It was the second consecutive year the team has finished Top 10 in the nation in two categories but this year they pulled off becoming No. 1 and were named the National Hip Hop Champions. “Each year we have the same goal,” Coach Rachel Damlow says, “Advance to finals.” This year, for the second year, they met that goal in two categories – finishing first in hip hop and eighth in jazz. Only one other team in the state of Missouri has earned the title. The West High team has been competing at the championships since 2009, placing in hip hop each year since 2013 until finally earning the No. 1 spot. “This team has worked hard all year long, spending countless hours preparing for this competition,” Damlow said. “Their talent, dedication and commitment to this team certainly paid off!” Francis Howell students grant child’s wish In January, Francis Howell High hosted its first annual Swishes for Wishes Night to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and one special guest had his wish granted – thanks to the charitable efforts of students and the community. The presentation is one more layer in the collaboration between local law enforcement and the school district, and comes in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 students and teachers dead. After the Florida school shooting, DuBray wrote a letter to Fort Zumwalt parents, staff and the community. “Every time one of these situations takes place, we just shake our heads and wonder how this can continue happening,” an excerpt of DuBray’s letter reads. “While we can’t identify a definitive answer, we do See BULLETIN BOARD, page 16 YOUR TEACHER MAY HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE Teacher of the Year O'Fallon Win a New iPad for your teacher Just tell us why your teacher deserves to win Mid Rivers Newsmagazine’s “Teacher of the Year” Excellence In Education Award!
