Our Story

In January 2000 after spending many years as a management consultant/head-hunter in the

FMCG and pharmaceutical sectors, I decided to realise my passion for designing and a love of timber.

My carpentry skills and design work had already been put to good use during my competitive

sailing years, but now was the time to step it up a gear and start a timber business utilising

these skills.

After much research and converting a boat trailer into a box trailer to keep tools inside and transport

timber on the top, the journey started. At that time grooved softwood decking was all the rage

and was unfortunately driven on by uneducated marketing tactics. This was something I did not

agree with and was therefore probably the first to start building decks using smooth profile boards,

which I had specially machined by a local sawmill.

The creation and development of Quality Timber Decking allowed us to design and construct

bespoke elevated timber decks and structures including buildings using the highest quality

and most stable timbers available.

By 2007 we were increasingly being asked by commercial clients if we could also supply the materials

we were sourcing and Quality Timber Supplies was formed. Since then we have steadily grown and

diversified the business known today as QTD.

Our workshop facilities allow us to design and produce different products fulfilling our customers

wishes for something bespoke. We have nurtured this passion to become leaders in our field and

through our green credentials we are one of the only companies in this market to be able to

provide an FSC and PEFC full chain of custody certification from the harvesting of the timber

through to project completion.

Supplying and building with specialist hardwoods and thermowoods on external projects puts

us in the unique position of understanding what does and doesn't work in the UK climate.

We can therefore pass on our expertise and guidance in helping you to make the right choice

of material for timber construction projects, whether you are Architects / Specifiers, trade or

domestic customers

QTD have achieved many firsts in this market and will continue to innovate and push the

boundaries using the latest technology.

The Woods Journey To Perfection

ThermoWood is a thermal modification procedure that preserves wood in its most natural and

flawless state for a life-long journey. The “ThermoWood method” involves a carefully computer controlled

heat and steam process up to 210 degrees C.

Besides the preservation, the ThermoWood process also causes certain chemical changes in wood.

Not only does the colour darken but the stability, decay resistance and insulation properties are largely

increased after the process is complete.

The ThermoWood method, brand and logo can only by the used by members of the International

ThermoWood Association.

Environmental Awareness

QTD set out with the purpose of weaving the texture of the “tree” into the fabric of “life”. Our aim was to

convert this most beautiful gift of nature into breathing, living spaces. Today, with each new design, we

feel that we are bringing nature one step closer to human beings.

While trying to preserve the rich forests of our world through sustainable solutions, we embrace the quality

of “longevity” as the most significant brand value of our products. Inspired by the harmony and aesthetics

of nature itself. QTD is one of the only companies in the market who can provide FSC and PEFC full chain of

custody certification.

What is FSC?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and this system allows consumers to identify, purchase and use

timber and forest products produced from well-managed forests.

FSC certified forests are managed with consideration for people, wildlife and the environment.

What is PEFC?

PEFC is the world’s leading forest certification system and an internationally recognised brand

devoted to ensuring that forests are managed according to environmental, social and economic criteria.

Our Environmental Policy

‘QTD Ltd recognises that it has an impact on the environment and is committed to minimising this impact

when delivering its services. It also encourages its customers and suppliers to reduce their impact on the

environment’

Why Choose ‘Thermally Modified’ Timber

For The UK Climate?

Stability Durability Sustainability High Quality 100% Natural Low Maintenance

How old is the ThermoWood technology?

Actually, heat treatment is a method used since the Vikings. First heat treatment studies were made by German

scientists in 1930’s and ThermoWood technology was introduced in the 90’s. Then heavily used and further

perfected by the Scandinavians. Nowadays leading European companies like Novawood apply this technology

to non tropical Hardwoods to allow specific timber species to be used externally as well as internally.

What types of timber can be thermally treated?

In principle Thermal modification process can be performed to each type of wood. Some of them are ''Pine,

Spruce, Ash, Oak, Beech and Iroko''. However, best efficiency may not be obtained from each tree.

Considering best colour, texture, price and customer appreciation we perform the ThermoWood process to

most suitable materials. 95% of our production constitutes of ThermoWood Pine, ThermoWood Ash and

ThermoWood Iroko.

