Spring is here and Easter is fast
approaching, which means an
extra couple of days off and some quality time to
spend at home with the family. It also means we
can indulge in some tasty foods and look forward
to Discover Lincolnshire Weekend (24-25 March).
As the sun begins to rise higher in the sky and the days
become longer, it’s the perfect time to blow away the
cobwebs and get out and about exploring with the family.
We’ve listed lots of free things to do for Discover Lincolnshire
Weekend which you can see at VisitLincoln.com/discover
There’s also so many great events taking place. Lincoln
Performing Arts Centre, Lincoln Drill Hall and The Collection
are once-again joining together to promote their family
friendly activities under the banner of EGGCITE. This year
will also include Lincoln Cathedral and hopefully the Terry
O’Toole Theatre in North Hykeham, and there is a brand new
Easter panto ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at the New Theatre Royal.
2018 also marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal
Air Force and we’re joining in with the national anniversary
just look at www.VisitLincoln.com/raf for the latest events
and activities.
Lincolnshire has a fascinating connections with the
RAF past, present and future. Don’t miss the Bastion in the
Air exhibition at RAF Scampton and The Collection (April
– September) which links to the educational programme
Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire is doing with schools across
the county; and if you liked the Lincoln Knights’ Trail last
year look out for a new art trail across the city and
surrounding countryside called ‘100 Voices’ (see page 36).
NEWS
Desperate Dad
As if we didn’t have enough extra curricular
activities to keep up with, a brand new one
has recently entered our stratosphere.
In addition to football, aikido,
swimming and drama classes,
ballet has now made an
unexpected yet more than
welcome appearance.
Never the shrinking violet,
my comedic youngest has
thoroughly embraced his
artistic side and thrown
toeing the line...
himself headlong into these
new dance sessions with
great aplomb.
It seems he has a real knack
for the theatricals – I can’t
think where he gets it from?
His pointed toe could
have your eye out and
his technique is being
honed every week, he’ll be
Nutcracking with the best of
them in no time at all for sure.
Completely outnumbered
– with a boy to girl ratio to
get many a red-blooded male
more than a little hot under
the collar – he dons his shorts
and vest with glee and skips
off into the studio without a
backward glance.
It’s really a joy to watch, as
engulfed in a sea of pink
leotards he remains totally
unfazed taking up expert
position on the mat ready for
action.
It’s in stark contrast to my
football-loving eldest, who
always looks on in scorn,
thoroughly put out at being
dragged across town to
satisfy his brother’s latest
whim.
But isn’t that what life’s
really all about? It’s our
differences that make us
who we are and I’m always
happy to encourage my boys’
penchants, within reason of
course.
“The world would be
a pretty boring place
if we all supported
Chelsea FC and
perhaps slightly more
bewildering if all of
us harboured secret
ambitions to star in
our own Swan Lakes.”
Yet this new activity has not
been unduly foisted upon him,
pushy parent I most certainly
4
Easter 2018

am not. It was something he
asked to try, spurred on no
doubt by his weekly theatre
group escapades.
He’s been treading the
boards for a good few years
now, with summer and
Christmas stage shows major
highlights in our extended
family calendar.
With a true love for musicals,
thanks to ‘Mamma Mia!’
ABBA were never off his
junior iPod a few years back
and you’d regularly find
him charging around the
house belting out ‘Money,
Money, Money’ of a Saturday
afternoon.
And with his confidence
growing all the time, it’s been
a privilege to watch him
blossom from timid toddler
into strutting seven-year-old,
with dance floor moves that
would give John Travolta a
serious run for his money.
Extended parts in school
plays are now starting to
appear – a leading role soon
to be in the pipeline I’ll wager
He’s always been one to
relish a new challenge and
strive to be different, yet
able to rub along affably
with everyone at the same
time, admirable qualities
I’m pleased to observe
as he grows more fiercely
independent each day.
This I put squarely down to
his Portuguese ancestry. A
fire and passion in his belly
is clear for all to see which
I’m sure will stand him in very
good stead for whatever path
of life he eventually chooses.
Always the life and soul of
a party, you can hear him
coming a mile off, ‘quiet
voices’ ever the challenge
at the dinner table and calm
down times.
Yet with one of kindest
hearts you could ever wish
to encounter, he seems to
take everything in his stride
and treat all he meets with
an exuberant energy and
infectious enthusiasm one
can only marvel at.
It is this exemplary attitude
that has seen him fit so
well into his latest dramatic
episode no doubt.
“Indeed he seems
to thrive in these
new fish-out-ofwater
territories - no
unjust prejudices or
preconceptions exist
for ballet boy here.”
He’s already struck up a
pleasing bond with another
of his male compatriots,
but as long as he’s dancing
he seems just as happy as
L(B)arry.
We could all certainly learn
a good thing or two from
his constant positivity and
inclusive outlook.
Of course adding yet another
‘terrifying experience’ to our
already cluttered calendar
doesn’t come without its
challenges.
Weekends seem more of
a blur than ever before at
present, but if the boys are
content then so am I (mostly).
And even if my little Wayne
Sleep never graces another
stage or decides to keep his
feet firmly on the ground in
a few months’ time, at least
we’ll have given it a jolly
good go.
