to celebrate patron
saint in style
On Sunday 22 April 2018, the town of Whitworth will hold its
annual celebration of England’s patron saint, St George.
As usual, the event has been organised by the Whitworth
Tourism and Leisure Committee, comprising town councillor
and non-councillor volunteers.
The celebrations will be slightly different this year as a
procession is not financially viable due to the cost of the road
closure. The Chairman of the Committee, Councillor David
Chorlton said “It is a real shame that we are not able to have
the procession this year but with a limited budget the
committee felt that we need to make sure there are funds
available to close the road for the Rushcart celebration in
September. By considering different ways to celebrate St
George’s Day we are making sure that the committee can
continue to hold events within our community.”
This year the committee will host a celebration at the
Riverside starting at 2pm featuring Whitworth’s famous
Vale and Healey Brass Band followed by coffee and light
refreshments after the service, with the events expected
to draw to a close around 3pm.
Whitworth primary schools are taking part in a ‘design a
dragon’ competition, the winners of which will be
announced at the service.
