OUTSTANDING

CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON

IS AN OUTSTANDING

ECONOMY, WITH OUTSTANDING

OPPORTUNITIES...

Home to one of the strongest and fastest growing

economies in the country, we are one of the best

place to invest in the UK.

Our economy is going from strength to strength.

We have the second highest GVA per head in

England, delivering 20% more output per person

than the UK average, and produce 25% of the

North West’s manufacturing output.

At our current rate of growth, we are set to

overtake Liverpool and Lancashire to become the

second biggest economy in the North West, and

the third biggest sub-regional economy in the

North.

We have a wealth of exciting investment

opportunities including the Cheshire Science

Corridor, HS2, Warrington New City and the

Mersey Dee Economic Alliance. The Cheshire

Science Corridor is home to nationally significant

assets including a European centre for nuclear

engineering consultancies, Jodrell Bank, home to

the world’s biggest science experiment, and the

UK’s largest chemical engineering cluster.

The arrival of HS2 in Crewe brings with it huge

opportunities for investors, in what will be

the best connected place in the UK when the

Crewe Hub is complete. This is a game changing

investment that will make Crewe the only place

in the country that will be less than 30 minutes

away by train from Manchester, Liverpool and

Birmingham, and less than an hour away from

London.

It brings with it an unbeatable growth opportunity

for investors across the Constellation Partnership

area of South Cheshire, Stoke-on-Trent and North

Staffordshire.

The planned Northern Powerhouse Rail will

reinforce Warrington as one of the best connected

economies in the UK. The Warrington New City

Programme will see the delivery of major new

development areas and investment opportunities,

building upon Warrington’s track record as one of

the UK’s most successful places.

The Mersey Dee area, at a pivotal location linking

the Northern Powerhouse and North Wales,

already generates £22 billion in economic output

per year and has exciting plans for growth.

Forty per cent of the area’s working age

population is qualified to degree level or above,

with 15 universities within a 30 mile radius and

200,000 students. These high level skills are

reflected in the region’s employment rate, which is

almost 4% higher than the UK average.

Together with excellent housing, schools, leisure

facilities and culture, Cheshire and Warrington is

one of the most desirable areas in the country to

live, work and invest.

From Chester’s history, architecture and unique

culture, to our vibrant and thriving towns close to

our main centres such as Macclesfield, Northwich

and Crewe, there has never been a better time to

invest in our outstanding region.

Cheshire and Warrington is one of the strongest and

fastest growing economies in the UK.

AN OUTSTANDING PLACE

TO INVEST...

The North’s economic powerhouse, Cheshire

and Warrington produces 20% more output per

person than the UK average.

Latest figures show that the area’s economy

grew by 6% in the last 12 months for which we

have data, to just under £30 billion per annum,

with plans well underway to achieve a £50 billion

economy by 2040, supported by 120,000 new jobs

and 127,000 new homes.

The area also produces 25% of the North West’s

manufacturing output, worth £6.5 billion a year.

The region's economy is already built on strong

foundations. Some of the world's biggest

companies have already recognised Cheshire

and Warrington's strengths with Bentley Motors,

AstraZeneca, Tata, Essar Oil and Barclays among

the blue chip names with a base in the region.

The region excels in high growth sectors including

advanced manufacturing, which is growing at

three times the national average, life sciences,

finance and business services, energy and

chemicals.

The Cheshire Science Corridor is home to some

of the most significant science assets in the UK,

with strengths in advanced scientific analysis

and research, pharmaceuticals, research and

development and manufacturing, chemical

engineering, energy and nuclear engineering,

radio-astrophysics and astronomy.

The area’s success is supported by its excellent

national and international transport connections.

The M6 and M56 motorways provide a quick,

convenient link to the rest of the UK, while the

region’s two airports, Manchester and Liverpool

John Lennon, together handle over 30 million

passengers each a year.

Its already strong rail connectivity is also set to

be further transformed by the arrival of High

Speed 2 (HS2), with a major investment from the

UK Government in a HS2 hub at Crewe set to

significantly boost the area’s investment potential.

When the Crewe Hub is complete, it will be the

best connected place in the UK, less than 30

minutes away by rail from Manchester, Liverpool

and Birmingham, and less than an hour from

London.

The project is the country’s largest infrastructure

development and gives businesses across

Cheshire and Warrington further opportunities to

develop and grow.

