Tigers’ U/16 cubs continue Matthews Cup revival BALMAIN have unearthed an outstanding crop of rugby league juniors from their U/16 Harold Matthews Cup squad. In his debut series as a Junior Cup coach. Ross Mignacca has moulded his Tiger cubs into a competitive unit - chalking up two wins and a narrow loss from the opening four rounds of the competition. The Tiger cubs showed character and skill to roll the Bullpups 24-12 last Saturday in junior representative action at Belmore Sports Ground with strong performances from talented lock Thomas Kwok, centre Dylan Cowin and elusive winger Jayme Elias. Leading the way was the industrious Kwok, who has proved a real find this series. Along with co-forwards Henry O’Kane, Brandon Tumeth, prop Siosifa Amone, Will Abou-Arrage and hooker Cougar Wheeler the emerging Kwok has featured prominently in a powerful pack that has laid the foundations for future success. Kwok scored two of the Tigers’ tries with Elias and Tumeth adding four pointers and five eighth Zane Camroux booting four goals. MICHAEL Frain’s U/18 SG Ball cubs crashed to a 32-14 loss with solid performances from Kurtis Morrin, hooker Blake Layton and lock Junior Seve. Wednesday 7 March, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 21 HOMEMAKERS 101st birthday celebrations for Twilight Aged Care’s Joan TWILIGHT Aged Care resident of over 10 years, Joan McKimm will celebrate her 101st birthday this Friday March 9 during a morning tea at her Hunters Hill Village home surrounded by family, fellow residents and staff. On celebrating her centenary last year Joan received a letter of congratulations from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and was very humbled by all of the fuss. Twilight Aged Care CEO Lesley Jordan said “Joan always has a smile on her face and a kind word; she continues with regular art classes and keeps her mind active with puzzles and crosswords”. “We are so pleased to be able to celebrate such a significant milestone, and we wish Joan continued health and happiness.” Born into a large family of 11 children, Joan was twin to brother Arthur. She and her brothers and sisters endured two World Wars and famine (growing up she threatened her grandchildren with bread and dripping for dinner if they misbehaved!). She remembers the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge; construction of the Opera House and has witnessed no less than 25 Prime Ministers hold office! Joan was a proud and loving mother to two children, Margaret and Colin. She has outlived both her children and all her siblings. She maintains that eating an orange a day is the key to her longevity. Joan has always had an active lifestyle. In her ‘prime’ she was a champion golfer. There can’t have been too many women on the golf course in the 1930s, but that didn’t stop her. She also loved lawn bowls and received many accolades and championship trophies from her local Roselands Bowling Club. Lawn bowls was a significant part of her life.
