MARCH 2018
A Letter from the Rector
Dear Friends,
This Lent we have three Lent groups running across the week following the “Live
Lent: Let Your Light Shine!” - the Church of England’s Lent Course. During the
five weeks we are exploring John’s Gospel, and are reminded that God’s rescue
mission is to bring us from darkness to light. This is the work of Jesus - the light
of the world - the Saviour of the world. Jesus said, “I came that they may have
life and have it abundantly. I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays
down his life for the sheep” (John 10:10-11). The greatest gift that Jesus offers
is life. The life he brings is generous and joyful, it is liberating and purposeful. It
is a life lived to the full and overflows to bring life to others. Jesus, himself turns
to his followers and says, “You are the light of the world….so let your light
shine”. To witness is to let your light shine. A light shines out into the darkness.
We have been brought into his light, now he appoints us to bring his light to
others. This is what witness is.
As we journey through Lent, a time of personal reflection and self examination,
the course is encouraging us to explore what the gift of Jesus and the challenge
of Jesus means for us today as we live our daily lives. As Jesus said, “I came that
they may have life and have it abundantly”. Each session ends with a list of
individual challenges that we can choose from. The list includes challenges such
as consciously making space for somebody this week, praying for all those who
today are waiting for help or healing or take time to get to know somebody
better. In responding to the challenge we can let our light shine in our everyday
lives so it reaches those around us. The challenge encourages us to take hold of
God’s gift of life and live it - to the full. God offers us this life for the sake of
others. The light he gives us in Jesus Christ is not to be hidden, but to shine - it’s
a gift to be lived and shared.
God bless
Rev Steve
MARCH 2018
A Letter from the Bishop
Dear Friends,
The words ‘How can this be?’ seem to me to be hovering in the air a great deal
at the moment.
‘How can this be’ that we are so close to the date of leaving the EU and we don’t
know precisely what is happening yet? ‘How can this be’ that I’ve paid my stamp
all these years and all I hear about is hospitals and schools under huge stress?
‘How can this be’ that every year the trees seem to burst into bud a few days
earlier than they did last year, but that many people cannot accept the evidence
that says that this is as a result of human impact on the climate?
These and so many other versions of the question buzz around in my mind and
heart – as do the very prosaic ones of human living that in different ways we
each face – and in my case: ‘How can this be’ that my parents, who have been
reasonably well physically to this point, suddenly seem now to be failing so
rapidly?
‘How can this be?’
These are big questions and real questions. They affect different parts of our
lives. They require us to draw on deep sources of strength. They can depress us
or energise us. They can encourage us to reach out to others for support, and
they can also make us want to hide and to turn in on ourselves. And where is God
in it all?
I don’t underestimate the impact of these words and of their underlying and
related questions.
However, as the words and questions gather, in the month of March at least I am
comforted by the fact that as the 25th approaches, I can draw strength from the
example of one amazing woman who has trodden the human path before us. The
25th of March is the Feast of the Annunciation, which is the day on which Mary
was told the news that she would bear a child who would be Son of God – and not
surprisingly, she exclaimed ‘How can this be?’ (Luke 1.34)
If Mary asked this question, then I think I am in good company if, on occasion, I
ask it myself as well.
‘How can this be?’
And once it had been explained to Mary that if she said ‘yes’, she was to enact
God’s will, then Mary did indeed summon her strength and courage and love and
obedience, and having expressed her incredulity, proceeded to bring about God’s
purpose for her and for the world. She could have said ‘no’. However, she said
‘let it be so’, and thus a new chapter opened in the life of God’s creation.
…..continued on page 6
…..continued from page 5
MARCH 2018
Can I echo Mary’s words? Can we?
Can we, having faced the questions, place our trust in God and respond with
similar strength, courage, love and obedience? Can we draw strength from Mary’s
example?
It is my firm conviction that we can!
With every prayer and blessing, then, for March and for the Feast of the
Annunciation,
And for the coming joy of Easter,
Bishop Nicholas
P.S. – And thank you to everyone who accepted my invitation to share thoughts
about Christmas. I received some wonderful contributions from across the
diocese that I continue to treasure.
MARCH 2018
Warning! Family history research makes for more prayer!
‘I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois
and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.’ 2 Timothy ch1
vs5 (NIV)
I was really struck by this verse when I came across it in my daily readings this week. I
am no theologian so can’t interpret this verse with any great wisdom or learning.
However, it did get me wondering about what I may have inherited from my forebears.
Am I a Christian in part because of the prayers of my mother, grandmother, or other
family members who have gone before? Maybe.
