Girls hockey
New Trier holds off Loyola in double OT
Todd Marver
Freelance Reporter
It took two overtimes to
do it, but New Trier girls
hockey advanced to the
state championship with a
4-3 win over Loyola in the
state semifinals on Monday,
March 5, in Bensenville.
The Trevians will
face Glenbrook on March
24 at the United Center in
the state championship.
“They deserve to go
there,” New Trier coach
William Brush said. “(The
United Center) has clean
pucks, nice locker rooms
and the Blackhawks will
drop by and show their
rings. They did a great job
and the Blackhawks do a
great job on it.”
The Trevians and Ramblers
were tied 3-3 at the
end of regulation. Following
a scoreless first sudden-death
overtime, New
Trier sophomore forward
Kate McLaughlin scored
off an assist from freshman
forward Sabrina Shvartsman
with 3:18 left in the
second overtime to propel
the Trevians into the state
championship game.
“Sabrina Shvartsman
passed to me and we were
on a penalty kill and the
defender was in front of me
and I took it away from her
and scored on the goalie on
the ground,” McLaughlin
said. “It was great. I was
scared because I didn’t
want to mess it up because
it was a long five periods,
but in the end it was great
and it felt really awesome.”
McLaughlin also scored
an unassisted goal earlier
in the game with 7:41 left
in the third period to put
the Trevians ahead 3-1.
“She’s a beast,” Brush
said. “She’s one of the best
forecheckers and has one
of the hardest shots in the
league.”
But the Ramblers battled
back to force overtime.
Loyola freshman
forward Stephanie Smith
scored off an assist from
freshman forward Bryn
Jones to cut New Trier’s
lead to 3-2 with 4:37 left
in the third period. Loyola
sophomore forward Jayna
Park then scored with 41
seconds left in regulation
to tie the score at 3-3 and
force overtime.
“When Jayna Park is out
there, she’s always going
to be dangerous,” Brush
said. “She’s amazing.
That’s a girl who literally
was on the ice almost every
day since she was like
7 years old. She’s just a
tremendous goal scorer.”
Loyola coach Ralph
Trier’s Julia Laden (No. 29) hugging teammate Clare
Mulhern after Laden’s first-period goal against Loyola
Monday, March 5, in Bensenville. Gary Larsen/22nd
Century Media
Dynek was proud of the
way his team battled back
from a 3-1 deficit midway
through the third period to
tie it at the end of regulation.
“We’ve got girls that
just don’t give up,” he
said. “The comeback was
good. I thought we were
going to win it.”
New Trier got off to a
strong start in the game.
Trevians freshman forward
Serena Seiple scored
off an assist from Shvartsman
to give New Trier a
1-0 lead with 11:45 left in
the first period. The Trevians
struck again when
sophomore forward Julia
Laden scored off an assist
from senior forward Maureen
McNerney to extend
New Trier’s lead to 2-0
with 6:04 left in the first
period. Loyola got on the
board when freshman forward
Emma Piatigorsky
scored off an assist from
sophomore defender Soleil
Giesen to cut New Trier’s
lead to 2-1 with 5:32 left in
the second period.
Loyola graduates only
two seniors (forward Cathleen
Cusick and defender
Kaela Finegan), so the
Ramblers will return most
of their team next year.
“We’re young,” Dynek
said. “We only had two seniors
who did an unbelievable
job. We’re looking
forward to next year.“
Glenbrook South routs New Trier Green in upset
Gary Larsen
Freelance Reporter
Glenbrook South forward
Ben Thomas picked
a fine night to have the best
game of his high school
hockey career.
Thomas had three
goals and three assists in
a shocking 8-3 win over
New Trier that ended the
season for the two-time
defending state champion
Trevians.
But after a career-best
performance in a state
quarterfinal game of this
year’s Amateur Hockey
Association of Illinois
state championship tournament,
Thomas quickly
deflected praise.
“I couldn’t have done
that without my line mates
and everybody on this
team,” Thomas said. “We
all came ready to play..”
The game, played on
March 6 at the Edge Ice
Arena in Bensenville,
turned on a five-goal outburst
from GBS in the
second period. The Titans
led 6-2 and Thomas had a
hand in every goal.
“Ben’s been great all
year and he stayed out of
the box,” Titans coach Jim
Philbin said.
Even with a four-goal
lead, Glenbrook South
steered clear of complacency
against the preeminent
state power in high
school hockey; in the last
25 years, New Trier has
won 13 state titles, including
four of the last five and
six of the last 10.
Four of the Titans’ five
second-period goals came
on the power play.
“The penalties didn’t
help us but we just didn’t
play a very good game,”
New Trier coach Bob
Melton said. “It’s really
unexplainable. Give Glenbrook
South credit, they
played really well, but
we haven’t given up eight
goals in years. I wish I had
New Trier’s Mark Ashmore (left) and Glenbrook South’s
Max Ibarra fight for position Tuesday, March 6, in
Bensenville. Gary Larsen/22nd Century Media
an answer but it just wasn’t
our night.”
GBS went up 1-0 less
than a minute into the
game on a Nicolas Botvinnik
goal. NT answered less
than a minute later with
a Jakob Travis goal off a
Henry Freedman assist and
the first period ended in a
1-1 tie.
Each team was assessed
10 penalties. NT goals
from Freedman and Peter
Lifvendahl came on the
power play on assists from
Robert Soudan and Mason
Smith.
Melton said that NT had
not lost a state quarterfinal
game in more than two decades.
Melton will bid farewell
to 13 seniors.
“It’s a good group of
seniors, they played hard,
and we went on a good run
from the middle of December
to the end of January,”
Melton said. “I just did not
see this coming tonight.”