Never ones to ‘tiptoe’ around
a topic – we just couldn’t be
prouder of our budding
Billy Elliot.
Barry Wood is an ex journalist now working
for the NHS in Lincolnshire. A father of two
boys and husband to one Portuguese wife,
he blogs regularly as Desperate Dad.
Holiday magic
top tips for planning a trip to disneyland paris...
Thinking of visiting Disneyland Paris in 2018 but feeling
bamboozled by the array of options on offer? Here,
Molly’s Guide columnist Sam Curtis shares her top tips
for getting the most out of your stay.
Firstly, congratulations on your
choice of holiday destination. If you
are planning a trip to Disneyland
Paris, especially this summer as
the park welcomes a host of Marvel
superheroes, you are in for a funfilled
experience.
But let’s get this out of the way
early on - if you’re looking to
relax and recharge your batteries,
Disneyland Paris (or ‘DLP’ as it will
be shortened to herewith) is not, at
least in my experience, the place to
chill out.
It is, however, a place of wonder,
of visual and aural stimulation, of
nausea-inducing rollercoaster rides,
of crowds, queues and Disney
magic by the bucketload.
A trip to DLP may also prove to be
a surprisingly emotional experience.
I can’t explain why – maybe it’s
because most Disney films make
for sentimental viewing but I found
my five-day stay was a bit like
opening the floodgates to a river of
childhood movie memories, from
Peter Pan to Star Wars.
I never thought I’d well-up after
giving Pluto a hug (despite being
fully aware there was an actor inside
the costume) or be ridiculously
excited to see Mickey Mouse
walking around the park.
As for meeting Darth Vader – that
was utterly terrifying. The memory
of him pointing his finger at me and
clenching his fist in an ‘I could crush
your windpipe kind of way’ will last
a lifetime.
No, I wasn’t expecting to
experience the degree of
excitement, awe and wonder that
I did.
The thing to remember about DLP is
there is so much to see and do that
if I were to recount every detail of
my stay, you’d be bored rigid, plus,
I could probably write enough to fill
a book.
So, rather than have you nod off,
here are a few of my favourite
things...
THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY
My ‘must-see’ has to be the
fireworks display over Sleeping
Beauty Castle. We positioned
ourselves about halfway down Main
Street, grabbed a hot chocolate from
a nearby vendor and had a group
hug while the spectacle unfolded.
The pyrotechnics are amazing, as
you’d expect, as is the light show
projected onto the castle walls.
Add a Disney soundtrack and
iconic moments from some of the
most memorable Disney films and
something will undoubtedly stir in
your soul. If it doesn’t, get someone
to check your pulse…
THE LIVE SHOWS
We saw several shows inside the
parks. They offer the chance to
take the weight off your (extremely
tired) feet. The Action! Stunt Show
Spectacular was 45 minutes of
adrenalin-fuelled motor action and
youngsters may be excited to see
Lightning McQueen from Cars in
action, too. And we didn’t see it for
ourselves but everyone raves about
Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
6
Easter 2018

THE RIDES
Be aware there are height restrictions
on quite a lot of the rides. My
then three-year-old was just five
centimetres too short for the more
thrilling rides like Big Thunder
Mountain (a runaway train ride), the
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the
Star Tours experience. Staff on the
gates will not be cajoled into letting
youngsters ride if they’re not tall
enough and rightly so – Disney takes
the safety of its guests very seriously.
If you can train your child to make
puppy-dog eyes at gate attendants,
they might offer them a fast track
pass to come back in a year or two,
when they have grown an inch.
Tip: If you want to beat the queues, buy
fast track passes, especially if visiting
during the school holidays.
THE CHARACTERS
Did I queue to get my picture
taken with Jessie from Toy Story,
Spider-Man (who was even more
charismatic in the flesh), Pluto and
Jungle Book’s Baloo and King Louie?
You betcha. You will, too.
GETTING THERE
You can get to DLP via car and
ferry, plane or train. My family and
I opted to travel on Eurostar. We
caught the 7.45am train from Newark
to King Cross, giving us plenty of
time to make the 10.15am Eurostar
departure which travels directly to
Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy train station.
Going through passport control is
quick and easy, much like you’d
experience if you catch a flight. By
10.45 we were speeding through
the English countryside towards the
Channel Tunnel, with a glass of red
wine in one hand and a ham sarnie
from our packed lunch in the other.
Tip: If staying at a Disney hotel, it’s worth
paying a little bit extra to have your bags
transported to your hotel from the train
station, that way, you can get off the train
and go straight into the parks.
STAYING THERE
We stayed at Disney’s Santa Fe
Hotel, which has a Cars theme.
Rooms are more than adequate for a
family of four. Regular shuttle buses
run to and from the park - the longest
we had to wait to catch one was 10
minutes. Alternatively, the Disney
Village is a pleasant 15-20 minute
walk away. Don’t forget to take some
croissants from breakfast so you can
feed the fish that live in the river that
runs alongside the walkway. We
couldn’t work out what kind they are
but they are BIG. This was one of the
highlights for my family!
