PROPERTY AN EXTREMELY NARROW CORNISH COTTAGE IS NOW ON SALE FOR £225,000 PROPERTY NEWS YOUR MUST-READ MONTHLY ROUND-UP INCREDIBLE HOUSE COVERED IN A MILLION MOSAIC PIECES HAS FINALLY BEEN REVEALED AFTER YEARS OF BEING OBSCURED BY SCAFFOLDING You know those houses you walk past and think ‘that’s my dream house’? Usually they’re painted in pastels or have a jazzy door. There’s not much you can really assess beyond the exterior. In the jazzy houses rankings, all those pastel-painted homes will have a tough job beating this place in Chiswick, though. Over in West London there’s a house covered in a million colourful mosaic pieces. The reason you haven’t noticed it before: It’s been covered up with scaffolding for the last few years while the owner and artist behind the home, Carrie Reichardt, added the finishing touches. Now, finally, it’s been revealed. And it’s pretty glorious. Carrie spent the last two decades decorating the house with an ‘uncensored’ art mural after becoming frustrated by galleries telling her what she could and couldn’t do with her art. ‘I just thought I wanted something that no-one could stop me from doing,’ says Carrie. ‘The house has been 20 years in the making but it’s still a working progress. ‘I finished the front last May. Now we’re working on the back. It’ll probably take another five years to complete because I want to finish my garden as well. ‘I suspect it’ll become an ongoing thing until I die or find another home to start to decorate. ‘Naturally it does take an awfully long time to do a piece like this in between working and having three children and everything else that needs doing – at times it was hard. ‘The kids don’t even like it that much. My oldest used to hate it. I think she didn’t like being in a house that stood out so much, rather than not liking the actual art, though she now appreciates it.’ If you’ve got a touch of claustrophobia, this probably isn’t the house for you. Same goes for anyone who, like me, has a wide bum that knocks over glasses and cutlery whenever they walk past a table. One of Britain’s narrowest homes, which measures just 9ft wide, is now on sale for £225,000. Known as the Doll’s House, the cottage in Cornwall has struggled to sell thanks to its tiny size, having functioned as a holiday cottage since last year. It’s now back on the market at a slightly lower price to entice any owners who dream of a teeny home. The cottage has just 339 square foot of floorspace, but managed to pack in one bedroom, two reception rooms, a kitchen, and a shower room. If you don’t have a spare £250,000 handy but are keen for a stay, just cross your fingers and hope the home doesn’t sell. At the moment it’s listed as a holiday let by Cornish Cottages, with a week’s stay priced between £245 and £515. Cornish Cottages describes the property as having a Mediterranean feel thanks to a stable door entrance and tiled floor, and notes the thick stone walls that add to the home’s cosiness. NO, OWNING A HOLIDAY HOME ISN’T THE BIGGEST SIGN OF SUCCESS The idea of success is subjective. We may consider different milestones in our lives to be more important than the other. One person’s success may be another person’s cause for contemplation. It seems to be universally known in the UK, however, that owning a holiday home is one of the biggest markers of doing well in life. While it’s undeniable that having a home abroad or in another part of the UK is pretty kushty, there are other small-scale events that might cause a person to feel equally successful. Over half the people surveyed around the country agreed that owning a second property away from home was an indicator of the good life. It is quite common to have one if you’re fairly financially comfortable, without being rich. But surely there are other hallmarks of success?
