Mission Possible A Quarterly Community Relations Report WINTER 2017 Since our beginnings in 1961, Mission Fed has been dedicated to strengthening and improving the communities in which we live, work and play. Through partnerships with schools and over 200 nonprofit organizations directly committed to a healthier, stronger, vibrant and resilient San Diego County, we’re on a mission to ensure that San Diego’s success is our bottom line. We hope you take pride in reading about this past year’s achievements and learn more about how we came together to drive positive transformation throughout the San Diego community. Our Commitment to Ethical Practices We can all share in the good news that on November 28, Mission Fed received the 2017 BBB Torch Award for Ethics, category 500+ employees, from the Better Business Bureau of San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties. This award recognizes Mission Fed for its commitment to operate in an ethical manner and its strong commitment to integrity, customer service and community involvement. The BBB Torch Award reinforces Mission Fed’s reputation as an organization that is committed to serving our membership and giving back to the local community using ethical business practices. Mission Fed’s President and CEO Debra Schwartz accepted the BBB Torch Award on behalf of our members, community partners, employees and volunteer Board of Directors. Mission Fed continues to demonstrate service excellence every day through our people, products and support of the local community. Fighting Food Insecurity throughout San Diego Throughout the month of September, Mission Fed was proud to support the fight against childhood hunger by partnering with ABC 10 and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank on their Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. This program provides weekend backpacks of food to over 1,900 elementary school students living in poverty who receive free meals at school, but face hunger at home over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable. In collaboration with our radio and television media partners and with the support of our members, staff and online donations, our donation totaled $21,204 and will provide 4,241 food-filled backpacks to hungry children and their families. Inspiring Leadership and Philanthropy In November, Junior Achievement (JA) of San Diego County held its 29th Annual San Diego Business Hall of Fame at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The Gala supports JA’s mission to impact 81,500 students each year by teaching them how to apply for a job, start a business and manage their money. The event also served as a celebration of the best in business through philanthropy and inducted the 2017 Lifetime Laureates into the Junior Achievement of San Diego Business Hall of Fame. Mission Fed has served as a partner of JA for over a decade. We’re proud that our financial support, especially of McGrath Family JA BizTown and Mission Fed JA Finance Park, prepares San Diego students for career and financial success. JA Student Ambassadors hosted the Gala and greeted the guests, sharing their stories on how JA has impacted their lives.
