International Golf Course Architects
The 2015 Review
Mackenzie & Ebert enjoyed an exceptionally busy 2015.
Some highlights include:
Royal Portrush
By the end of the year, construction was well underway on the changes to the Dunluce Course to make
it ready for The Open Championship. In October, the date for the event was announced as 2019.
All of the works to the Valley Course and the Skerries Course have been completed. The new holes on
the Dunluce Course will be ready for play in the early summer of 2017.
Trump Turnberry
Work at Turnberry included the construction of the new Pitch & Putt Course and a new Short Game Area
in the first half of the year. Work on the Ailsa Course started at a furious pace when the course and hotel
closed at the end of September. The target of rebuilding and turfing all 18 greens was achieved by the
end of the year. 2016 will see the completion of the project with the course to open on 1 st June.
2015 Construction
Reconstruction work continued to dominate with projects underway in Canada, England, Finland,
France, Holland, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Spain.
The 2015 Review Mackenzie & Ebert
The Open Venues
As well as the major projects at Royal Portrush and Turnberry, input has also been provided to 5 of the other venues.
Bunkers were added to the 15 th hole at Royal Troon, 39 bunkers were filled and 4 added at Royal Lytham, plans for
reconstructing the 2 iconic bunkers on the 4 th hole were made at Royal St. George’s, Open Practice Ground plans were
drawn up at Carnoustie and a commission to advise at Royal Liverpool has been made at the end of the year.
Mackenzie & Ebert
Vantaa, Helsinki, Finland
Construction started on this new course very close to Helsinki Airport. The course is being built in two phases with the
front nine well underway and the back nine awaiting landfill before the golf construction can commence. It will be the
first course in Finland to offer pay and play golf.
2015 Notable Projects
Sadly every project cannot be mentioned but some other notable projects are:
Angus Glen, Markham, Canada
The renovated South Course hosted the PanAm Games in July. Focus has moved onto the North Course with a bunker
refurbishment project carried out and long term strategic planning.
Mackenzie & Ebert
Club de Golf Terramar, Sitges, Spain
The Club has continued to make good progress with the implementation of a masterplan for its course which has a Tom
Simpson layout at its roots. The beautiful 3 rd green set right beside the ocean opened in the summer.
2015 Notable Projects
Golf Country Club de Cannes Mougins, Côte d’Azur, France
The plan was to execute the first phase of the bunker reconstruction at this former European Tour venue, but the Club
decided that work had gone so well that work continued. All three phases were completed between January and July
and the work included building three new greens and rebuilding every single bunker on the course.
Mackenzie & Ebert
Vierumäki, Finland
This 36 hole complex continued with the reconstruction project for all of the greens on its older Classic Course. Six
greens were rebuilt through the year on this beautiful sand, heather and pine course which is located just over an hour
north of Helsinki. The project will continue in 2016 with 7 greens left to rebuild.
2015 Notable Projects
Exeter Golf & Country Club, Devon , England
A major re-routing of the course was undertaken to reduce the impact of new housing alongside various holes.
This work involved 4 new greens and 5 sets of tees.
Mackenzie & Ebert
Golf Club Scotland, Slovakia
September saw the opening of the 9 hole course at Golf Club Scotland to go with their driving range, 6 hole par 3
course and 80m long putting green. It is a superb facility for people to start to play the game in this emerging market.
This is a dream come true for the founders of the Club who made a pledge that they would build a course in Slovakia
that embodies all that is great about Scottish golf.
2015 Notable Projects
Kedleston Park Golf Club, Derbyshire, England
The final phase of rebuilding all of the bunkers on the course took place this autumn. Over the past two years since the
work started, the Club has filled its membership list, re-opened its waiting list and is charging an entry fee in an area
where most clubs are struggling. It shows that investing in the course is worthwhile.
Mackenzie & Ebert
Oakmere Park Golf Club, Nottinghamshire, England
Having produced a course design audit in 2014, the first phase of work started in 2015. Bunkers were rebuilt on the
Admiral’s Course and two new greens on the Commander’s Course to create room to add a par three nine hole course.
A rough edged bunker style has been adopted on this sand based course.
2015 Notable Projects
Trevose Golf and Country Club, Cornwall, England
In October, we were appointed to produce a masterplan for Trevose, a lovely Harry Colt layout on the North Cornwall
coast. So enthusiastic were the Club’s owners that work started on the 13 th green and 2 nd hole in early December.
The aim is to use the best features of the course as the inspiration for strengthening the whole course
over the coming years.
Mackenzie & Ebert
2015 Notable Projects
Royal County Down, Newcastle, Northern Ireland
The Annesley Links, which weaves its way through the No.1 Course, now has three completely new holes taking the
layout as close to the sea as any of the 36 holes. The views from all three holes are stunning. They are routed around a
huge sand hill which forms such a significant landmark behind the 3 rd green on the No.1 Course. At the end of the year,
the planning moved onto the new practice ground that the creation of the new holes allows space for.
Mackenzie & Ebert
2015 Notable Projects
Once again this year, we have been entrusted to work on many of the great courses across the British Isles,
Europe and also in Canada. Working sensitively on courses where the great old architects have worked is part
of what we have always done in our careers.