FOOD AND DRINKS
We opted for a full-board package
and were issued with dining vouchers
that were valid at most of the
restaurants inside both Disney parks,
as well as selected Disney hotels. As
a result, we spent a lot of time eating.
Restaurants in the park serve a
variety of different foods, from spicy,
Middle Eastern dishes at Restaurant
Agrabah to international cuisine at
the Restaurant de Stars. What we
didn’t realise was that we could have
cashed in our vouchers at any of the
Disney fast-food outlets, instead of
opting for a sit-down meal.
Tip: Book your dining options in advance
where possible, especially if you have
younger children. If you don’t have a
reservation, queuing for a table can take
up to an hour. If you don’t buy a dining
package – fill up at breakfast and take
as many snacks as you can fit inside a
rucksack into the park. Drinks (soft or
alcoholic) are also horrendously expensive,
so again, take as many as you can in your
suitcase. There are drinking fountains
around the park, so you can fill up a plastic
bottle and keep hydrated that way, too.
MERCHANDISE
You may need to remortgage if
you are planning on bringing home
gifts from DLP. As an example,
the Minnie Mouse headband that
everyone seems to wear costs 20
euros – so roughly 20 quid. Instead,
head to Primark, or George at Asda
before you go and stock up on
Disney merchandise this side of the
English Channel. Then pack it in your
suitcase and when your children are
pestering for a Buzz Lightyear T-shirt,
produce one from your holdall. Your
bank manager will thank you for it.
STAY COMFORTABLE
Fitbit wearers – make sure yours is
fully charged and on your wrist at all
times. We clocked up 20,000 steps in
one day. Seriously though – be ready
for the amount of walking you’ll do
and wear sensible footwear. Take a
pushchair for under-fives – it can be
pretty exhausting for them, although
you can hire wheels for a nonreturnable
20 euros a day (ouch).
THE WEATHER
Yes, it’s Paris and yes the climate is
similar to that of the UK so pack for
a mixed bag of rain and sunshine.
We went in May and it was both
boiling hot and pretty nippy all in the
same day. If visiting in the winter,
take thermals, it can get really cold
queuing when it’s minus two below.
THE BALLOONS
Do yourself a favour, just say no
if your little one has their heart set
on a Mickey Mouse balloon. That
way you’ll avoid the tantrum when
the string slips through their fingers
and you both watch on helplessly
as 10 euros disappears into the
stratosphere.
LAST WORD
It has been 247 days since I last
visited DLP. My children have asked
me roughly 400 times when will we
be going back and my youngest
insists I measure him regularly to see
if he has grown enough to go on the
Star Tours ride (he was too small last
year). So, if this is your first time at
DLP, start saving because one visit
probably isn’t going to be enough.
NEWS
Seasonal fun
When I was a child, there was really only
one major celebration in the calendar.
Christmas. Christmas was most
definitely where it was at. But there’s
a contender for the Christmas crown.
Easter is now a pretty big deal.
Here in the UK we spend almost £4bn* on food,
drink and gifts on what has become the second
biggest event in the religious (and therefore
social) calendar.
To give you a sense of perspective we spend
around £77bn at Christmas time as a nation, so
Easter has a way to go to catch up but still, we
are talking FOUR BILLION pounds.
I could have a rant about how we have lost
the true spirit of Christmas and Easter to
commercialism and how it wasn’t like that back
in the day. But there’s no going back to a time
when children received one or two eggs and the
Easter Bunny was still very much hiding out in its
American burrow.
So, it’s probably just easier to embrace it. But
which is best? There’s only one way to find
out… fight!
Sadly, I can’t pitch a Christmas tree against
a giant Easter egg, Harry Hill style, so you’ll
just have to read on and draw your own
conclusions…
THE WEATHER
Christmas: It’s usually freezing outside.
Sometimes, however, December temperatures
don’t plummet quite low enough and just when
you are counting on a cold snap so you can
store your turkey in the shed, you find yourself
dealing with an unseasonably warm spell and
8
christmas vs easter: which is best?
no room in your fridge for all of that festive food.
And worse than that, no way of chilling your
celebratory bottle of prosecco.
Easter: Generally, the weather is warmer,
sometimes so much so you can leave off wearing
your big coat in favour of an anorak to go on that
egg hunt around the garden. But the weather can
be just as unpredictable in spring. I once spent
an Easter weekend at Butlins in Skegness at the
end of March and we woke up to several feet of
snow. We made snowmen by the sea.
It was a surreal experience.
THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Most schools take a two-week break for
Christmas and the same again at Easter, so this
round looks like it could end in a tie.
However, there is a distinct difference between
the two. During the Easter break parents don’t
generally spend at least 50 per cent of it running
around like headless turkeys doing the following:
1. Making sure Santa has done his job correctly
when it comes to gifts.
2. Buying the entire contents of their local
supermarket in preparation for Christmas dinner
and catering for at least seven buffets over the
festive period.
However, Easter is a moveable feast during the
calendar so savvy working parents know they
can count on getting a long weekend off. With
the Christmas break, whichever day it falls on,
December 25th feels like a Sunday.
