EVENT PREVIEW WEX Global 2018 is coming back after two years WEX Global 2018 will be back this year in Lisbon with its personalised exchanges between delegates in the fields of water and energy. Keep your calendars free on March 13 and 14. After a gap of two years, WEX Global 2018 is coming back to Lisbon. It will be packed with meetings, presentations and networking just like other events, but with a difference: it will be personalised for you. Once again, pre-selected meetings will form the centrepiece of WEX Global, unlike the gatherings where power point presentations take precedence. WEX organisers send a complete list of attendees to delegates before the event and enable them to prioritise their choice of one-to-one meetings and seminars. A customized schedule is given to every delegate on registering at the event. The meetings typically happen in a large hall with numbered tables. The organisers monitor timelines rigorously. Circular Economy Strategies for Water & Energy is the theme for this year’s WEX Global, which is in line with the themes of previous years. “We believe that the circular economy is an idea intrinsic to the whole concept of the water-energy nexus, and enables us to provide a framework to examine many interesting ideas such as water reuse, energy efficiency, smart technology and energy from waste which are currently at the leading edge of thinking in the water sector,” explained Mark Barker, CEO of WEX Global. “Clearly the circular economy represents both an obligation and an outstanding opportunity for many actors in the water sector,” he added. This year, the format will be broadly similar to previous events, but there will be more interactive round table discussions as a means of promoting higher levels of debate. A number of networking events have been lined up as usual, including the Gala Dinner, which features the WEX Global Innovation awards ceremony to highlight the most innovative projects, technologies and companies in various categories of the water sector. An enjoyable highlight of WEX Global is the Innovations Forum, sponsored by Aqualia, which features short presentations by innovators in the water sector. The innovators are subjected to intense questioning by a panel of experts after which the best innovation is given the top award. “WEX is a tremendous event because you get such high quality people, intensive interactions, in-depth talks,” said Frank Rogalla, Director of Innovation & Technology at Aqualia. Sludge is an important part of the water-energy nexus. Cambi, the Norwegian headquartered company with its patented thermal hydrolysis process (THP) has sponsored many interesting panel discussions on biosolids in WEX over the years. “It’s very important to have an event where the people on the water side meet the people on the energy side, and together try to find the best pathway forward for a less energy and carbon-based footprint in our industry,” said Harald Kleiven, Senior VP of Business Development at Cambi. “WEX Global is at the forefront of the water and energy sectors in bringing together public and private entities to consider ways to meet targets in the most efficient way and to create business relationships at the same time,” said consultant Jim Southworth. “WEX is almost a family with many people returning each year, and it is this friendly aspect which makes WEX extraordinary,” he added.
