Hills & Hawkesbury
In March 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip set
off to find more suitable land for agriculture
and travelled up the Hawkesbury River as
far as Dangar Island.
He returned the following year and
navigated the river to a point upstream
of Windsor. Governor Phillip and his party
reached this area by boat on 6th July 1789
and named it Green Hills. He was impressed
with its farming potential and quickly
arranged for food production to begin
in order to relieve the shortages in Port
Jackson.
Governor Macquarie named the settlement
Windsor in 1810. This was the start of
the Hawkesbury Hills District, still a rich
production area for food and a wonderful
playground. Visit the Information Centres
Clay Intersections: exhibition celebrates contemporary ceramics
An exhibition on show till 8 April 2018
at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in
Windsor highlights the work of eight
ceramic artists selected for their diverse
approaches to working with clay.
Says Gallery Director, Kath von Witt,
‘these artists from around the world are
part of a new generation discovering the
versatility of clay. Some are setting new
trends and engaging new audiences,
while others have set out to the learn
age‐old practices of wheel forming,
casting and hand building, spending
countless hours developing techniques
and mastering skills’.
Kenji Uranishi is a Japanese-born,
Australian-based artist whose work
draws upon the longstanding traditions
of ceramics in Japanese art and
culture. Since moving to Australia in
2004, Kenji’s interest in tradition has
increasingly worked in dialogue with the
contemporary. The move also signalled
a critical shift in his practice as he began
working predominantly with porcelain,
hand building translucent white, often
architecturally inspired objects.
‘In some ways, moving to Australia
represented a fresh phase in my life
that provided me with the energy to
explore new materials, without cultural
expectations,’ he says.
Ulrica Trulsson made her way from
Sweden to Adelaide via Scotland and
Melbourne, with her various homes
being reflected in the style of her work.
Her ceramics use a number of different
clays to create organic speckling and
patterning, which is developed further
in the firing process. Her functional
vessels are always designed with smooth,
ergonomic lines that make them a
pleasure to hold.
Parramatta - Penrith
Parramatta was founded in 1788 by
Governor Arthur Phillip as a western
outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially
it was called Rose Hill and was renamed
Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning
“head of waters,” or “the place where eels
lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed
a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a
municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938
and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972
by the inclusion of surrounding centres.
Now Parramatta is a city within Sydney’s
metropolitan area. It lies along the 15-mile
or 24-km Parramatta River, which enters
Port Jackson harbour. The Parramatta River
Cat ferry takes passengers from Parramatta
to Sydney along the River. The River Cat is
a scenic and relaxing way to explore the
waterways . Ferries are cheap and certainly
a fast and pleasant way to travel all over
Sydney. There are many pleasant places to
eat, shop and even go to the theatre along
the Parramatta River, not to mention stroll,
fish or simply relax. Parramatta is famous for
a wide variety of retail and dining options!
Parramatta has many historic buildings,
including Elizabeth Farm (Built in 1793, it
is the nation’s oldest surviving European
HIGH SOCIETY WEDDING
A family affair with simmering tensions
Parramatta was excited at the news – Emmeline
Macarthur was getting married. Little did they know of
Mrs Elizabeth Macarthur’s strong objections to Henry
Watson Parker being the groom. Henry was the private
secretary to Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South
Wales, and seemed a very suitable choice. The streets of
Parramatta were lined with well-wishers as the wedding
coach proceeded to St John’s Church on Tuesday
November 21, 1843. Reverend Robert Forrest, family
friend of Macarthurs and Rector of Camden, performed Wedding Coach
the marriage ceremony while dignitaries representing newly elected NSW Legislative
Council, Parramatta and Camden communities and their wives were in the congregation.
Sir George and Lady Elizabeth Gipps signed the marriage certificate along with Anna
Josepha King (widow of Philip Gidley King, 3rd Governor of NSW) and James Macarthur
(Emmeline’s brother).
The marriage proved successful. Five years later, the couple purchased ‘Clovelly House’ at
Watsons Bay and looked after Elizabeth Macarthur for the rest of her life.
In 1856, Henry Watson Parker became the Premier of New South Wales and two years on
was knighted for his service to Australia.
You can see and hear more about Emmeline Macarthur during the fascinating guided tours
available at Hambledon Cottage, Parramatta’s cultural heart.
and book yourself a place early.
John is an energetic outdoor painter
who works almost exclusively in oils
and is stimulated by the strong light
of the Australian landscape. He is
particularly enthusiastic about the
districts from the Blue Mountains to
Mudgee in the Central West. He enjoys
painting the landscape from life, “en
plein air”, and engages in regular
painting trips to country locations.
