SchoolCare were approached by <strong>St</strong> Edward’s <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Free</strong> Ecumenical Middle<br />
School to discuss solutions to augment their Shelter in Place and Lockdown<br />
procedure.<br />
The solution was to design and deploy a solution based on SchoolCare’s<br />
SchoolSafe Solution.

<strong>St</strong> Edward’s <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Free</strong> Ecumenical Middle School is a four-form<br />
entry co-educational Middle School for pupils aged 9-13 based in<br />
Windsor.<br />
THE CHALLENGE<br />
SchoolCare were approached by <strong>St</strong> Edward’s <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Free</strong> Ecumenical<br />
Middle School to help develop a solution to compliment their<br />
Shelter in Place and Lockdown policy.<br />
The School is a large co-educational middle school based in<br />
Windsor and have been proactively developing their shelter in<br />
place policies and procedures in the light of today’s modern social<br />
climate. The school were seeking a solution which allowed fast and<br />
efficient communication accross a large school campus, both for<br />
day to day messages and in the event of an emergency requiring<br />
the invocation of the Shelter in Place procedure.<br />
With SchoolCare’s focus on best value, the challenge was to deliver<br />
all of the requirements without compromising on quality.<br />
THE SOLUTION<br />
As an ICT Solutions provider with a pedegree of over 35 years,<br />
SchoolCare have a track record of designing robust and reliable<br />
solutions for all aspects of ICT.<br />
2017 saw the launch of 360Safety, a portfolio of products focussing<br />
on the use of ICT to solve new challenges, specifically related to<br />
School Safety.<br />
SchoolSafe is an in house developed Network Based Public Address<br />
Solution which leverages the school’s existing infrastructure to<br />
deploy a site wide public address system, without the need for<br />
expensive amplifiers and expensive custom infrastructure. All<br />
SchoolSafe devices are powered using Power over Ethernet (PoE)<br />
and so only a single cable to each device is required.<br />
SchoolSafe is far more than just public address as it incorporates<br />
a number of additional features such as; Zone Based Overhead<br />
Paging (Page Classrooms, External Areas or <strong>St</strong>aff Room), Lesson<br />
Change Notification (both timed and manual), Emergency Alert<br />
Messaging triggered from panic buttons or Break Glass.<br />
Being network based, SchoolSafe can take inputs from a variety<br />
of sources including fire panels (to allow alert messaging based
on a trigger from the fire panel)<br />
and can also output to systems<br />
such as Paxton Access Control, to<br />
trigger events to lock or unlock<br />
doors depending on the alert<br />
status.<br />
THE RESULTS<br />
The SchoolSafe deployment<br />
made use of speakers<br />
positioned in all classrooms,<br />
in the corridors and around<br />
the perimeter of the building.<br />
Additional LED <strong>St</strong>robe Indicators<br />
were installed to ensure Hearing<br />
Impared <strong>St</strong>udents had a visual<br />
indication of an alert.<br />
The system is controlled by a<br />
central command unit in the<br />
front office which can be used<br />
to make announcements accross<br />
the site as well as triggering<br />
lockdown alerts using pin<br />
protected hot keys.<br />
The emergency alerts can also be<br />
triggered using break glass call<br />
points in appropriate positions.<br />
The installation was completed<br />
alongside a full CCTV<br />
deployment in around 2 weeks.<br />
