The Book of Tells (Peter Collett)[unlocked]

THE BOOK OF TELLS Tony

THE BOOK OF TELLS Tony Blair was having trouble persuading Labour members that it would be necessary for Britain to support the United States if it decided to go to war against Iraq, and it was thought that Bill Clinton would be able to bring the doubters into line behind Blair. The speech was vintage Clinton - he flattered the delegates, exposed both sides of the argument and showed that he was fallible. But more importantly, he interspersed his remarks with Clintonian tells - that upward-looking smile, the magisterial wave, the carefully timed hesitations to remind everyone that politics was about making tough decisions. When he said that war is indiscriminate - 'I do not care how precise your bombs and your weapons are, when you set them off innocent people will die' - he did his trademark lip-bite tell, reminding the gathering that he was a man of feeling. At the end of the speech there was thunderous applause. When conference members were interviewed on TV afterwards, they were all ecstatic - MPs of every political hue said that Clinton was on their side. There was of course no mention of the various oratorical devices that he'd used, even though it was these devices that had electrified the conference, rather than anything Clinton had said. The delegates thought they were responding to his arguments, but they weren't. They were reacting to the tells that he had produced, those little signals that he'd marshalled to show that he was thoughtful and sensitive, a man of political conviction with strong emotions. It was the tellsthe medium, not the message - that had won the day. In Chapter 1 we saw that the word tell comes from poker, where it is used to describe any action or speech mannerism that reveals what kind of hand someone is holding or what kind of strategy they're using. The ensuing 354

TELL-TALES chapters have shown that the notion of tells isn't exclusive to the game of poker, and that it can profitably be applied to a wide range of everyday pursuits. Poker is like life in some respects, and different in others. Part of the similarity lies in the fact that we need to conceal our thoughts, feelings and intentions from others, just as poker players need to keep their hand and their motives hidden. The other similarity lies in individuals' attempts to understand each other, and to use their observations as a guide to what the other person is thinking. When you're playing poker there are two sources of information about the kind of hand another player is holding - one is the cards you're holding, and the other is the way he or she is behaving. The trouble with the latter is that there's no way of knowing whether the inferences you draw about the other person's hand are based on what he or she is failing to conceal, or what they are doing in order to deceive you. In many respects, life's the same - it's not always clear whether the conclusions we draw about other people are based on actions that they can't control or actions that they've deliberately produced in order to mislead us. In poker this conundrum is solved by comparing the various hands that a player has with the way that he or she behaves during each round. Although life isn't neatly parcelled into discrete deals, it's still possible to link individuals' circumstances to the way they behave, and in this way to identify their tells. When you're playing poker with someone for the first time there's no way of knowing what their tells are - the only thing you can do is assume that the common tells apply to them as much as they do to anyone else. After watching another player for several rounds, it should be 355
