About
Images in this book were produced using a digital camera modified to record radiation in the ultraviolet and
infrared as well as visible light. By placing filters in front of the lens different parts of the electromagnetic
spectrum may be selected.
This book is part of a series of three books produced during an open-door residency at Allenheads Contemporary
Arts, (ACA). This involved being part of a group of artists, curators and scientists using the word BEYOND as an
open ended starting point for discussion, research, and creation of new work. Many artists drew inspiration from
the newly installed North Pennine Observatory at ACA and considered distant worlds. I have drawn inspiration
from animals that can perceive aspects of our world that are hidden beyond our own senses. In this book I have
explored around ACA mainly using UV, but also in some cases IR and different combinations of visible UV and IR.
Technical information
Photographs taken with Nikon D3200 full spectrum converted camera (supplied by uvircameras (see eBay shop).
Filters (supplied by uviroptics ‒ see eBay shop) as follows: UV photographs: (recognizable by the muted
appearance with predominance of grey yellow and blue) Schott BG40 2mm plus Schott UG1 2mm. Visible
photographs - BG40 2mm. IR photographs: Hoya R-720 2 mm. Lens: Photax 35mm f/3.5 preset aperture - For
indoor flower shots usually used short extension tube. All images in natural sunlight. Images acquired in RAW
format and processed in Adobe Lightroom (and Photoshop in some cases)