I visited St Thomas’ Church at the end of January because my great, great grandfather
was rector of your parish 1880-91. Those of you who enjoy tracing their family trees and
watching Who Do You Think You Are will immediately understand the attraction of not
only finding the names of your ancestors, but also visiting the places where they lived.
It’s so interesting and moving to stand in the very spot they must have stood. When The
Rev Hely Smith, his wife Harriet and family came to Market Rasen, it was after much of
the restoration and alteration work described in your church guide had been done. So
as I stood in the chancel, I very much felt that Hely would have still recognised your
church and that was pretty special for me.
Rev’d Hely Smith (top)
and his wife Harriet.
What might I have inherited from Hely and Harriet? I knew about the
artistic gene that has meandered down through the generations and
found its way to me. Of their three children, their son was the one
who trained as an artist - in Lincoln. (Hely Augustus Morton Smith -
Google him and you’ll find examples of his work in public
collections.) Their second daughter was my great grandmother
Ethel. Her son was my grandfather, the Scottish sculptor C d’O
Pilkington Jackson (best known for the statue of Robert the Bruce
at Bannockburn). However, this week I have been wondering what
might be my spiritual inheritance from Hely and Harriet. I have
realised that there must have been a history of prayer in my family.
Surely Hely and Harriet as vicar and wife prayed for Ethel, that she
would be strong in faith. (She certainly needed to be, widowed in
1889 aged 30.) I know my grandfather was taken to church
regularly, so I imagine Ethel prayed for her son. Her daughter-inlaw,
my grandmother Eve, was definitely a woman of prayer. My
father had a living faith as did my mother. I suspect I’ve been
prayed for a lot - maybe before I was even born. That makes me
feel humble.
Which leads me back to 2 Timothy. I don’t have children, but I
choose to persevere in prayer for my family, especially my nephews
and nieces. My hope is that the thread of faith will carry on down
the generations. Why not join me and pray afresh for your children,
grandchildren, great grand children and even for those generations
yet to be born?
Kirsty Jackson
A special thanks to Chris Middleton for showing me and my cousin around and for
making us feel so welcome. He was very generous with his time.
The Vestry……..an update
As part of the planned development and improvement of St Thomas’, the Vestry
is going to be completely refurbished. Current plans include pointing of the
outside stone work, repair work to the plaster and redecoration. New storage
cupboards for the Vestments will be fitted along with a new sink unit and more
storage cupboards and shelves. The level of the floor will also be raised to
enable access from outside as it is planned to further develop the Vestry into a
Parish Office to support the mission and ministry of our Church. It is envisaged
that the Parish Office will be open for part of the week. Further details and plans
will be in the forthcoming magazine but it is hoped to complete this work during
2018. If you have any ideas then please do speak to Rev Steve, Rev Claire, the
We had a chance to smell frankincense,
make our own tealight holders, decorate
star-shaped biscuits and find out how many
people can fit on a camel as we learned
about the wise men’s journey to visit the
baby Jesus.
Later we thanked God for our favourite
gifts and prayed about what we would like
to give to Jesus before writing these on
hearts and placing them in the crib.
Finally we topped off the afternoon with a
lovely party buffet fit for royalty!
We’re all looking forward to our next Messy
Church which will be on Sunday 18 th March
at 4.15pm and hope to see you there!
Rev Claire
If you are able to donate a small Easter Egg for our annual Easter
Family Service Egg Hunt (Saturday 31st March) we would be very
grateful. Each year our numbers are growing for this event and your
support is very much appreciated. Please could you give the donated
eggs to either Liz Johnson, Sheila Lamming or Marcus Hyde.
Many thanks.
Mini Messy Church
We have had a very busy month yet again at Mini Messy Church. We
reached our highest figure of 29 children – and were so pleased to see
everyone together! Mini Messy Church has grown considerably over the past
months and this is very encouraging.
The children and their parents
have had lots of fun learning
about a miraculous haul of fish
that the disciples caught after
meeting Jesus on the sea shore.
Fish for breakfast with Jesus
and the disciples might have
b e e n t h e t h e m e f o r t h a t
particular week’s session, but
we enjoyed our toast and fresh
fruit together instead! Wonderful
designs and colours were put
onto fish templates to take home
and share with other members
of their families.
We have also learnt about a
lady who poured perfume on the
feet of Jesus and how special
we all are to God. Particular fun
was had decorating gingerbread
biscuits to look like ourselves.
Needless to say none of these
lasted till our short worship session at the end of the morning!
