Do they need to gain confidence in reading aloud? Reading to a gentle and patient furry friend can help. Selwyn District Libraries are partnering with members of the Selwyn Dog Training Club to offer Paws for Reading. Book your child in to spend 15min reading to a friendly, carefully selected dog. Take a book that your child has read before or choose one from the library before the session. Most sessions will be on the mobile library bus. Dogs have each been carefully selected and will be monitored by the dog’s owner/handler. A library staff member will also be on hand at all times during the session, however, the sessions encourage children to read to the dog with minimal adult intervention. Do not book your child into a session if they are nervous or anxious around dogs. Do not book your child into a session if they have a known allergy to dogs.
