New Trier holds off Loyola in double OT<br />

It took two overtimes to<br />

do it, but New Trier girls<br />

hockey advanced to the<br />

state championship with a<br />

4-3 win over Loyola in the<br />

state semifinals on Monday,<br />

March 5, in Bensenville.<br />

The Trevians will<br />

face Glenbrook on March<br />

24 at the United Center in<br />

the state championship.<br />

“They deserve to go<br />

there,” New Trier coach<br />

William Brush said. “(The<br />

United Center) has clean<br />

pucks, nice locker rooms<br />

and the Blackhawks will<br />

drop by and show their<br />

rings. They did a great job<br />

and the Blackhawks do a<br />

great job on it.”<br />

The Trevians and Ramblers<br />

were tied 3-3 at the<br />

end of regulation. Following<br />

a scoreless first sudden-death<br />

overtime, New<br />

Trier sophomore forward<br />

Kate McLaughlin scored<br />

off an assist from freshman<br />

forward Sabrina Shvartsman<br />

with 3:18 left in the<br />

second overtime to propel<br />

the Trevians into the state<br />

championship game.<br />

“Sabrina Shvartsman<br />

passed to me and we were<br />

on a penalty kill and the<br />

defender was in front of me<br />

and I took it away from her<br />

and scored on the goalie on<br />

the ground,” McLaughlin<br />

said. “It was great. I was<br />

scared because I didn’t<br />

want to mess it up because<br />

it was a long five periods,<br />

but in the end it was great<br />

and it felt really awesome.”<br />

McLaughlin also scored<br />

an unassisted goal earlier<br />

in the game with 7:41 left<br />

in the third period to put<br />

the Trevians ahead 3-1.<br />

“She’s a beast,” Brush<br />

said. “She’s one of the best<br />

forecheckers and has one<br />

of the hardest shots in the<br />

league.”<br />

But the Ramblers battled<br />

back to force overtime.<br />

Jones to cut New Trier’s<br />

lead to 3-2 with 4:37 left<br />

in the third period. Loyola<br />

sophomore forward Jayna<br />

Park then scored with 41<br />

seconds left in regulation<br />

to tie the score at 3-3 and<br />

force overtime.<br />

“When Jayna Park is out<br />

there, she’s always going<br />

to be dangerous,” Brush<br />

said. “She’s amazing.<br />

That’s a girl who literally<br />

was on the ice almost every<br />

day since she was like<br />

7 years old. She’s just a<br />

tremendous goal scorer.”<br />

Dynek was proud of the<br />

way his team battled back<br />

from a 3-1 deficit midway<br />

through the third period to<br />

tie it at the end of regulation.<br />

“We’ve got girls that<br />

just don’t give up,” he<br />

said. “The comeback was<br />

good. I thought we were<br />

going to win it.”<br />

New Trier got off to a<br />

strong start in the game.<br />

1-0 lead with 11:45 left in<br />

the first period. The Trevians<br />

struck again when<br />

McNerney to extend<br />

New Trier’s lead to 2-0<br />

with 6:04 left in the first<br />

period. Loyola got on the<br />

board when freshman forward<br />

Emma Piatigorsky<br />

scored off an assist from<br />

sophomore defender Soleil<br />

Giesen to cut New Trier’s<br />

lead to 2-1 with 5:32 left in<br />

the second period.<br />

Loyola graduates only<br />

two seniors (forward Cathleen<br />

Cusick and defender<br />

Kaela Finegan), so the<br />

Ramblers will return most<br />

of their team next year.<br />

“We’re young,” Dynek<br />

said. “We only had two seniors<br />

who did an unbelievable<br />

job. We’re looking<br />

forward to next year.“<br />

Ben Thomas picked<br />

a fine night to have the best<br />

game of his high school<br />

hockey career.<br />

Thomas had three<br />

goals and three assists in<br />

a shocking 8-3 win over<br />

New Trier that ended the<br />

season for the two-time<br />

defending state champion<br />

Trevians.<br />

But after a career-best<br />

performance in a state<br />

quarterfinal game of this<br />

year’s Amateur Hockey<br />

Association of Illinois<br />

state championship tournament,<br />

Thomas quickly<br />

deflected praise.<br />

“I couldn’t have done<br />

that without my line mates<br />

and everybody on this<br />

team,” Thomas said. “We<br />

all came ready to play..”<br />

The game, played on<br />

March 6 at the Edge Ice<br />

Arena in Bensenville,<br />

turned on a five-goal outburst<br />

from GBS in the<br />

second period. The Titans<br />

led 6-2 and Thomas had a<br />

hand in every goal.<br />

“Ben’s been great all<br />

year and he stayed out of<br />

the box,” Titans coach Jim<br />

Philbin said.<br />

Even with a four-goal<br />

lead, Glenbrook South<br />

steered clear of complacency<br />

against the preeminent<br />

state power in high<br />

school hockey; in the last<br />

25 years, New Trier has<br />

won 13 state titles, including<br />

four of the last five and<br />

six of the last 10.<br />

Four of the Titans’ five<br />

second-period goals came<br />

on the power play.<br />

“The penalties didn’t<br />

help us but we just didn’t<br />

play a very good game,”<br />

New Trier coach Bob<br />

Melton said. “It’s really<br />

unexplainable. Give Glenbrook<br />

South credit, they<br />

played really well, but<br />

we haven’t given up eight<br />

goals in years. I wish I had<br />

an answer but it just wasn’t<br />

our night.”<br />

GBS went up 1-0 less<br />

than a minute into the<br />

game on a Nicolas Botvinnik<br />

goal. NT answered less<br />

than a minute later with<br />

a Jakob Travis goal off a<br />

Henry Freedman assist and<br />

the first period ended in a<br />

1-1 tie.<br />

Each team was assessed<br />

10 penalties. NT goals<br />

from Freedman and Peter<br />

Lifvendahl came on the<br />

power play on assists from<br />

Robert Soudan and Mason<br />

Smith.<br />

Melton said that NT had<br />

not lost a state quarterfinal<br />

game in more than two decades.<br />

Melton will bid farewell<br />

to 13 seniors.<br />

“It’s a good group of<br />

seniors, they played hard,<br />

and we went on a good run<br />

from the middle of December<br />

to the end of January,”<br />

Melton said. “I just did not<br />

see this coming tonight.”