Everyone is always welcome to join us each week.
Westminster Abbey - ‘Faith at the heart of the nation’
On Saturday 17 th February, we entered Westminster Abbey using the Parish
Pass. This enabled us to gain free entry to this wonderful building which is
steeped in British history. [The Parish Pass is valid for up to 4 adults and 2
children]
On entry, we were given audio guides which gave a comprehensive tour of the
Abbey, narrated by Jeremy Irons. This was presented on a ‘smart’ device, and
included maps, videos and interviews with some of the Abbey staff. We learnt
such a lot about the history of our monarchy and the many important figures that
are buried or commemorated there.
On the hour, visitors are asked to pause for a brief moment of prayer and to
remember that, among the hustle and bustle, the Abbey is, first and foremost, a
place of worship.
Westminster Abbey is so vast with several side chapels that we spent almost 3
hours there. There was so much to see that we could have easily spent longer if
time had allowed. We really enjoyed our visit and would encourage anyone else
planning a trip to London to take the Parish Pass with them!
We advise that you check opening times on the Westminster Abbey website
(www.westminster-abbey.org) for the date you intend to visit, as public opening
times vary due to certain events. E.g. on the day we went, the Abbey was only
open to visitors from 9am to 1pm.
Roger and Julia Pullen
GOING TO LONDON?
Westminster Abbey has kindly given
St Thomas’ Church a Parish Pass for 2018.
The pass admits up to 4 adults/students or
children 6-16 years free of charge.
(Children up to the age of 5 are admitted
free to the abbey if accompanied by an
adult). To use the Parish Pass, at least one
of the adults must be on the Electoral Roll
of St Thomas’ Church, Market Rasen. The
pass may be used on six separate occasions
by the Parish during 2018.
MARCH 2018
Market Rasen Primary School
Welcome to our Spring contribution to the church newsletter. Our children have
recently enjoyed their half term holiday and have been participating in WOW days to
celebrate their new topics. Year One and Two are focusing on the circus this term and
enjoyed coming to school dressed as circus performers and participating in lots of
circus activities, including juggling and spinning plates. Year Five and Six are beginning
their art focused topic and Year Three and Four continue with their Young
Entrepreneurs topic where they have been writing to lots of chefs and businesses to
help with tips to running their own cafes at the end of the term.
We are busy planning our Mothers’ Day and Easter services and we are looking forward
to visiting St. Thomas’ Church to perform to our parents. We are also going to be
involved in safety week, where we will look at water, fire and internet safety across
the year groups.
We have recently refurbished our dining hall into a new, fantastic library. Holly and
Esme have enjoyed the opportunity to read a variety of unique stories. They feel that
the books will help our children improve their reading and writing skills. A group of our
older children enjoy the role of librarians and children are encouraged to use the
library at lunch times. Classes also visit the library and continue to visit Market Rasen
Library to enjoy a reading session linked to their current topic.
We will be celebrating World Book Day at the beginning of March where we always
enjoy dressing up as our favourite book characters and participating in lots of exciting
activities throughout the day. We always look forward to the outfits our children and
their parents create to celebrate World Book Day. We will also be holding a book fair
at school to help raise funds to purchase additional books for our school library.
We have lots of sports competitions planned, including a Year Three / Four multi skills
event. We enjoyed participating in a recent swimming competition and a group of Key
Stage Two children worked hard with Mr Toothill to rehearse a dance routine to
perform at a dance competition in Skegness. The children were a credit to us and
were awarded a values trophy for their contribution to the event and support for other
groups who were participating.
As ever, our term is a busy one with Year Three and Four children looking forward to
their residential visit to Rand Farm Park this term and lots of trips and visitors planned
for the other year groups. Our children continue to enjoy their cooking in the
curriculum lessons with Mrs Barnes and we are continuing to run lots of after school
clubs, including working with a local golf coach and dance school teacher. We are
looking forward to sharing more of our exciting curriculum activities with you in future
issues.
If you would like any further information or to discuss anything with us, please phone
the School Office on 01673 842395 or visit our website at
Emmaus
A good time was had by all when our Emmaus group met up for a meal at
The Olive in Market Rasen on the 9 th of February. The food was delicious and
plentiful, and the conversation flowed as we enjoyed catching up with one
another’s news and had an
opportunity to wish Zeph and Dave
Lawes well as they prepared to relocate
to Winchester.
It really is great to have the
chance to spend time together
like this and we’re always happy
to welcome new members so if
you’re aged 30-50 and would like
to join us do look out for the date
