Delineation<br />

You are the traffic accident at 5 p.m. on Friday. The gnashing teeth of drivers<br />
Inconvenienced one last time.<br />
You are the bright red cardinal<br />
Leaving bird shit all over my cousin’s truck.<br />
He says,<br />
that’s how he knew it was you.<br />
You are a year of my mama, <strong>to</strong>o sad <strong>to</strong> dance.<br />
You are the checkbook in an old cowboy boot.<br />
You are all the gifts I think of buying you for Christmas.<br />
You are Xavier’s fingers clicking your birthday digits in<strong>to</strong> his phone a hundred times a day, a reflex, a prayer, a charm.<br />
You are the liminal space<br />
Where Xavier turns up his eye, tells me<br />
that he’s a man now.<br />
And I concede.<br />
You are that flying steel cage molded on<strong>to</strong> something<br />
that isn’t there anymore.