John lives in the village of Mulgoa on
the western fringes of Sydney.
The Community Art Centre has grown
yearly since starting up in 1969 in
response to destructive bushfires.
Many homes, churches and businesses
had been lost in the Lower Mountains
and local artists sought a way to help
the community recover from the
trauma. The council generously made
available the building on the corner
of the Great Western Highway and
Ferguson Road and the Springwood
Community Art Centre opened with a
splash. New members join each term
with the total currently approaching
250 members.
Classes offered by the SCAC include
watercolour, pastels, oils, acrylics,
embroidery, patchwork, sketch club,
‘ The Three Artists”
An Exhibition at Everglades Gardens
Gallery, Leura
8th April – 29th April (Wed-Sun). Official
Opening 1:30pm Sat. 7th April
Sue Gasser, Megan Campbell-Jubb and
Christine Hyde are Blue Mountains Artists
who are each very actively involved in
and met each other through the local arts
community. Sue and Megan are primarily
pastelists and Christine works across
watercolours and acrylics. While their art
styles are very individual, their art journeys
have an underpinning similarity. Their
artworks can be found in private collections
in Australia and worldwide.
Megan Campbell-Jubb
It’s only in the last 10 years while juggling
work and family Megan has dedicated time
to her lifelong love of art, when she moved
to the Blue Mountains and discovered
the Springwood Community Arts Centre.
The winning of her first art award was the
turning point in her artistic career. Megan
has worked across all mediums but in more
recent times she has embaced Pastels for
their malleability, texture, intensitiy of colour
and her ability to be very “hands-on”. Her
works reference her love of Australian nature
which also extends to wildlife she fell in love
with while living in Canada. Megan says she
loves to watch the way colour and tone will
bring a painting to life and looks forward to
sharing her paintings with you.
Sue Gasser
It was from a young age that Sue’s artistic
ability was acknowledged by her school
teacher which has remained strong in her
memory.
In pursuing a career not in art, painting and
drawing were always a hobby.
While living in Europe, which is an artists
playground, Sue realised her passion for
art remained strong within the Australian
themes of wildlife and animals, particularly
farm dogs and the country way of life which
resonnates throughout her art. Visitors to
the exhibition will delight in her detail to fur
and feathers which draws the viewer closer
to see that it is in fact a painting and not a
photo. On returning to Australia Sue’s first
entry into an art show saw her first sale and
winning 'Viewers Choice ' award. Sue then
Christine Hyde
Painting, drawing, sketching have been
integral to Christine’s inner peace since
childhood. She made a concious decision
to leave the city for a “tree change”and find
the space to pursue her art career and in
2001 moved to the Blue Mountains where
she built a bush studio, found a vibrant art
community, and embraced her inner-artist
wholeheartedly. She now paints prolifically
and has since received art awards. Christine’s
contemporary art is inspired by her
Australian bush locale and her frequent visits
to France. To view Christine’s art gallery is to
see her journey through oils, watercolours
and acrylics. Her watercolour and oil
paintings of the landscape and nature are
atmospheric, her contemporary acryic and
ink compositions on cradled timber and
Yupo are bold and sing with colour.
Leura House was built 1880 on the
businesses, we now have a newly evolving
centre, drawing locals and visitors into a
thriving new cosmopolitan area to spend
time; to return to, seeking new experiences.
Blackheath
Blackheath at 1065m abve sea level is 114
atmosphere. Blackheath is filled with natural
beauty and there are many breathtaking
Blackheath is full of colonial history. The
first building in Blackheath was "The Scotch
"The Scotch Thistle Inn" was located slightly
south of the present Gardners Inn Hotel.
On the outside of the famous Victory
Theatre antique centre is one of the
town’s proudest displays, a colourful mural
designed by local artist Jenny Kee and
painted in 1985 by members of the local
community on behalf of the Blackheath
Area Neighbourhood Centre. It has
been recently refurbished by this proud
community.
In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that
Wallerawang was first surveyed 1823. In
1824 James Walker was granted a large
tract of land that was called "Wallerowang"
by the local aboriginal people.
Charles Darwin stayed at "Wallerowang
House" (later to become Barton Park) in
1836, and in the book "Voyage of the
Beagle" he describes the area at the
time and the wildlife that included a
number of platypus. There was a huge
increase in population in 1851 after gold
was discovered in the area. The National
School opened 1860. Shale oil mining
began in 1867 and the railway arrived in
1870 with coal hot on its heels in 1873.
onsite. They use the herbs, spices and
produce grown in their permaculture
