OUR story or OUR NEIGHBORS’ story, or that of a CHILD, a STUDENT, or an IMMIGRANT. Stories can impact the heart and we hope our Representatives have a heart. As Social Action Coordinator for the South District UMW, I encourage all of you to became active by making your voice for Justice in Texas heard. To help do this with good information regarding whatever bills are submitted to the Texas Legislature in 2018, sign up with TEXAS IMPACT and receive their emails with key information about various bills. And, WATCH their podcast every Monday at NOON via facebook. They actually film this live podcast in the UMC across from the Capitol. For more information on this subject, see my recent Social Action S. D. email. Yours, Julie Fuschak, South District Social Action Coordinator B Y S U S A N S M I T H “When my Mom needed me to do a favor for the UMW group or church, she would start our conversations with "Can you hear the voice of God speaking to you?" THAT'S how I joined the church choir, became the church pianist, was voted in as UMW Treasurer, became a District UMW Officer, and continue as Administrator of the Board at my local church. inherited the Presidency of St. Paul United Methodist Women, in Temple, 7 years ago when my Mom passed away. Yes Mom, I still hear the voice of God talking to me! We have a very small UMW Circle, but that doesn't stop us from serving. The United Methodist Men started eating breakfast while the UMW were having their meeting. Since we couldn't concentrate with the delicious smells coming from the kitchen, we invited ourselves to join the men's breakfast. We continue having joint meetings for breakfast on the first Saturday of every month. In August, we invite our neighboring school's (Scott Elementary) staff over for a Welcome Back Reception. We serve finger foods, chips and dips, and cake. Before we serve the cake, we present them with the school supplies that we collect plus a check for them to use at their discretion This year we are working with our Nurturing Committee to minister more to our shut-in and nursing home members. We make goodie bags for special occasions and follow up with phone calls, visits, and by mailing cards. I'm so very proud of what we can accomplish with our small hands and huge hearts! When you listen to the Lord speak....it's easier to serve. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. " 1 Corinthians 15:58

“ M Y N E W L I N E O F C L O T H I N G A N D A C C E S S O R I E S : D E S I G N E R – G O D ” It is a Wonderful thing that Our District is able, through the kind giving of Women of God to provide scholarships. I was a recipient of a scholarship for the Legislative Event through our South District Leadership. I was BLESSED to be a part and learned many things about immigration, about Justice for Our Neighbors (a United Methodist Organization). I heard testimonies of lives changed by the Love Our Methodist church extends to ALL. Above all, my resolve for and Love of United Methodist Women and their work was Strengthened and Renewed. What I saw was a group of women, dedicated to learning truths about our laws, about truth in the treatment of strangers, and about ways to take action to resolve it. I saw women (and a few men) coming together to enforce change. This reminded me of a time I served as Membership, Nature and Outreach and researched “our history” A very few women, without truly any rights of their own, decided there needed to be a biblical change in society and with God’s help made a difference. Not everyone agreed with each other, but IN LOVE, we all respectfully listened to each other. That was true democracy for me. Thank you again for the opportunity to attend. Thank you to all who give, who serve, who make it possible for South District as a body of women to give. I was truly BLESSED in the receiving and DO INDEED have A VERY GRATEFUL HEART ~ Anne Ridley-Pleasant S. District Leadership Team “ Its 140-year legacy started when the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society first organized in Boston in response to a lack of women’s health in India. Women in the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren traditions organized about the same time in history (1869-1893) when women and children were legally classified as “chattel, legally dead, non-persons.” There was little service to women because of prejudice and limitations of cultural attitudes in the church and in society”