THE SHOPS
In the run-up to Christmas, the shops are open
24-7 and Amazon will deliver parcels overnight if
you have a Prime account, some postcodes even
enjoy a four-hour delivery turnaround. Winning!
On Easter Sunday, the shops are closed! Closed, I
tell you! It’s the end of the world. Buy extra bread
and milk in case you run out during the 24 hours
the supermarkets aren’t trading.
THE TV SPECIALS
Christmas TV is definitely better than Easter TV.
Who doesn’t love the festive films, Doctor Who
special and the CBeebies Pantomime?
Whereas if Channel 4 screens Watership Down
again this year, as it has for the last couple of
years over Easter, there will be yet more parents
complaining that a film about bunnies has left
their children traumatised. Here’s a tip: Don’t let
sensitive youngsters watch it. It doesn’t end well...

THE ACTIVITIES
Is it even Christmas if you haven’t done at least
three or more of the following with your family?
Ridden on the ‘Polar Express’; visited Santa in his
grotto; watched a pantomime; made Christmas
cards as a ‘craft activity’; frozen to death in town
for the ‘lights switching on ceremony’; watched
Elf the movie. The list is endless.
It’s exhausting.
Easter is not without its own traditions but most
are decidedly more low-key than the Christmas
offerings. The popularity of Easter Egg hunts
has grown over the last few years. These days
you can buy baskets and Easter Egg hunt kits
or follow an Easter trail at various places around
the county from Belton House near Grantham to
Boultham Park in Lincoln, to name a few.
WHAT TO WEAR
Christmas: It’s all about the jumpers. I buy a new
one every year. You can never own enough in my
opinion. My youngest child (he’s four) will happily
wear anything with a reindeer or catchy festive
slogan on it, whereas I have to shop smarter for
my daughter who is 12. She will wear festive
leggings but scoffs at anything else. She scoffs
at me too, when I wear my ‘Prosecco-ho-ho-ho’
jumper. I can’t think why.
Easter: While the Easter jumper
is yet to catch on, you can
find plenty of themed clothing
items featuring bunnies or
chicks in the shops. Your
child may also be tasked with
making an Easter bonnet for a
school parade. I try not to get
too competitive about such
things. I remember spending
hours making a bonnet for my
daughter which featured a nest crafted out of real
moss with three chicks inside. It was a work of
art. The winning bonnet consisted of a straw hat
with an animatronic bird that cheeped attached to
it. No moss, no nest, nothing... but I’m not bitter.
THE MASCOTS
Christmas has reindeers.
Easter has not one but three cute fluffy creatures
to choose from: Chicks – they cheep, they’re
fluffy and fit in the palm of your hand; bunnies
– fluffy, cuddly, fit in two hands; lambs – (gah,
probably because a traditional roast dinner on
Easter Sunday is lamb, so let’s not dwell on that
too much). But still, lambs – fluffy, cuddly – fit on
your lap and you can bottle feed them at Rand
Farm Park, near Lincoln.
Easter wins.
THE GIFTS
Now, this rather depends on your perspective
about spending money on gifts. I struggle with
the consumerism. Getting the balance right of
having happy children who have received their
dream toy and happy children who have been
spoiled to death is a fine line. I try and aim for
the former.
At Easter, there is much less pressure about
gifting. Firstly, children’s expectations
are lower. However, they may expect a
certain kind of chocolate. My children
have become accustomed to receiving a
golden Lindt bunny. And they won’t be
fobbed off by the Aldi version.
THE ICONS
Santa: Everyone loves Father Christmas.
He symbolises hope, love, magic and
kindness.
The Easter Bunny: I’m sorry Hoppy – you’ve got
some serious ground to cover before you’ll reach
the mass
appeal of Santa. Although, I personally find a
giant bunny delivering chocolate more appealing
than an old, overweight, bearded guy sneaking
into my house while I sleep. Even if he does leave
me a bottle of Chanel perfume.
So, Easter versus Christmas. Which is best?
Was it a tie? I’ve lost count.
EDUCATION
Kingsdown Nursery
30 fr hours available at
kingsdown nursery school...
30 Funded Hours for eligible 3 and 4 year olds.
15 Funded Hours for eligible 2 year old and
all 3 and 4 year old. Sessions are available to
buy, morning, afternoons or full days for nonfunded
2 year olds or as a top up to the 15
hours funded for 3 and 4 year olds.
Do you have a 2, 3 or 4 year old? If so, do you know
that the Government is providing funding for some 2
year olds, and all 3 and 4 year olds to attend Kingsdown
Nursery for 15 hours or 30 hours a week? Young
children can have great fun playing with or alongside
other children, exploring paint, water, clay and playing
outside in a safe, well-equipped play area. As well as
the benefits for the children, having a nursery place at
Kingsdown, can give parents and carers a welcome
break from the demands of a busy toddler or young
child. It can give you extra time to go shopping, do
some housework, look after the baby, take a college
course, do extra hours at work or just have a cup of
coffee in peace and quiet, and drink it while it’s still hot!