Cheshire and Warrington businesses are served

by a deep pool of talent, with one of the largest

concentrations of highly skills workers in Europe.

This includes the Universities of Manchester,

Liverpool, Keele and Chester, which between

them are home to over 50 Centres of Excellence.

Together with an outstanding quality of life,

Cheshire and Warrington really is the best place

to develop and grow successful businesses. From

market towns and village communities close to

the major centres of Manchester and Liverpool

and an unrivalled leisure, retail and cultural offer,

to beautiful countryside and quality housing and

schools, there has never been a better time to

invest in this thriving region.

THE CONSTELLATION PARTNERSHIP

A CONSTELLATION OF CONNECTED PLACES

HS2 is fast becoming a reality. The first phase

to Birmingham was recently given Royal Assent

and the Bill for Phase 2, which will bring HS2

from Birmingham to Crewe, is now in Parliament.

By 2027, Crewe will have a state of the art new

station, and by 2033, when the HS2 Hub is

complete, the town will be 55 minutes by rail

from London and 20 minutes from Birmingham

and Manchester.

This will transform rail connectivity not just into

Crewe but for to the areas around it.

This gives Cheshire, Stoke-on-Trent and North

Staffordshire unrivalled growth potential.

The local authorities and two Local Enterprise

Partnerships across this area have developed

the ground-breaking Constellation Partnership to

capture this opportunity.

Backed by the Government, the Constellation

Partnership aims to deliver more than 100,000

new homes and 120,000 jobs by 2040 and is set

to drive huge opportunities for those looking to

invest in the UK. The area is particularly attractive,

providing significant rental and capital growth

potential through a combination of greenfield

developments, urban and city centre schemes.

The area is already a vibrant investment

opportunity on the route for much of the

country’s existing north-south road and rail

systems. Investors can also take advantage

of Constellation’s east-west connectivity, via

Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe, as well as global

connections through major international airports

in Manchester and Birmingham.

10

871candwep.co.uk

Outstanding investment opportunities

When HS2 arrives, investment in Constellation is

likely to surge.

The region is served by leading universities,

benefits from a highly-skilled population, a diverse

manufacturing supply chain, substantial land

availability, and excellent natural environments.

Building on the unrivalled connectivity of HS2,

the Constellation Partnership aims to create a

distinctive network of connected and successful

places through:

A world class rail hub at Crewe

As Constellation’s primary transport hub,

new development will be driven from the

Constellation’s urban heart.

A transformed urban centre for Stoke-on-Trent

As the capital of Constellation, the city’s

impressive transformation as the commercial

retail, and leisure heart of the area will be

accelerated by regular HS2 services.

A Constellation of thriving and

distinctive towns

Our main urban areas will be supported by a

constellation of distinctive and successful market

towns, with continued investment in town centres.

There has never been a better time to invest in a

region set for a golden future.

largest Pharmaceutical Technology and Development

(PTD) team – it is these people who help transform

new discoveries made at our research facilities into

medicines that can be manufactured and given to

patients. Without Pharmaceutical Development,

there’d be new molecules, but no new medicines.

These development scientists work closely alongside

colleagues who are exceptionally experienced in

manufacturing complex medicines. Having these

teams working closely together allows AstraZeneca to

develop new medicines safely and quickly, ensuring

patients can receive innovative new treatments in the

fastest time possible.

Macclesfield is also home to our second largest IT hub,

providing critical systems that support delivery of our

life-changing medicines.

Alderley Park

Seven miles away at Alderley Park, is the site where

the first approvals were granted for over 30 medicines

discovered in the North West. This site, now owned by

Manchester Science Partnerships, sees a fast-growing

community of scientific start-up businesses utilising

the state of the art laboratory facilities. Many of these

exciting new ventures will no doubt spearhead the

future of medicines and new scientific discovery.

Liverpool

In Liverpool we develop and produce flu vaccinations

for the UK’s child vaccination programme. The 300

plus team is constantly seeking to improve our ability

to beat new strains and mutations to help minimise

the impact of the seasonal flu virus.

Investing in the future

Developing and manufacturing medicines means

investing in new plants, equipment and people. At

Macclesfield we recently invested £120m into the

production of one key anti-cancer drug alone. We are

also investing £60m into our state of the art packing

and warehouse facility.

For AstraZeneca the North West is a vibrant life

science cluster, a strong talent pool and a great place

to do business.
