Breath of Song 

Breath of Song brings together ten dynamic and 

exciting original works by contemporary women 

composers. The collection features an eclectic mix of 

styles and colours, specially selected with modern 

concert programming in mind — from settings of 

hymn-like simplicity and a rich choral sound to works 

featuring theatrical body percussion and a fresh closeharmony 

style. Secular and sacred texts from across 

the centuries are given fresh life, and new words and 

sounds are introduced to the repertoire, including 

the onomatopoeic echoes of Hindustani classical 

instruments in Esmail’s ‘TaReKiTa’ and the whistling of 

the wind and birds in Hawley’s ‘The Arrow and the Song’.

Kerry Andrew is a composer, performer and author 

and the winner of four British Composer Awards. 

With a PhD in composition from the University of 

York, Kerry specialises in experimental vocal and 

choral music, music-theatre and community music, 

and as a performer, sings with the award-winning 

Juice Vocal Ensemble and with her alt-folk band You 

Are Wolf.

winds’. Clustered harmonies, cross-rhythms, 

and vocal effects are combined with bell-like passages 

and rippling figurations in the piano, and the optional 

percussion part adds further rhythmic and dynamic 

interest. The semi-chorus part can be sung by one or more 

sopranos or a children’s choir.

This is a spirited arrangement of the popular fourteenthcentury 

carol for mixed voices, with an optional part for 

tambourine in the final verse. The familiar melody weaves 

between the vocal parts, and the piece is characterized 

by medieval harmonies and a rocking thirds motif. An 

English singing translation is presented alongside the 

original Latin, allowing choirs to perform the carol in either 

language.

1886 - 1979 

Rebecca Clarke was a self-styled ‘viola player and 

composer’. She studied composition with Sir Charles 

Stanford and her compositional output contains 

over 100 works (including juvenilia). Although 

most of her compositions are for the chamber 

instruments she had professional experience with, 

her mature songs are perhaps her finest body of 

work and they are widely performed and recorded.

The composer has combined a single line of Latin, ‘O virgo 

splendens’, with an earthy, late 13th-century Marian text 

in Middle English to create a work which reflects both 

the divine and the human qualities of the Virgin Mary. 

Beginning and ending with plainchant-style passages, 

Hevene Quene is by turns restrained, sparkling, pensive, and 

pleading. Suitable for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary 

and for concert use, this is an approachable and rewarding 

anthem.

This charming carol, composed in 1975 by Barbara Bell, 

was discovered by John Rutter, who enlisted the help of 

John Suchet and Classic FM to track down the composer. 

Haunting in character, but with a delightful French waltz 

feel and a sweeping piano part, La Berceuse has been 

recorded by Voces8 on the Decca label.

depicted in the poem, which “flows along forever with 

trees on either hand.”

Born and raised in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, 

Eleanor Daley received her Bachelor of Music Degree 

in Organ Performance from Queen’s University in 

Kingston, Ontario, and holds diplomas in piano 

and organ from the Royal Conservatory of Music, 

Toronto and Trinity College, England. She has been 

the Director of Music at Fairlawn Avenue United 

Church in Toronto, Ontario since 1982. 

A prolific composer, Eleanor has a remarkable gift 

for melody. Her works are most notable for their 

sensitive interweaving of text and music.

Pentecost. It begins with a statement of the traditional

voices, and the work concludes with a restatement of the

compositions are performed worldwide 

and frequently featured at American Choral 

Directors Association conferences, All-State festivals, 

Carnegie Hall, and other distinguished international 

concert halls from Australia to South America and

In addition to composing full-time, Elaine actively 

engages in bringing her music to life as the guest

Libby Larsen is one of America’s most prolific and 

most performed living composers. She has created a 

catalogue of over 200 works spanning virtually every 

genre from intimate vocal and chamber music to 

massive orchestral and choral scores. Her music has 

been praised for its dynamic, deeply inspired, and 

vigorous contemporary American spirit. 