Most children attend Kingsdown for 5 mornings or 5
afternoons. We also offer full days from 8.45 – 3.25
p.m. There is a breakfast and after school club if you
need a longer day. Coming regularly helps children
develop friendships and positive relationships with staff
and other children. Families who are not eligible for
the Government 2 year funding often buy one or two
sessions a week to help their child develop their social
skills ready for starting in our 3-4 year old nursery class.
At Kingsdown we offer a wonderful engaging
environment, both indoors and outdoors. Children
have access to top quality resources and fully
qualified staff, both teachers and Early Years
Practitioners. We teach children to share, take turns,
learn about letters and numbers, paint, write and
draw, ride, climb, explore and investigate.
Throughout the year, Kingsdown provides
many opportunities for children to experience
nature in all its forms. Each spring, we
have a bird’s nesting box with a camera in
and children eagerly watch the laptop to
see if eggs have hatched yet. Kingsdown
is fortunate to be near Birchwood Nature Park and
we regularly take groups of children for walks there,
to look for mini-beasts and to study the changing
seasons.
All children have weekly music lessons with Pete the
Music Man. Pete brings his Double Bass and Guitar
and enough musical instruments for all children to
have a go! We also have Stuart from Meet the Beasts
in with his exotic pets, snakes, lizards, spiders,
insects and snails.
Children can wear their own clothes but many wear
our uniform of red, blue or purple polo shirt and
sweatshirt. Children invariably join in with messy
activities at nursery and if they have their Kingsdown
uniform on, they are hard wearing and will stand up to
the demands of a busy day at nursery!
EDUCATION
Newton Academy
newton academy – the science club for girls
A new academy aimed at encouraging young girls
to pursue careers in science and technology
has been launched in Lincoln.
The Newton Academy – the
Science Club for girls – was
set up by the University of
Lincoln in 2014 to take girls
on a 3-year scientific voyage
of discovery. Since then over
eighty Year 6 girls from across
Lincolnshire have enrolled and
have attended our Saturday
Club events.
The Saturday Club is a series of
Saturday morning science and
technology-themed workshops
consisting of hands-on
activities and projects,
designed to work alongside the
National Curriculum, that will
inspire and enthuse the next
generation of female scientists
and engineers. The Programme
has included the Robotics
Big Launch; Spud Science;
The Chemistry Christmas
Cracker; The Engineering
EGGstravaganza!; Pharmacy
Phacts; and a visit to the
Big Bang Fair at the NEC,
Birmingham.
The Academy has been created
as part of the University of
Lincoln’s Athena SWAN
project, acknowledging the
Institution’s commitment to
improving the representation of
women in science, engineering,
technology and mathematics
(STEM).
To improve the representation
of female academics in some
STEM areas (particularly
in physics, mathematics,
engineering and computer
science) we have to attract
more girls to these subjects
at School level (e.g. currently
only 20% of Physics A-level
students are female). We believe
that early engagement is the
key to increasing the popularity
of STEM subjects among our
girls. The Academy, therefore,
aims to inspire 10–14 year olds
in STEM subjects – subjects that
research shows they are less likely
to pursue – opening their eyes
to the possibilities of what they
can achieve, and encouraging
them to consider post-16 study in
STEM subjects... and ultimately,
of course, to pursue science and
technology careers. But most of
all, the Newton Academy is all
about showing young girls that
science can be fun! There are
currently 120 girls taking part.
Girls enrol in the Academy at the
end of Year 6 and stay until the
end of Year 9. During their three
years, ‘Newton Girls’ will take
part in projects that develop their
confidence, their enthusiasm for
STEM, and essential problemsolving
and critical thinking
skills. They will develop leadership
skills and the confidence to
challenge any preconceptions
that may prevent them from
pursuing and being successful in
any STEM field.
up for future years please go to www.newton.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk
striving for success...
Lincoln Minster Preparatory School has
been listed in the Sunday Times Parent
Power Top 100 Preparatory Schools
for the second year running, soaring up
the league table to 44th place.
Schools are ranked by aggregated average scaled
scores achieved by children in reading, spelling,
grammar and maths in their SATs tests taken at
the end of the primary phase in Year 6.
In 2016 the school, which is not academically
selective, ranked in the Top 100 for the first time
in 90th position. Just one year later it has soared
to 44th position as a result of pupils’ attainment in
the summer term.
This comes just weeks after a highly successful
ISI inspection which graded the school as
‘Excellent’ for pupils’ personal development
and ‘Good’ (with Excellent features) for pupils’
achievements.
Head of the Preparatory School, Fiona Thomas,
who has led the Prep School since 2012 said:
“Being listed in the Top 50 Independent Prep
Schools is a wonderful achievement for Lincoln
EDUCATION
Lincoln Minster School
Minster School and comes at the same time
as a more demanding curriculum and more
rigorous SATs tests. The percentage of high
scores achieved by our pupils is particularly
impressive. At Lincoln Minster Preparatory
School we have successfully managed to raise
attainment, but have not compromised on our
extensive enrichment offer, leading to a true
education for life for every child.”
charity clothing range
supporting leukaemia fight...
A local business owner is helping to raise
necessary funds for a young boy who has been
tragically diagnosed with leukaemia - just one
day after being sent home from school with
what appeared to be a sore throat.
