| SUNRIDERS UNITE SUNRIDERS UNITE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DISASTER RELIEF Sunrider reaches out to its IBOs and staff in fundraising drives to aid victims of devastating hurricanes. From hurricanes and flooding to earthquakes and landslides, 2017 was hit by a record-breaking number of deadly natural disasters. Among these was Hurricane Harvey, an extremely destructive Atlantic hurricane that became the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 2005. In a four-day period in August 2017, the system meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding, inundating hundreds of thousands of homes, displacing more than 30,000 people, and prompting more than 17,000 rescues. Later in the fall of 2017, the one-two punch of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria hit regions in and across the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico. Irma was the strongest Atlantic basin hurricane ever recorded, and its winds devastated the island nation of Barbuda, damaging 95% of the buildings there. Maria hit the <strong>US</strong> territory of Puerto Rico in the middle of September. It was the first Category 4 hurricane to directly impact the island in 85 years, and its damage was sprawling. In the immediate aftermath, nearly all of Puerto Rico's two million citizens were without power. To date, many of them are still in need of basic supplies and amenities. In response to these disasters, Sunrider organized two fundraising campaigns spearheaded by Dr. Tei-Fu and Dr. Oi-Lin Chen, pledging to match donations contributed by its staff and IBOs in the U.S. and Canada. The combined amount for the two campaigns totaled more than $50,000. Much of this amount was given to Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization whose work has earned wide recognition from independent charity evaluators, including a 100% fundraising efficiency rating from Forbes. 08 | SUNWRITER SPRING 2018
