Pioneered by Steve Thomas, a purveyor of
mid-century modern décor, Soho Retro is
a colorful shopping destination along 18th
Street South in Homewood. Thomas makes
sure to keep the store stocked with one-ofa-kind
pieces that are equal parts functional
and beautiful. While big-box stores churn
out mid-century furniture in mass quantity,
Thomas is mindful to keep his store stocked
with only the most unique retro items.
While there, make sure to browse the vibrant
artwork that lines the walls. Most are by local
artists, who are known to hang out in the
store and explain their medium and process.

Necklaces hanging on the wall also serve
as decór and are a throw to Hellmers'
background in jewelry. Selecting necklaces in
similar colors to the decór help them blend
seamlessly into the home's aesthetic.
FEATHER YOUR NEST
The paintings, furnishings, and decorative
accents throughout Hellmers’ home come
from flea markets, antiques stores, and
galleries across the nation and around the
world. “ From a pair of 1920 vintage peacock
lamps to an assortment of insects, there’s
visual interest at every angle.
An Eclectic
Collection

Long Island native Chatham Hellmers honed
her skills in visual art and merchandising at the
Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. A
buying trip brought her to Birmingham, and the
allure of the Magic City persuaded her to stay.
Her signature style shows up in her work with
jewelry and accessories, as well as in her chic
and unique downtown loft pictured here.
UNDER COVER
The simple addition of a glass cloche atop a
favorite find turns the decorative tree of birds
into a tiny treasure. Hellmers also relied on
metal shelves to elevate the look in both
height and aesthetic in this vignette.
ON A ROLL
Tables and cabinets that already
have casters give the ability to
easily move things around when
inspiration strikes. This means the
home's look is continually evolving
and constantly rotating. This piece in
particular is an old hospital gurney.