Do I need to maintain ThermoWood?

Any products used in External space are in need of care and maintenance. Maintenance period for the

ThermoWood treated materials are much longer than the regular wood. Regular untreated wood will face

problems such as rotting, fungal growth, insect holes, bending, etc. and therefore will require more frequent

maintenance. ThermoWood products will not face the same problems above and therefore the maintenance

period is much longer.

Why use a thermally treated board?

We would recommend using a thermally treated deckboard or cladding board due to its behaviour. Twisting,

bending and warping has been minimalised in the process. Decay and infestation has been prevented. The

board now has long lasting durability as well as protection against weather conditions. Other reasons may

be that the timber is 100% natural, sourced from sustainable forests and preserved without any chemicals.

ThermoWood Ash Decking

A Unique Harmony of Natural Colours,

Quality and Elegance

Choose the most appropriate ThermoWood decking that suits the characterists of your living space and

lifestyle. The environmental features of the field that will apply, the frequency of the use and the

colour adaptation will have an effect on your preference. The quality standard of ThermoWood decking

will meet all your expectations. While the aesthetic grain structure of Ash reveals the character, elegancy

in Iroko and the knots in the Pine will reflect the tradition.

How do I maintain my decking area?

All timber decking areas will benefit from regular brushing with a stiff broom throughout the year however we

recommend that every 6 months to a year you give the area a more thorough clean using a pressure sprayer

and a purpose made product like Prepdeck Cleaner. This product is formulated to remove layers of build up

and discolouration, restoring the look of the timber. It also reduces the conditions that’s cause any surface to

be slippery when wet. Unless you use pigmented/natural UV plus oil, the timber will gradually fade to grey. If

this is not your desired look then we recommend oiling the area after you have let the area dry after cleaning

to maintain the colour. Beware of using paints and stains because these will chip and flake off giving you even

more maintenance and the deck will look a mess if the surface you are applying it to is not properly prepared.

Custom Solutions, Quality is Detail

ThermoWood edging is available as a standard size of 21 x 43mm and the profile avalible is square edge.

The edging boards are a perfect way to finish off the perimeter of the decking area and hide the construction

framework. To go with the edging we also offer fascia in a standard sizes of 21 x 150mm The fascia is a

perfect finish to any visible sides of your decking area. Fascia can also be used to finish off steps and any

rasied areas of the deck that may have the underneath exposed.

Finishing Methods

End Grain Sealer:

When the timber starts to dry out it loses the moisture quicker through the ends of the timber hence the

characteristics of grain checking and opening up. Clear wax sealer seals the timber ends and slows down

the moisture loss to a more controlled process, thus preventing this cracking. This is especially useful

because cutting off the damaged ends not only becomes an expensive waste of timber, but may mean

the difference between having the right length of timber for your project or it being several centimetres

too short.

We recommend using our Messmers End Grain Wax Sealer to prevent the boards from grain checking.

Oil Finish:

Oiling the boards will help you to retain the dark rich colours within the boards. This product contains

UV filters to delay the silvering process that strong sunlight causes in all timbers. We can now provide

you with two options when it comes to oiling your boards, you can purchase our Messmers UV Plus Oil

or you can order your boards pre-oiled saving you the initial labour cost of applying it yourself. If after

a year you wish to maintain your investment we can supply the Clean & Oil starter Pack for you to use

when convenient.

Fixing Methods

where a hidden fastening installation is preferred. Hidden out of sight and enabling easy installation, QTD

Clips are highly resistant to all heavy weather conditions making them the UK’s top choice for hidden

clips. The benefit of the hidden clips system is that it eliminates pre-drilling of screw holes into hardwoods

and the spacing of the deckboards are automatically pre-set.

Fascia & Edging

Custom Solutions, Quality is Detail

Millboards edging is available as a standard rigid board or you can buy their flexible board which allows you to

create curved edges. The boards also come in the full colour range to match the deckboards and fascia

boards. The edging boards are a perfect way to finish off the perimeter of the decking area and hide the

construction framework. The Bullnose edge is also an alternative for the edges of your decking, saving you

from having to use the matching touch up paint.

