him or her a true Islamic book as a present. It is farz for both parties to do their part, i.e. for the new Muslim to learn, and for the requested person to help them learn. If the latter party merely says, “Very good, very good,” and does not help them by teaching them or by giving them true Islamic books, they will have disobeyed the (commandment called) farz. A person who disobeys a farz shall be tormented in Hell fire. Once the former party starts searching for the man of religion or the religious book, it will be an ’udhr for them not to learn those teachings until they find the source of the teachings. (An ’udhr is something, e.g. an excuse, which absolves a Muslim from having to do an Islamic commandment or from having to avoid an Islamic prohibition. As these commandments and prohibitions have been dictated by Islam, likewise ’udhrs for all Islamic commandments and prohibitions have, again, been prescribed by Islam. As the source for learning Islamic commandments and prohibitions is the books written by scholars of Ahl as-sunnat, likewise ’udhrs can be learned only from scholars of Ahl as-sunnat or from their books. For the purpose of letting the younger generations hear about the true Islamic teachings we have read and thereby serving the people all the world over so that they should attain comfort and peace in the world and endless bliss in the Hereafter, we shall, inshâ-Allah, carry on with our business of publishing selections and valuable writings from books written by scholars of Ahl assunnat. The following prayer, called Salât-an-tunjînâ, should be recited for attaining wishes: “Allâhumma salli ’alâ sayyidinâ Muhammadin wa ’alâ âl-i-sayyidinâ Muhammadin salât-an-tunjînâ bihâ min jamî’ul ahwâl-i-wa-l-âfât wa taqdî lenâ bihâ jamî’al hâjât – 286 –

wa tutahhirunâ wa tubellighunâ bihâ min jamî’ is-seyyiât wa terfe’unâ bihâ a’l-ad-derejât wa tubellighunâ bihâ aqsa-l-ghâyât min jamî’il khayrât-i-fi-l-hayât-i-wa ba’d-al-memât.” It is stated in hadîth-i-sherîfs that it is very useful to recite the prayer of Istighfâr for protection against all sorts of trouble and danger and for escaping harms and attacks of devils and enemies. My life came and went by like a wind passing. To me it is nothing but an eye twinkling. Haqq bears witness: Body is soul’s dwelling. One day it will fly off its cage, a birdling. HUNDRED and TWENTY-THIRD LETTER This letter of Hadrat Imâm Rabbânî’s ‘quddisa sirruh’ was written for Tâhir-i-Bedahshî. It states that an act of nâfila worship, be it a hajj, will be good for nothing if it causes an act of farz worship to be missed: My wise brother. The valuable letter sent by Molla Tâhir, who is as cleanly as his name, has arrived here. My brother! It is stated in a hadîth-i-sherîf: “Allâhu ta’âlâ’s disliking a slave of His will be known from that slave’s sparing time for frivolities.” To perform an act of nâfila worship instead of performing an act that is farz means to work in vain. Therefore, we should study what we are spending our time with. We should know what we are busy with. Are we doing nâfila worship or farz worship? A number of prohibitions, harâms are being committed for performing a nâfila hajj. You should think well! A mere signal will do with a wise person. I send my salâm to you and to your friends. [It is understood from this letter as well that the sunnats of four of the five daily namâzes, with the exception of the sunnat of morning namâz, should be performed with the niyyat (intention) of (making) qadâ.] HUNDRED and TWENTY-FOURTH LETTER This letter, again, was written for Tâhir-i-Bedahshî. The wujûb (being wâjib) of hajj is conditional on possessing travel funds. To go on a hajj without having money to spend for the journey means to waste time despite other duties.
