Gorton Community Center: ‘the gathering
place in the heart of the community’
At Gorton Community
Center, our mission is to
be the gathering place in
the heart of the community
— where people connect,
converse, learn, listen,
play and perform. We take
this to heart as we create
summer fun and plan
stimulating camps for your
children. While many past
favorites will be brought
back, there are several new
exciting options, as well.
Gorton will offer everything
from RoboThink,
film, sylvan, sewing and
the original camp, while
a wide variety of summer camp experiences
right here in our community with
flexible schedules, affordable pricing and
a reputation that is second to none.
From traditional, super fun day camps
to sports, nature, dance, art and technology,
we have a camp for every child. Registration
March 13 for non-residents.
New this year, we are proud to offer
extended day camp. To accommodate
working or busy parents, campers can
stay an extra three hours (or until picked
up) and enjoy activities such as crafts,
games, sports and more! Extended Day
Camp will be located at Deerpath Middle
School, an ideal location for McCormick
and All Stars campers. Campers can be
picked up any time before 6 p.m.
Our traditional day camps, which include
Summer Discovery, Everett Explorers,
McCormick and All Stars, are for
children ages 3-12 and are offered from
one week to eight weeks, so you can customize
your summer camp schedule to fit
your family’s summer plans. Many of our
camps offer the opportunity to participate
in weekly trips to the beach, and campers
enjoy multiple field trips throughout the
summer.
Adventure Camp provides an all-day,
outdoor camp experience for six weeks,
or in two-week increments. This year,
our sport-specific camps include sailing,
golf, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, football,
gymnastics and volleyball. We also offer
STEM. camps, which include robotics,
Minecraft, 3-D design and printing, augmented
reality, and more.
Our beloved Twigs Camp is back and
better than ever with an emphasis on art
(including ceramics, drawing and painting),
theater and dance. Dance Me a Story
camps for ages 3-7 will have your tiny
dancer twirling to the music of “Mary
Poppins” and “The Wizard of Oz.” At our
new So You Think You Can Dance Camp,
campers ages 6-9 can get into the groove
and explore a new style of dance each day.
Wildlife camps are always a favorite
and the Wildlife Discovery Center is one
of the best places for kids to learn about
animals and nature as they study and observe
local wildlife along the Middlefork
Savana. Daily interaction with the WDC
animals provides children with the opportunity
to learn animal handling basics and
much more.
For older kids who are currently in
grades 7-10 or are 13-15 years old, our
popular Counselor in Training volunteer
program offers the opportunity to develop
leadership skills through summer work
experience. The many skills learned by
the CIT will aid them in possibly obtaining
future paying job opportunities. The
CIT information packet and application
is available for pick up at the Recreation
Center or on our website.
It's exciting when
Math Makes Sense!
At Mathnasium, we believe that every child has the ability to
be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching the way that
makes sense to them. When math makes sense, kids excel—
whether they’re far behind or eager to get ahead.
For more than a decade, the Mathnasium Method has
transformed the way kids in grades 2–12 understand and
appreciate math. We build math knowledge upon what they
already know—this helps kids learn quickly and boosts their
confidence right away. When math makes sense, grades
improve, excitement grows, and doors open!
HP AYSO VIP: the only soccer program serving
special needs players on the North Shore
Highland Park AYSO
Region 891 is excited for
hundreds of players to take
the fields this spring.
If you make your way
around Highland Park on
a Saturday during the season,
you’re sure to see a
rainbow of uniform colors
and kids of all ages playing
soccer while parents,
coaches and friends cheer
them on.
AYSO has been a top
choice for parents and their
soccer players for more
than 50 years. Guided by
its six philosophies — Everyone
Plays, Balanced
Teams, Open Registration,
Positive Coaching, Good
Sportsmanship and Player
Development — AYSO
places strong emphasis on
ethics, sportsmanship and
the development of the
whole child.
