Streetlight not working in your area? Report it! RECYCLING Reminder that many residents are still placing corrugate boxes or paper goods out for regular landfill disposal and not for recycling. If the recycled material will not fit inside the blue tubs we have been allotted, you can place the material (albeit neatly) directly under or next to the blue bins and Waste Management will still take the material along with what does fit into the tub. As a reminder, glass bottles and soiled pizza boxes should NOT be placed in the recycle bins as they are not accepted. Lots of residents are getting more of more goods from online retailers like Wayfair and Amazon delivered to their homes. The cases such goods are delivered in should always be recycled. ANNUAL WESTCREEK PLANTING EVENT The Westcreek Landscape will be holding their annual planting event in April. Due to the cold weather experienced in January, there are many plants and shrubs within our village that experienced damage and require replacement. Be on the lookout for when exactly in April this will take place - we can use all the help we can possibly get to make our village a prettier place this spring! YARD OF THE MONTH Get ready for the Yard of the Month (YOM) program to start up again, when the first properties chosen for 2018 will be at the end of April. Lots of hard work awaits us all to get our homes back in great shape. Remember, lots of color and great care regarding pruning are always welcome. Good luck! MARCH GARDENING TIPS January was a very tough month on our gardens with the deep freeze we encountered. Many homeowners covered what they could to protect and prevent damage, but still unfortunately it wasn’t enough for many as the temperature dove into the 20’s for too long a period. To recover from this event, be sure to perform the following: • Palms - if the frond is brown and already wilting, remove the damage. If standing upright, then leave the frond in place for now. Queen palms may not take another 30-45 days before you know whether to prune the damage or remove/replace the entire palm. Wait before removing a Queen, it may take some time to show a recovery. • Banana Trees or Philodendrons will likely need pruning down to the root base now to allow for new growth to occur, especially if it has turned “gooey” or mushy. If you don’t do so, fungus will develop, causing other problems once warm weather returns. • Hibiscus, Bougainvillea and Lantana will also need pruning if not covered properly, but will recover as long as the root base appears firmly implanted and not “loose.” • Mexican Heather will need to be pruned down to ground level if brown. Full recovery will be slow as they are not fast-growing. • Most Variegated Ginger was devastated with the cold. Cut back to about 12” tall, removing completely any stalks that appear loose at their base. New shoots should emerge as temperatures rise for any stalks cut back. • If you haven’t already performed annual pruning duty to your crepe myrtles, roses, as well as other types of trees that are typically immune to cold weather, you should do so now, before new spring growth begins to emerge. • Trees - Spring is the perfect time to plant new fruit and ornamental trees. Pear, Peach, Elm Ash, Maple and Magnolias are all great choices that do well in our area. • Live Oak pruning should also be completed by March if possible. Be sure to water adequately as even in the cooler months these trees will pull significant water away from lawn and garden areas. Their constant leafdropping until hot days/nights are back is annoying and unpreventable… Discover the Hidden Gem of Cypress Household Donations Accepted & Appreciated - tax receipts given Our Donation Center is now located at 11302 Huffmeister (in the strip center across Fleur De Lis) Take 20% off one regular priced item.