In April 2003, the Library of Congress announced 

Libby Larsen’s appointment as the first holder 

of the Harissios Papamarkou Chair in Education 

and Technology in the John W. Kluge Center. She 

has received numerous awards and accolades, 

including a 1994 Grammy, and has held residencies 

with the California Institute of the Arts, the Arnold 

Schoenberg Institute, the Charlotte Symphony, and 

the Colorado Symphony. Larsen’s many commissions 

and recordings are a testament to her fruitful 

collaborations with a long list of world-renowned 

artists, including The King’s Singers, Benita Valente,

Cornish composer Becky McGlade studied music 

at Royal Holloway, University of London, and now 

leads a busy musical life as a composer, cellist, and 

teacher. 

McGlade’s unique compositional style, described 

as ‘beautiful’ by Gramophone magazine, is 

engaging and dynamic, with fluid vocal lines 

and unexpected harmonic twists within an 

immediately accessible sound-world. The majority 

of her compositions are choral pieces, many of 

which draw inspiration from her Christian faith. 

Her works include psalm settings, carols, and 

settings of other biblical and secular texts, as well 

as solo songs. Recent commissions include a carol 

for York Minster’s Service of Nine Lessons and 

Carols, and a secular work for the Eden Project, 

Cornwall. 

McGlade’s music has been performed throughout 

the UK, including by the Choir of St John’s College, 

Cambridge, the London Oriana Choir, the Choir 

of Ely Cathedral, and the BBC Symphony Chorus, 

and is recorded by Sonoro and the Choir of 

Truro Cathedral. In 2021 she signed a long-term 

agreement with Oxford University Press.

Hilary Tann lives in the foothills of the Adirondack 

Mountains in Upstate New York where she chairs 

the Music Department and is the John Howard 

Payne Professor at Union College, Schenectady. 

Recent composer-residencies include the 2011 

Eastman School of Music Women in Music Festival, 

2013 Women Composers Festival of Hartford, and 

2015 Welsh Music Centre (Tŷ Cerdd). 

Praised for its lyricism and formal balance, her 

music is influenced by a strong identification 

with the natural world. A deep interest in the 

traditional music of Japan has led to private study 

of the shakuhachi and guest visits to Japan, Korea, 

and China. Her compositions have been widely 

performed and recorded by ensembles such as the 

European Women’s Orchestra, Tenebrae, Lontano, 

Marsyas Trio, Thai Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool 

Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, 

and KBS Philharmonic in Seoul, Korea.

1911- 1987 

Phyllis Tate was one of the most prominent 

and highly respected British composers of the 

second half of the twentieth century. Her music 

was widely performed during her lifetime and 

received great critical acclaim. Preferring the more 

intimate musical forms and combinations to larger 

orchestral media, many of her most distinguished 

contributions to modern English music were for 

chamber ensemble or for solo voice or voices with 

small groups of instruments. 

Tate’s musical output was extensive and varied, 

ranging from concertos to music for schools 

and from duets to operas. She also collaborated 

with several outstanding artists of the time such 

as Charles Causley, author Michael Morpurgo, 

performers Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, 

cellist William Pleeth, and saxophonist John 

Harle. Tate’s interest in musical textures led to the 

use of unusual instruments such as the celeste, 

the harmonica, the lute, the bass clarinet, the 

accordion, and the saxophone. These instruments 

were often used alongside the human voice.

A Secular Requiem 

(The Phoenix and the Turtle)

Originally written for tenor voice, flute, horn, two cellos, 

piano, and harpsichord, this second version is scored for 

mixed chorus, double winds, trumpet, trombone, four 

cellos, and organ. Both beginning and ending with a 

funeral, this is a setting of a bird-themed poem, attributed 

to Shakespeare, with many allegorical and historical 

interpretations. 

The story, of how the phoenix (female) and turtledove 

(male) fall in love and then die together in a fire, is rich 

in poetic associations. Tate’s composition has been 

applauded for its directness of setting and the apt and 

imaginative music, instrumentation, and scoring.

A choral suite in five movements by five writers; H.D. 

(Songs of Cyprus) Hilaire Belloc, Thomas Chatterton, May 

Sarton, and Kathleen Raine. The soprano solo sings the 

dream-like first movement ‘Gather For Festival’ then the 

upper voice choir sing the more lively Tarantella before 

both solo and chorus joining for the Roundelay. The 

haunting ‘Lose the pain in the snow’ (for choir and sparsesounding, 

chordal accompaniment) follows, before we are 

taken ‘To the Wild Hills’ in a spirited, final movement that 

dies away mirroring the lyrics “...the dance will be still...”.