Millboards Fascia boards come in a variety of colours that match every colour of Millboard deckboards so that

your outdoor space flows as one and every inch has the distinctive Millboard look and feel. The fascia is a

perfect finish to any visible sides of your decking area. Millboards Fascia can also be used to create simple

cladding.

Finishes & Fixings

Hidden Fixings:

Millboard uses their small headed stainless screws called Durafix. There’s no pre-drilling or countersinking

needed. You can simply screw through the surface of the board and thanks to the flexible Lastane® surface the

screw disappears below the surface leaving virtually no mark and creating a really clean finish.

To be used for Deckboards 4.5 x 60mm Durafix Stainless Steel Screws

Approx number of screws required is 22 per board

Touch Up Coating:

This is a coating that can be used to blend in any cut ends. There are seven different colours that will match

with your deckboards. We would advise to finish off your decking area with Millboards matching Fascia &

Edging however depending on your project you can use this coating on any exposed ends. Please note any ends

will turn yellow when exposed to UV light/Sunlight so we would advise coating all exposed ends.

Cutting:

The boards can be cut with standard saw blades, although Millboard recommend a carbon-tipped,

multi-purposed chop saw. As the formed end of the moulded board should be squared up and trimmed off this

can either be placed in a less visible area or touched up with the matching paint. Using the matching fascia and

edging boards will add a more professional finish. Please note Millboard offcuts cannot be burnt and have to

be sent to landfill sites.

Finishes and Fixings

Custom Solutions, Quality is Detail

Hidden Fixings:

This is only available with the Zeta Clip cladding profile. The hidden clip system allows you to display your

cladding boards with no visual sight of screws in the boards.

Face Fixings:

Simply screw through the face of the board into the sub-frame, you can then purchase plug caps to go over

each hole to create a perfect finish.

Board Spacing:

This will be created with which ever profile you choose to go with.

Joist Spacing:

We recommend 400mm centre to centre joist spacing for a standard area, projects may vary.

End Grain Sealer:

When the timber starts to dry out it loses the moisture quicker through the ends of the timber hence the

characteristics of grain checking and opening up. Clear wax sealer seals the timber ends and slows down the

moisture loss to a more controlled process, thus preventing this cracking. This is especially useful because

cutting off the damaged ends not only becomes an expensive waste of timber, but may mean the difference

between having the right length of timber for your project or it being several centimetres too short.

We recommend using our Messmers End Grain Wax Sealer to prevent the boards from grain checking.

Oil Finish:

Oiling the boards will help you to retain the dark rich colours within the boards. This product contains UV

filters to delay the silvering process that strong sunlight causes in all timbers. We can now provide you with

two options when it comes to oiling your boards, you can purchase our Messmers UV Plus Oil or you can order

your boards pre-oiled saving you the initial labour cost of applying it yourself. If after a year you wish to

maintain your investment we can supply the Clean & Oil starter Pack for you to use when convenient.

ThermoWood Ash Charred Cladding - Medium

ThermoWood Charred Cladding Collection

(Shou Sugi Ban)

Designed and created by QTD using specialist techniques to recreate the ancient art

of Japanese Shou Sugi Ban. We use ThermoWood which is the most stable, durable,

chemically free and environmentally certified material available. We offer 5 different

levels of charring to provide different finishes to suit your project requirements.

52

Custom Made In The UK

For centuries the Japanese perfected the art of charring/burning wood (known as Shou-Sugi-Ban) in order

to make the wood resistant to fire, rot, insects and the UV effects from the sun. The process of

charring/burning the outer surface brings out the richness of the different wood species grain structure.

Also varying the intensity of the burning process produces different finishes.

After almost 2 years of experimenting and testing this process, QTD have taken this labour intensive

process a step further by introducing the ThermoWood Charred Cladding Collection which takes

previously Thermo-heat modified hardwood and softwood and then burning and charring the outer

surface in a variety of ways. This process makes the boards far more fire resistant than standard

charred/burnt timbers such as larch and cedar etc.

“ As an architect I deal with a lot of companies, a lot of products

and a lot of different locations. At first I was unsure about Charred

cladding because I wasn’t sure how it would keep in the rain and

damp environment. After carrying out a couple of experiments with

QTD who kindly provided me with large samples and a lot of advice

I was very pleased wth the result. My client was convinced this is

the product he’d like to use and I was more than happy to go ahead.