Most parents recognize
AYSO, but what they may
not know is that the AYSO
VIP (Very Important Player)
Program provides a
quality soccer experience
for children whose disabilities
make it difficult
to successfully participate
on core AYSO teams. HP
AYSO Region 891 offers
the only program like this
on Chicago’s entire North
Shore.
For parents thinking
they would never see their
children playing a sport or
making new friends, VIP
gives them joy and hope.
They are able to relax and
enjoy watching their children
having fun like other
kids, perhaps for the first
time.
Jennifer Freeman, parent
of three players, encourages
parents to look
into the program.
“There is a wide range
of things that can impact a
player’s ability to participate
on a mainstream team.
The VIP program provides
opportunity for players
who are visually impaired,
have mobility issues, are
mentally or emotionally
challenged or suffer from
autism, Down syndrome
or cerebral palsy.”
Coaches and administrators
have experience with
special needs kids and
have specialized training.
The program is designed
to be flexible and creative.
Teams are co-ed and since
there are no other programs
like VIP, players
can be drawn from several
neighboring regions. And,
the VIP program cost is
subsidized by HP AYSO,
so the cost to families is
reduced.
Kids with special needs
are estimated to make up
more than 10 percent of
the school-age population.
Special schools and
classrooms can isolate
these children so the VIP
Program has been structured
to integrate our special
kids into the rest of
AYSO by using “buddies,”
who are a little older, have
played soccer and are
more typical in their development.
Todd Rosenthal, parent
of two soccer players and
president of the Highland
Park AYSO volunteer
board, is excited for the
spring season of VIP.
There are many potential
VIP players in our local
schools and communities.
These kids within the
VIP program can have the
benefits of sports participation
in a supportive, fun
environment.
For more information
about the VIP program,
parents may contact VIP@
PLAN IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR
pre-wedding
salon experience!
Pascal pour Elle has worked with thousands
of brides and their families and bridal
parties, helping them look and feel their best
for the big day! The salon visit for you and
your bridal team is the perfect opportunity
to create the right mood and set the stage for
the memorable weekend to follow. At Pascal
pour Elle, this might include champagne,
caviar, limo pick-up, and all the VIP touches
to reflect that once-in-a lifetime experience!
So to help with the “beauty down the aisle”
on that most special day when all eyes are
on you...we’ve put together a checklist of
some of the things to be considered and
managed in advance that will bring out the
most beautiful you.
PLAN AHEAD!
Select a salon and spa that is of the highest
quality and reputation, with a team of
licensed professionals that can deliver under
one roof all your bridal parties beauty and
grooming needs-from head to toe. Consult
with the salon manager to ensure your
comfort level with his or her approach and
how you and your guests will be cared for.
Book the date/s for everything, if possible
months in advance but at least one month
out, to avoid any scheduling hassles. Look
in the date and times with your family and
bridal party.
DETERMINE YOUR BRIDAL
LOOK IN ADVANCE!
Once you’ve booked the salon/spa, now
the fun begins. You get to work with your
salon consultant and/or stylist in advance
to determine the look you want-for you and
your entire bridal party. You may already
know, or you may want to look online or at
bridal publications to find what you desire
for your day. Use your salon consultant or
stylist to bounce ideas off of so the final
decision is right for you.
FINGERS AND TOES ARE
OBVIOUS, BUT DON’T
FORGET THE SKIN!
There is without a question a “natural glow”
of happiness on a bride’s face when her
wedding day arrives. But you can also help
enhance that glow with a series of facials
leading up to the big day, perhaps starting as
early as six months prior. To ensure pictureperfect
looking skin on your wedding day,
the last prenuptial facial should take place
no later than two weeks before the big day.
Yes, it’s all in the planning. If you treat the
salon experience with the same advance
attention to detail as every other aspect of
your wedding day, then you and your bridal
party will feel great, look great, and enjoy
the pampering along the way.