Louth based Emma Jacklin - owner
of ‘Oh Arthur’ clothing brand - saw
a post on social media made by
Josie Barron, owner of the popular
‘Mummy Social’ website, who
recently announced in a heartbreaking
Facebook post that her
son Dexter (4) had been diagnosed
with the blood cancer in January.
Emma is a keen follower of Mummy Social and was
moved by the tragic news, and decided to take
action to help. Recruiting her friend
television presenter Helen Skelton,
and best selling author Sarah Turner
(‘The Unmumsy Mum’) - who are
both involved with Mummy Social - to
launch a clothing range. Dexter was
asked to draw his own design for the
range, which features him and his little
sister Annabelle together underneath
a rainbow. Dexter also chose his
favourite charity - CLIC Sargent, the
children’s cancer charity - which will
benefit from the profits raised.
Emma said: “What started with a sore throat -
24 hours later a diagnosis of cancer is a parent’s
absolute worst nightmare. As a parent it completely
broke my heart. What if that was my little boy?
Easter 2018

there’s never too much of a good thing...
At a time many parents think there’s too much chocolate around,
mum-of-four Caroline Thain reckons there’s not nearly enough…
What the actual heck has happened to
chocolate? There’s a chocolate crisis. We are
right in the middle of a sugar obsession, as
prices rise but products shrink. And like many
catastrophes, they’re blaming Brexit.
Whenever I confess to random strangers in
the village Co-op that I’m addicted to sugar,
instead of thinking I’m odd, they engage in
lengthy open discussion about how they are
too and we talk of future diabetes fears, tooth
loss and how it’s harder to give up than heroin
- according to no scientist anywhere.
But Cadbury keeps making changes. First they
made my Dairy Milk different, then they shrunk
my Creme Egg (I blame Br-eggs-it) and now
they do weirdly small versions of Wispa, Flake
and Twirl in packs of four.
“Better for your
pancreas perhaps
but pants for
your purse.”
Do they even do normal
size any more? And as
much as I don’t do normal
- and normal, as one of my
quirkier friends told me, is
just a setting on a washing
machine - everyone knows
if your Mars used to be big and now it’s small
then that’s a rubbish deal. A Wilko four-pack
Double Decker is more like a dinky decker, an
Aldi-bought Mars bar is almost microscopic
and don’t get me started on the multipack
vanishing Flake. Is nothing sacred?
It turns out ‘shrinkflation’ is a thing. Where
ingredient costs rise for chocolate companies,
instead of passing the price increase to the
customer, they charge the same price for a
smaller product. They don’t announce this
though the weight is on the packaging. But
who knows how much a Mars bar weighs? You
just chuck it in the basket and go. You don’t
realise it looks tiny compared to Mars bars in
your memory. Until you get home and exclaim
“Where’s the rest of it?”
It’s not life threatening, a salacious scandal or
connected to saving the planet so it doesn’t
make big news. But it sucks.
Us mums, we work hard
for our chocolate thrills
and when we stick that
four-pack in the trolley
HEALTH & SPORT
Caroline Thain
and part with our pound, we are implicitly
saying we support these sneaky practices.
It’s about so much more than chocolate. It’s
politics.
They don’t put on the wrapper “Now LESS
Mars for your money” or “Check out this
disappearing Double Decker”. I can’t because
it’s already gone. Vanished. Disappeared.
Gone because I ate it. And to be honest I ate
all four. Because they’re so small and cheap. I
accidentally might have bought two packets.
This Easter, if indulging in more chocolate,
check out the weight of what you’re buying
before you buy. Large boxes and
cheeky packaging can be deceptive and
confectionary manufacturers can have a
field day with Easter eggs.
I know companies legally have to put
weights on packages. But unless you
are very bored, generally shoppers do not
scrutinise these weights and compare them
to the weights on the packaging of previously
purchased products.
If they keep reducing the sizes of chocolate
HEALTH & SPORT
Swimtime East Midlands
putting the fun into
swiing lessons...
Swimming is a life skill that everyone should
possess. We take this seriously at Swimtime East
Midlands, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy
yourself while you learn to swim with us.
Our lessons for children are fun, and we seek to help your
child feel absolutely safe whether it’s their first lesson,
their first venture into deep water, or their first time in a
more challenging class. It’s our aim that your child should
progress through the STA Learn to Swim Programme at
their own pace, but more importantly that they develop a
love for being in the water that lasts a lifetime.
If you are an adult learner, fun may not be the adjective
that springs to mind when recalling your childhood lessons,
but at Swimtime we think
that you should enjoy your
lessons just as much as
our younger pupils. We
want you to look forward
to your time with us, and
feel relaxed as you learn
to swim or improve your
existing swimming strokes.
The Swimbabies and
Swimtots classes that we
offer are specialist classes
for babies, toddlers and
pre-school aged children.
A parent or guardian joins
the child in the water with
a specially qualified teacher
for a relaxed and fun
swimming lesson.
The classes will help
your little one build water
confidence, improve
strength, balance and coordination.
A series of fun
songs, games and tasks
will help your child explore
the water at their own pace
and build the foundation
skills which will eventually
lead to independent
swimming.
therapy for children...
