winnetkacurrent.com school the winnetka current | March 15, 2018 | 35 $33K in program grants approved for NT students SUBMITTED BY THE NEW TRIER EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Since 2004, the New Trier Educational Foundation has raised private funds to enhance New Trier students’ learning experiences that are beyond the reach of the District 203 budget. The foundation, led by a volunteer board of alumni, parents and friends, recently approved the additional $33,000, bringing its 2017-2018 total to more than $65,000 in grants that will benefit a large percentage of the entire student population this year. NTEF partners with teachers and staff to identify exceptional educational opportunities that can be brought into the classrooms or take place beyond the school setting. These programs support the arts, music, literature, health and wellness, media and theater, science and engineering, technology, social studies, special education, service learning, student clubs and faculty initiatives. A partial list of programs and initiatives that will receive funding from the foundation this spring include: Metropolitan Community Project: New Trier student volunteers from Social Service Board and the Sociology in Action class are partnering with Kelvyn Park High School, a Chicago Public School, in order to advocate for fair funding of schools in Illinois. Funds from the NTEF will provide transportation, lunches, writing materials and the facilitator fee to continue this initiative. Dance Lab 2 Showcase at Vittum Theatre: This project provides the advanced dance students an opportunity to produce a professional dance concert and perform original choreographed works in an iconic Chicago theater. Funds enable Dance Lab to rent the Vittum Theater, hire a professional lighting designer, buy costumes and create publicity materials such as posters and flyers. Volta Science Olympiad: Now in its seventh year of sponsoring a Science Olympiad team within Chicago Public Schools, New Trier faculty and students team together with Volta Elementary School in the Albany Park neighborhood. New Trier student volunteers assist the Volta students with studying, practice labs and building their engineering products. The Volta teams have finished in the top three in the city for the last three years and have advanced to the state tournament. Funding support provides engineering supplies, competition supplies and other needed services. All-American High School Film Festival: New Trier students in Film Production 2 are submitting film entries in the spring to this national competition. They will travel to New York City in the fall with faculty to participate in the festival. The event provides exposure to the work of other young, talented and hard-working filmmakers from other parts of the world. The festival also includes workshops, panel discussions, technology showcases and networking opportunities. Funding support helps to reduce students’ out-of-pocket expenses. Last year, two New Trier students were accepted into the competition and had their films screened in the AMC Movie Theater in Times Square. Collaboration between New Trier and Perspectives Charter School: In 2016, 45 New Trier students from the Integrated Global Studies School program and 45 students from Perspectives Charter School on Chicago’s South Side met several times to get to know each other, build solidarity and discuss ways they could work together to decrease violence and bring more peace to Chicago. Funds will pay for a facilitator to guide the first of three exchanges between New Trier and Perspectives students, with the goal of making this a transformational experience for all student participants. Lincoln-Douglas Debate Coach Training and Materials: New Trier faculty Ursula Gruber has been invited to participate in two leading summer debate institutes, where she will engage with coaches from across the country to gain valuable insight for New Trier’s Lincoln-Douglas Debate Program. The outcome of this training will help keep an excellent competitive standard for students. The North Shore’s most exciting orchestra!
