What is the first hat you made?
It was a black velvet turban I made on a
short Theatrical Millinery course at
Morley College with Jane Smith. It has
since been in various magic shows.
What is your favourite hat to make?
I love making crazy eccentric hats for
shows where you can explore different
materials and techniques.
What is your favourite hat from film?
It's got to be Carmen Miranda's Tutti-
Fruitti hat in The Gang's All Here, who
doesn't love a turban with fruit all
over it! (pictured above)
If you could travel through time to any
era famous for hats, when would it be?
1940's: military style, with the wartime
restrictions in fabrics people had to be
inventive; larger hat styles, hair
snoods, flat boaters, berets, turbans.
Hats were seen as morale boosters in a
difficult time.
Your top tip for wearing a hat?
Choose something you feel confident in,
a lot of people are scared of wearing
hats or think they don't suit them but
there's always a style that will work
for people. Make sure it is comfortable,
you don't want it slipping or digging
in.
For whom would you most like to make a
hat?
Katy Perry, she's not afraid to wear
something out of the ordinary and have
dancers in outrageous outfits!
Finish this sentence “The joy of a hat
is….”
Feeling spectacular!
Jennifer co-produced the show "The
Magician's Hat which runs as part of the
#LHW18 schedule. It is an interactive
exhibition of themed hats, art and
performance magic using hats inspired by
magicians through time.