Brickwork have worked with children
for many many years in a variety of
settings including day nurseries,
crèches, families homes, primary
schools and secondary schools.
I am Chelsey Harvey and I have always been
very passionate about the emotional well-being
of children and young people since experiencing
some emotional difficulties at 16 years old
myself. So when I had opportunity to train as a
Counsellor for both adults and children I couldn’t
wait to get qualified.
I spent 3 years juggling being a mummy,
working part-time and studying to make my
dream become a reality. I can proudly say it was
worth it.
Since qualifying several years ago I have worked
with lots of children and adults individually in
therapy.
I have my own private independent counselling
practice based in Lincoln called Brickwork
Therapeutic Counselling. I offer
counselling to children 7 years +
and depending on the individual
offer 45 minute or 1 hour
appointments.
My first appointment with
any new client whether they
are a child or an adult is an
assessment session. It is about
information gathering, agreeing contracts and
terms of therapy and assessing if counselling is
the best service to meet the required need. And
lastly but not by any means least it’s chance for
the client to meet me and see if they feel they can
work with me.
I work in a variety of ways with my clients of all
ages to ensure they get the most out of their
therapy sessions.
When working with children and young people
specifically I often use toys, crafts, conversation
cubes, sand, stories, art and dolls house etc if it’s
appropriate dependant on their age, situation and
development.
There are endless reasons a child or young
person may benefit from counselling. Children
just like adults sometimes experience a mental
health problem or struggle to process and
understand something that has happened or
HEALTH & SPORT
Brickwork Therapeutic Counselling
Some of the items used
in therapy with children
happening. In these circumstances counselling
can be of huge benefit. Examples of things that
children or young people may need support with
are; bereavement, self-esteem, bullying, divorce,
moving house or schools, sexuality,
anger, anxiety, exam stress, confidence
and eating disorders to name a few.
Just like adults counselling gives the child
a confidential space to talk about their
problem without being judged.
If you notice a change in your child’s
behaviour and feel concerned that
something is bothering them and feel counselling
may be of benefit then you can contact me on
enquiries@btcounselling.co.uk to discuss it
further.
Counselling is non- judgemental and entirely
objective. Sometimes just knowing that can
reassure a person to open up about what’s
bothering them.
I am available to
work 7days a week
including weekends.
The pool will be a luxurious 29°C (86°F) and hot
for any chill in the spring weather.
The free childrens’ play area was fully refurbished
last year and is open every day.
Visitors in 2018 will also notice further improvement
in the gardens and car park as well as work on
the ambitious sensory garden project, which
will continue throughout the year. Thanks to the
generosity of supporters, much of the necessary
funding is in place and more fund raising this season
will enable the project to be completed. It will include
a water feature, planting to appeal to all the senses
and specially designed disabled access.
The park has its own café and the many independent
shops, and restaurants in Woodhall Spa are just a
short stroll away past the famous woods, managed
by the Woodland Trust for everyone to enjoy.
The whole 2018 events list for the Park is
now finalised, with the elves and fairies day
for small children making a return after a
successful debut in 2017, as is the fun dog
show with a new extra doggy sports day at the
end of April. There are more open air viewings
of iconic films and the summer 10k and
triathlon which have become regular sporting
fixtures are also scheduled.
Further details and a full list of events
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
NK Outreach
activities for the whole counity...
The NK Outreach team are a
community physical activity deliverer,
who operates in the North Kesteven
district of Lincolnshire, as well as
surrounding areas upon request. The
team and their equipment are based at
the One NK centre in North Hykeham.
All of our mobile activities come as all inclusive packages
which can be hired, but we also deliver site based
activities for all ages. We have a dedicated team of NK
Outreach workers, drivers and volunteers who are trained
in each activity. Our ethos as a team is to be inclusive
and deliver fun, enjoyable activities for all ages. We
deliver activities all year round, and we can deliver village
events, school activity days, as well as help out at local
fundraisers and corporate events, but we can also deliver
personal parties too, as long as you have the room for us!
The team’s mobile activities include our very exciting
mobile climbing wall which has 4 auto belay units for
you to enjoy several routes and challenges. Our climbers
must be aged 4 years plus to enjoy, but we can offer
bouldering around the bottom of the wall for ages 3 or
under upon request. Our climbing wall comes included
with full body harnesses, waist harnesses, as well as
chest harnesses if needed, and of course helmets! Our
skating packages include our mobile skate park, which
includes several ramps, boxes and rails! This is a great
introduction to skate boarding as is recommended for
ages 4 plus. For those who want an extra challenge
we also have our mobile mini half pipe which is
recommended for 8 years plus. This can be placed on
any hard flat surface which can include grass. For all of
our skate packages we also bring skate boards, scooters,
and all safety pads and helmets. Lastly for the very
energetic who need to burn off some energy, we have our
mobile free bound obstacle course. This includes large
foam blocks, vaulting horses, steps, different size hurdles
and lots and lots of safety mats. We can deliver this
activity either indoors or out and can be made into one
large course or two smaller ones for fun competitions.
42
Easter 2018

For a more all rounded experience the team can
also deliver some general play and craft activity, of
which is equipment we still have access to from our
POD play bus project. The team also have access to
sumo suits which can be hired for a small additional
activity which will work well at any event, big or
small!
