is meant to share Putra Science Park’s (PSP) activities and

achievement for the university.

Our cover shed light on the success achieved by UPM in winning

The Most Entrepreneurial University Award, a competition

organized by the Ministry of Higher Education. The award was

presented in appreciation of the initiatives and efforts carried

out by UPM that resulted in the excellent performances in

education and entrepreneurship development programs.

Besides, UPM also was selected as winner of the National

Intellectual Property Award 2016 under the category (Best

Management of Intellectual Property) for the fourth time since

the introduction of Anugerah Harta Intelek Negara (AHIN) in

2006. In this issue, we had an interview with Dr. Zahira Mohd

Ishan, Deputy Director of Putra IP, the Intellectual Property

management team, who helped UPM in achieving the success.

We have an article on YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Husaini Omar,

our newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and

Innovation). He is the former Managing Director of UPM Holdings

Sdn. Bhd. and has won many awards for his contribution in

Science, particularly in Petroleum Geology and Engineering

Geology.

We also discuss on Putra Dynamic’s activities, a training unit

of PSP. Under this unit, we have provided training programs

to public, especially to universities to create awareness on

innovation and commercialization.

An Innovation Open Day was organized by PSP at the Institute

of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP) to promote

innovations of UPM. This exciting event was attended and

Q : Congratulations on your 2016 win for AHIN! How does it feel?

How important do you feel such recognition to UPM?

I am of course was very pleased and happy. So too the whole team comprising

of YBhg Prof Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila (the then DPVC(R&I)), AP Dr

Samsilah Roslan (the PSP Director) and the PSP task force for the National

Intellectual Property Award (AHIN) 2016 from the Putra IP Division, Promotion

and Marketing Divisions, Tech Transfer Unit of PSP and the Director of PSP

this is the fourth time UPM won the Best IP Management Category. We won

the same category in 2008, 2012 and 2014. The AHIN 2016 was a win for

after AHIN 2016 winning, UPM also being awarded as the Most Innovative

University. This is a double winning for UPM.

Q : Please tell us about UPMIP System and the services offered

by Putra IP unit to the researchers.

Putra IP Division reaches out to UPM researchers via the UPMIP system

platform and its other services. The UPMIP system is a database for the

UPM’s IP information and a platform for the UPM researchers to disclose their

invention or work suitable for the application of IP protection. The UPMIP

system can be reached at www.upmip.upm.edu.my. I am proud to say

that the development of the system from scratch was done in-house by

Putra IP Division and IDEC, as well as being the pioneer among universities

in Malaysia.

For the purpose of disclosure, the UPMIP system aims towards having

paperless application. Registered researchers with the UPMIP system can

variety and copyright-cum-integrated circuit of layout-design after logging

in the UPMIP website. The online forms incorporate the old hardcopy version

of IP forms with minimum amendments for a clearer disclosure.

In terms of Putra IP Division’s services offered to researchers, we can put

it into two big categories, namely the IP disclosure assistance and the IP

awareness program. UPM’s researchers among the staffs and students

Q : What are the trends you have observed in IP registration

since the establishment of UPMIP System?

There is an increase of applications especially for copyright protection in

2016. It is possibly due to PSP’s continuous reaching out efforts on creating

awareness for copyright protection works to the faculties that produces

modules, questionnaires and other works.

Q : How many IP applications do you receive for per year?

How many of them are successfully registered?

In 2016, we received 252 applications, 78 of them were for patent. Only

Innovation comes from saying

will increase this year.

Q : What are the common challenges that you face with

regard to IP management in general?

Common challenge in IP management in general is keeping up to

the expectation as Malaysia’s Best IP Management. Managing IP

underground works including arrangement of IP presentation involving

the IP evaluation panels and presenters; meetings or discussion with

co-owners or prospective co-owners where necessary with the joint

ownership agreement in pursuit; prior art searches; documentations and

communications with IP agents; and IP monitoring among others are

but in concerted manners with other Divisions of PSP as well as assisting

the RMC for the IP part in the negotiation for research collaboration with

interested third parties.

Q : What advice would you give to young researchers of UPM?

My advice is it is prudent for our precious researchers to get their invention

or work protected as an IP before publishing them. Let us help determine

what should be the best form of IP protection in case they are unsure. If the

best form of protection were patent or industrial design, researchers need

researchers are not doing what others have done, apart from adding up

the prior art discovered for academic review. We know that you want to

share your invention, technologies or work with the community, let us do

it the right way so we can reach greater number of communities and in a

better form of delivery as most invention or technology from the university

Putra Science Park, the Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) was

formed to synergize the relationship between universities, industries, government and the public. Inspired by the

Quadaple Helix concept, the center was built to experiment the idea of combining ICC with a Scince Park. It has

more than 1,800 intellectual properties, 112 of which have been successfully licensed.

The center has given birth to new inventions since its inception 15 years ago, earning them the National Intellectual

Property Award from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia in innovation management for the fourth time.

Apart from technology transfer, involving licensing and outright sales, companies are encouraged to engage with

research and development (R&D) divisions in UPM with incentives to allow businesses to utilise technical expertise

demands.

Director of Putra Science Park, Assoc.

Prof. Dr. Samsilah Roslan said the

purpose was not only to commercialise

complete the full cycle of research and

development. The innovative solutions

must go through a long process of trials,

procedures, market evaluations and

collaborations with numerous parties.

As an agricultural university, UPM is

proud to have successfully introduced

and commercialised animal vaccines

used in more than eight countries for

overcoming diseases such as fowlpox in

poultry and pneumonia in goats.

Other inventions include an application

using high resolution H-NMR and FTIR

spectroscopy. The invention which is the

brainchild of Prof. Dr. Amin Ismail is able

to detect porcine DNA in food products.

Another team led by project leader Dr.

Puziah Hashim, came up with another

Islamic product, LS Clay Powder, which

to clean oneself after getting into

contact with dogs or pigs, a cleansing

requirement for Muslims. The process,

known as samak, requires the use of

clay.

In line with UPM’s mission, Putra

Science Park will continue its efforts

to impart knowledge with the wider

community and introduce new

technologies to the market. To further

explore the opportunity for new

and conduct operation by using a tool, named

Self Retaining Anal Speculum (SRAS), an innovative

product developed by researchers from Universiti

Putra Malaysia (UPM).

When this bio-composite tool is inserted from the anal

lining to the rectum of a patient, SRAS will open up

the anus, making it easier for surgeons to carry out

examination or surgery.

SRAS is an anoscope designed as a tool to provide

an opening to the particular human cavity for the

purpose of anorectal surgery.

A novel feature of SRAS is the retractable silicon collar

which retains the product in the position without using

the hands of the surgeons. The lips on the ends of the

wings serve as the locking system for the silicon collar.

This hands-free feature enables surgeons to use both

their hands when conducting an operation.

The clip can be loosened to return the silicon collar

back to its original position, making it easier for SRAS to

be pulled out from the rectum after it is used.

As SRAS can be rotated in the rectum, surgeons will be

able to examine all sections of the anus to decide on

whether a surgery is necessary.
