Maybe you are a student or the parent of a student whose teacher consistently goes the extra mile to make learning meaningful, effective, interesting and enjoyable. If so, you know a teacher who is an ideal candidate for the West Newsmagazine Teacher of the Year award – and we would like to hear from you. Created to recognize excellence in education, the Teacher of the Year award is presented annually to one area teacher who has made a positive difference in the life of a student in the community, young or old. Eligible teachers include preschool, elementary school, high school and college/ university teachers in the West Newsmagazine/West County mailing area. Nominations are open to educators at both public and private schools. Nominating a teacher for the award is easy. Simply explain in 200 or fewer words why you believe a teacher should be recognized as the West County Teacher of the BULLETIN BOARD, from page 18 Academic distinction for area elementary, middle schools Parkway’s Barretts and Bellerive elementary schools and Rockwood’s LaSalle Springs Middle earned recognition as Leader in Me Lighthouse Schools of Academic Distinction. The new Lighthouse School of Academic Distinction recognizes Leader in Me Schools that have met requirements necessary to achieve and maintain Lighthouse School Certification and shown exemplary academic growth or proficiency as measured by state accountability standards. Academic distinction is determined through data analysis by the independent nonprofit schooldigger.com, a website focused on empowering families with reliable data about the performance of their children’s school. The schooldigger.com algorithm scores on a percentile ranking, comparing similar schools across the state. To meet the academic proficiency standard, a school must be at or above the 85th percentile for the state’s combined proficiency standards. To meet the academic growth standard, the school must be at or above the 50th percentile and have shown a five percent growth from the previous year’s percentile ranking. To date, four Rockwood and two Parkway schools have achieved Lighthouse status. Year. Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges representing the Teacher of the Year program sponsors, which in addition to West Newsmagazine include Busey Bank-Ballwin, Dream Play, McDonalds of Town & County and Chesterfield Valley, Schrader Funeral Home-Inc. and Sylvan Learning Center. The winning teacher will receive a new iPad, gift certificates, flowers, a cake and a school celebration as well as recognition in a future issue of West Newsmagazine.