We hire our equipment out to schools but operate
the climbing wall at 16 climbers per hour, so that the
pupils get the maximum benefit out of the climbing
experience. The Skate Park also operates at 16 per
hour but the free bound can cater for larger numbers
as more of a mass participation activity.
We have updated our hire prices for 2018 and made
them more affordable for smaller groups, so please
get in contact if you would like more information, as
we would love to deliver our great activities for you.
As well as our great outreach equipment, we also
run activities at our contract sites, which include
the One NK centre in North Hykeham and the 1
Life at Sleaford site. The team launched walking
football last year and it has proven to be extremely
successful, so much so that we now have two
established teams who are known as the Hykeham
Hedgehogs and Sleaford Snails. We have two
weekly sessions in Sleaford and one weekly session
in North Hykeham. All sessions are for the over 50’s
(mixed) and each session costs £2 to take part.
The sessions are:
Every Wednesday 10.30am-11.30am
Life at Sleaford outdoor pitch
Every Thursday 11.15am-12.15pm
One NK Centre outdoor pitch
Every Saturday 9.30am-10.30am
1 Life at Sleaford outdoor pitch
The team also launched Walking Netball back in
November 2017 and we have now have a core
group of ladies who attend weekly sessions at
the One NK centre on Wednesday evenings from
7pm-8pm. Our session is fun and friendly, and
it is great for all abilities, it costs £3.50 each,
which includes a cuppa afterwards. Again these
sessions are mixed and open to all adults, please
come down and give it a go!
The team also deliver come and climb sessions
on selected dates at the One NK centre on a
Sunday morning from 10am-1pm. Please see our
Facebook page for further information!
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
Nature Detectives
nature detectives are springing into action!
Families are escaping months of winter hibernation and
running straight into woods all over the country! But this
raises one question- what exactly can you do once you and
your family have galloped into the great outdoors? Look no
further, the Woodland Trust says they have you covered!
The Woodland Trust’s Nature Detectives scheme is showing
families how exciting woodlands are when they’ve gone
through their spring revival. Bright colours return to the trees
and flowers, and wildlife is making a comeback. There is no
better time to observe the transformation of nature than now!
The Trust’s Nature Detectives website hosts a range of
free activities to download It’s paid family memberships
are oozing with exclusive crafts, stickers, activity sheets
and fun wildlife fact, in a fresh, newly-designed pack. The 3
membership choices are age group specific: 0-2, 3-5 and 6+.
There’s a wide range of activities currently available. Some
of the most popular ones include how to spot the first signs
of spring, hunting for mini beasts and how to make treemendous
twig towers. There are even some amazing wildlife
masks to help your little ones feel right at home in the woods!
So if you are interested in getting the absolute most out of
your woodland adventures, be sure to find your local wood
and visit the Nature Detectives website.
Pipe Hall Farm, Lichfield
A brief but wonderful
introduction to
Lincolnshire’s best woods
Lincolnshire boasts some
incredible woodland for families
to visit, each one different and
special in its own way. So why
not use this quick guide to get
your family wood journey started.
PIPE HALL FARM,
LICHFIELD
Pipe Hall Farm boasts some
gorgeous natural scenery.
Broadleaf species including
ash, oak and blackthorn – all
of which provide shelter to
blue tits and robins as they
flit around the 48 hectare
woodland. Families can probe
into history as they explore the
woods famous springs, which
were vital to the growth of the
nearby city Lichfield. Can your
children imagine how the wood
would have looked hundreds
of years ago – who might have
lived there?
Easter 2018

LONDONTHORPE WOOD, GRANTHAM
Your kids will be in awe at Londonthorpe’s carpets
of colourful wildflowers as poppies, cornflowers
and bluebells bring life to the wood in the spring
season. Try exploring a range of habitats including
mature woodland, a huge pond and brilliant high
forest. There’s a big hill that you’ll find during the
circular route round the wood; are your kids brave
enough to roll down it?
Let’s make
Woodland Wind Chimes!
You’ll need:
• Sticks
• Bright coloured paint
• Thread or string
Let’s go!
OWLET WOOD, BLYTON
A stone path flows through the woods and
is surrounded by some of the UK’s most
magnificent trees and, in spring, Owlet is a
butterfly paradise. So let the kids run wild and
explore the diverse trees and species of wildlife at
Owlet. This historic landscape offers a moment
of peace for busy Lincolnshire families. Your
little Nature Detectives can use spotter sheets to
discover more about the wildlife and trees they
find at this wonderful Grantham woodland.
Find even more woods by visiting the
Woodland Trsut website – just pop in your
nearest town or village!
www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods
Visit your local woods and collect
around 7 loose sticks of different sizes
Get funky and paint your most amazing
designs on your collection
Use thread to tie the top of each stick
to the thickest stick around couple of
centimetres apart
Hang it up and listen to it chime away!
If you’ve got smaller children trying to
join in, they may struggle with fiddly
knots and string. Why not print off an
owl colouring page from the Nature
Detectives website and allow their
imagination to take flight!
