‘ThoughbasedintheDerbyshireDales,ImakefrequentvisitstoCornwalandtakeinspirationfrom<br />
itsuplandmoors,ruggedcoastlinesandbusyharbours.InmyworkItrytocaptureanesenceofa<br />
placeorsituationaswelastryingtosimplifythe<br />
formsandcoloursofwhatIsee:oldmineworkings<br />
slowlybeingreclaimedbythelandscape;ancient<br />
fieldsystems;thechangingweather,andlight.<br />
’Iwiloftenuseaboattoviewthelandscapefrom<br />
thesea.Thisofersaverydiferentviewpointwhen<br />
lookingbacktotheland,wherethegeometryof<br />
fieldpaterns,theshapeofthecoastanditshidden<br />
formsarerevealedalongwiththemotionofthe<br />
sea.Mypaintingsarecompositesofmanyofthese<br />
elements.<br />
‘Iam interestedintherelationshipsofcolourand<br />
contrast,aswelastheinterplayofformsandgesturalmark-making.<br />
‘Iworkintuitivelyandusualywithminimalsketchingorplanning.WhenIdosketchitisrarelyasa<br />
meansofreferenceforapainting–asIpreferthe<br />
worktakeonalifeofitsownfrom memory,ordevelopedinstinctively.Elementswithinapainting<br />
arebasedonfleetingimages,imaginationandexperiences,whichperhapsaren'tvisualyrepresent<br />
tive,ifcomparedtoasnapshot,butforme,encapsulateaparticularsliceoftime.<br />

andscrapedbacktorevealremnantsoftheearlier<br />