The project had an outstanding finish and the charred cladding

looked smart to say the least. I will continue to recomend Charred to

all future clients and I was extremly pleased with all the help and

advice provided by the QTD Staff.”

Why choose ‘Thermally Modified

Timber’ for Charred Cladding?

25Yrs + Durability1 00% Natural High Stability Highly Fire Resistant

Why is this beneficial for the charring/burning

process?

The Timber is already highly resistant to decay so Charring / Burning the surface not only provides and

aditional layer of improved performance such as:

- UV Resistance to fading

- Minimal Timber Expansion & Contraction

- Unique Surface Finishes

- Little to no ongoing maintenance

The benefit of thermowood is that all the resins and tannin’s present in timber have been removed so

by the additional process of charring/burning the surface, produces a much improved charred surface

eliminating the risks of the timber igniting when exposed to sparks or flames. These days the primary

use is for aesthetics and improved performance in exterior applications.

With natural timbers such as Larch or Cedar they still retain their resins, tannis and sugars. Charring /

Burning the surface adds a degree of protection however should this surface become chipped or

damaged then the natural timber beneath becomes exposed to the elements and potential breakdown

and decay may occur over time.

Questions and Answers

What’s the difference between Hardwood & Softwood?

Hardwood and softwood are broad biological terms used to describe species of wood. The

terms have nothing to do with the physical hardness. Hardwoods come from broadleaved trees

and softwood species from coniferous, evergreen trees. There is a wide range of species of

wood within each category that are highly suitable for decking. The important factors for wood

used outdoors is that it is durable and stable enough to resist fungal decay and not twist and

warp. This means using a hardwood classified as naturally durable (some are not) or a

softwood given extended durability through treatment.

How to avoid slipping when the boards are wet?

For many years grooved boards have been sold as a prevention to slippery surfaces. However

this is not the case as layers of dirt build up in the grooves which then trap the water which then

deteriorates the board and creating a slippery surface. As you can imagine this is difficult to

clean out of the grooves so the problem is never solved. Timber is a natural product and will

never come with a natural anti slip guarantee. We would recommend choosing a smooth surface

profile as this will not be difficult to clean and will stay cleaner for longer. Yes there will still be a

build up over time but this can be cleaned right off the surface and you won’t have the issue of

trying to get into nooks and cranny’s of the board. If you desire the appearance of a grooved

board, choose a shallow V groove profile.

85

How long will a timber deck last?

A timber deck should give you many years of pleasure providing that you have chosen a naturally

durable timber species or a treated wood and taken the correct caring procedures. Structures

cannot be installed and then ignored for years, you need to make sure you maintain it correctly if

you want it to last. (Just as you would service and clean your car). We would recommend you c

lean the area every 6 months to a year depending on the surrounding areas (Moss, leaves, pets

etc.) Also make sure to check the structure, especially if its elevated for signs of anything loose

or general wear and tear. Don’t wait until something breaks or worse it collapses.

What is ThermoWood?

ThermoWood is the thermal modification of timber with pressure, high heat treatment and

steam. During the process, controlled heat in the ThermoWood chambers goes up to 320°C

while controlled internal heat of the timber reaches between 180°-220°C depending on

variables of the species. Negative characteristics of the wood in external use such as

rotting, fungal growth, insect formation, swelling and bending is minimized and abolished.

Why use a thermally treated board?

We would recommend using a thermally treated deckboard or cladding board due to its

behaviour. Twisting, bending and warping has been minimalised in the process. Decay and

infestation has been prevented. The board now has long lasting durability as well as

protection against weather conditions. Other reasons may be that the timber is 100%

natural, sourced from sustainable forests and preserved without any chemicals.

Do I need to maintain ThermoWood?

Any products used in External space are in need of care and maintenance. Maintenance

period for the ThermoWood treated materials are much longer than the regular wood. Regular

untreated wood will face problems such as rotting, fungal growth, insect holes, bending, etc.

and therefore will require more frequent maintenance. ThermoWood products will not face

the same problems above and therefore the maintenance period is much longer.
