Broadfield marks 150 years • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A SUCCESSFUL three-day celebration was held over the weekend to mark Broadfield School’s 150th jubilee. The start of the jubilee was marked by the school’s oldest living former pupil Ted Smith, 97, and his great, great nephew and a current pupil, Hayden Lineham, 7, planting a scarlet oak tree. It was then followed by the cutting of a cake by the school’s youngest pupil Matilda Hansen, 5, and past pupil Margaret Morrish, who was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for heritage preservation. Hayden’s mother Rachel Smith – who also teaches at the school part-time, said it was an amazing weekend with about 2500 people taking part. “Older people in the community loved reconnecting with old friends. It was lovely,” she said. Miss Smith said the pupils also loved the event, and took part in many activities at the fete on Sunday. The celebration also included a tour of the Broadfield Gardens and a formal jubilee dinner. SHAPES: Rolleston School pupils sketching shapes out on their school courts.
